The Federal Road Safety Corps, Katsina Sector Command, has confirmed that eight travellers have died in a fatal road accident, while 17 others sustained various degrees of injuries along the Funtua-Katsina Highway in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

It said the accident occurred at about 1:32 pm on Sunday at Layin Kukah along the Funtua–Katsina Road, involving a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number 14B 92 TR and an unregistered Bajaj tricycle.

According to a First Information Report issued by the command’s Public Education Officer, DRC Shamsudeen Babajo, “The crash involved a total of 25 persons. Seventeen sustained varying degrees of injuries, while eight persons lost their lives.”

According to the statement, the accident was caused by wrong overtaking. It added that information about the crash was received at about 1:34 pm, while the rescue team arrived at the scene at approximately 2:04 pm, recording a response time of 30 minutes.

“The rescue team conducted the rescue operation in collaboration with the Community Watch Corps (C-Watch). The victims and the corpses were taken to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for medical attention and further check-up, while the corpses were subsequently transferred to General Hospital, Funtua,” Babajo said.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended security agencies for the ongoing crackdown on criminal elements following the success of Operation Kosaye, which has led to the arrest of 88 suspects, the rescue of five kidnapped victims and the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition across Lagos and Ogun states.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the coordinated operation also recorded the death of four suspected criminals during a gun duel with security operatives.

Gov. Sanwo-Olu praised the police and other security agencies for their efforts, assuring residents that the state government would continue to support initiatives aimed at keeping Lagos safe.

“We will continue to work with the police and other security agencies to ensure that our state is safe and secure for residents and visitors,” the governor said.

He also lauded the police leadership and the collaboration between Lagos and Ogun states.

“We appreciate the huge efforts of the police as directed by Inspector-General Tunji Disu, in arresting the suspects and the co-operation of our neighbors, Ogun State. This is the way it should be,” he added.

According to the statement, the heightened police presence across both states has seen security operatives parade suspects and display recovered weapons, sending a clear warning that criminals have no hiding place in Lagos and Ogun.

The government said Operation Kosaye, meaning “no space for criminals,” is a coordinated offensive targeting kidnapping syndicates, armed robbery gangs and other violent criminal networks operating in the South-West.

It added that operatives are combing the forest boundary between Lagos and Ogun states, particularly along the J3/J4 axis of Ogbere in Ogun State, as part of ongoing efforts to flush out criminal elements.

The police, according to the statement, remain committed to ensuring there is no safe haven for criminals, especially kidnappers, through intelligence-led operations and sustained security efforts.

Gov. Sanwo-Olu also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing useful information on the activities and hideouts of criminals.

“We will do our best to ensure that our law enforcement agencies are well motivated through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF),” he said.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Edo State Command, has said that, following intelligence information, its personnel arrested a scrap dealer and recovered school property in Benin.

In a statement on Sunday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Ogbebor Efosa, said the combined team, made up of the Edo State Scrap Monitoring Team, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and personnel of the NSCDC Safe Schools initiative, on June 25, 2026, at about 10 am embarked on a routine school monitoring exercise within Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The team visited Oriohhene Primary School, Bolehole, where extensive vandalism was discovered.

“Preliminary assessment revealed that classroom chairs, air-conditioning units, and roofing sheets had been stolen, while parts of the school’s red roof had been vandalized by suspected criminal elements,” the statement said.

Following this, the monitoring team stormed a scrap dump site located at No. 40 Evbienwen Street, Iyaro, Benin City, and recovered vandalised roofing sheets and other items reasonably suspected to have been stolen from public schools.

According to the statement, a suspect, Mr Aniemeka Hilary, 61, a native of Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State and owner of the dump site, was arrested in connection with the recovered items.

It said the suspect, who reportedly regretted his actions, confessed to purchasing vandalised items from unidentified individuals.

It added that the NSCDC State Commandant, Akintayo Saidi Ayinla, condemned the activities of vandals and warned scrap dealers across the state to desist from patronising and encouraging criminal elements through the purchase of suspected stolen items, adding that, “Any individual found aiding, abetting, or benefiting from the destruction of government property will face the full wrath of the law.”
