Aston Villa Rival European Giants for Rare Joao Palhinha on Bargain Deal

Published

Aston Villa are now said to be eyeing a proven Premier League commodity as they contemplate further improving their midfield. Unai Emery was dealt a big blow ahead of the new season by Manchester United, who snapped up Youri Tielemans after paying his £36million release clause.

The Belgian midfielder was crucial to Villa’s success, but they must continue on, and it looks like Johan Manzambi will be recruited to plug the midfield gap. But there could yet be more to come in the midfield, with Emery well aware of the serious depth he needs ahead of a Champions League campaign.

Villa are now being linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha, who is up for sale this summer. Palhinha enjoyed a superb spell at Fulham to earn a £50million move to Bayern, but things did not work out in Germany. A loan spell with Tottenham followed last term, and while Spurs had a disastrous campaign, Palhinha was one of the most reliable players.

Despite that, Tottenham did not take up their £26million or so option to buy due to spending big money on Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, meaning Palhinha remains available and very much up for sale.

According to Record, Benfica are targeting the Portuguese midfielder as they look to kick-start life post José Mourinho, but Villa are named as the Lisbon side’s main competitors, especially after Tielemans’ departure.

It’s claimed Bayern will sell for £21.2million this summer, and Benfica are willing to pay, but they would prefer a loan deal with the obligation to buy, which could open the door for Villa, who could comfortably pay upfront.

Palhinha has been a steady performer throughout his career, and back in 2023, then Fulham boss Marco Silva said: “He leads through his attitude, he’s not the most vocal guy and he’s improving his English as well. I want him to be more vocal and in that position it’s important. His attitude, his commitment, the way he leads the others around are things that are hard to find in football.

“In moments (when) we lose the ball, his reaction is impressive and we want to take the best from him and in other moments we want him to keep improving. We won the ball in a high area and our players took the right decisions. Then, the finish from Joao was great.”

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi, who ultimately changed his mind on signing Palhinha, said late last season: “We have to start from this type of person. We need reliable people as well as reliable players and Palhinha is one of the best. I want to see players with the same attitude, with the same passion, with the same spirit and personality. We are lucky to have Palhinha with us.”

Man Utd ‘Ask’ About Everton Target Oulai to Follow Tielemans

Manchester United are said to have enquired about a third midfield signing as they continue to ramp up their summer business. The Red Devils are close to announcing a £36million deal for Youri Tielemans, who will join from Aston Villa after his release clause was met.

That signing follows the £50million capture of Andrey Santos, adding much-needed strength and depth to the midfield, but there could yet be more.

While United are now likely to focus on other areas, with the defence in need of strengthening, while a winger signing could be sourced this summer, Michael Carrick may well add one more to the midfield.

Man Utd make enquiry over Oulai

According to journalist Nicolo Ceccarini, United have submitted an enquiry to Turkish club Trabzonspor over Christ Inao Oulai. It’s claimed the enquiry was only ‘gathering information’ at this stage, with the Red Devils likely just finding out how much a deal would cost.

Carrick may well want a third midfielder this summer, but with £86million already spent on two midfielders, it’s likely the third midfielder would likely be another affordable option worth less than £50million, rather than a marquee midfield signing.

Oulai is likely to fit into that bracket, only 20 years of age and likely to cost around £29.8million, according to recent reports. The Ivory Coast World Cup star is under contract until 2030, so there is no pressure for Trabzonspor to sell. Everton have also been linked with the midfielder this summer.

Oulai has other preferences

The bad news is that Oulai has a transfer preference, and it is not the Premier League. He said earlier this year: “Some people find it strange, but I like Ligue 1. I’m not attracted to the Premier League. I like Ligue 1!” he said with a smile, before naming his dream club. A club that makes me dream today? PSG. I like them. This new PSG plays really well.”

Former striker Roger Boli has previously said of Oulai’s talent: “He’s a young player with a high work rate, very active. He knows how to work hard and bring energy to his team. He’s like a great motivator, someone who brings a lot of energy. In short, he’s a very good player.”

Oulai also impressed at the African Cup of Nations, as well as the World Cup, and his form compared with his age makes him an inevitable target for Premier League clubs, even if he prefers a move elsewhere.

England Fans’ ‘Total Eclipse of Djed Spence’ World Cup Song Lyrics & Tune

England fans have never been shy about creating memorable terrace anthems, but their latest viral hit may be one of the most inventive yet. Inspired by Bonnie Tyler’s classic ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, supporters have reworked the 1983 power ballad into a tribute for the Spurs and Three Lions full-back.

The chant first gained widespread attention after England’s victory over Norway, with its witty lyrics and theatrical delivery earning praise from fans, pundits and social media alike. Far more than a traditional football chant, it has become a full parody song, celebrating Spence’s rise while introducing a new tune to England’s summer soundtrack.

One of Britain’s most popular football radio shows, BBC Radio 5 Live‘s 606, played host to the debut performance of the anthem. Former Premier League players Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton were leading England’s conversation about its recent 2-1 win over Norway, when singer-songwriter Ben Cipolla and his friend Dan phoned up the live show.

What followed was a dedicated ballad, complete with guitar and backing vocals, honoring the 25-year-old’s contribution to England’s run deep into the 2026 World Cup.

The song ‘Total Eclipse of Djed Spence’ was written and performed by Wiltshire-born singer-songwriter Ben Cipolla, whose musical influences include Nick Drake, Jack Johnson and John Martyn.

Djed Spence World Cup Song Lyrics

Djed Spence

Turn Around, Djed Spence,

Every Now And Then He’s Called Upon,

Turn Around, Djed Spence,

Every Now And Then He’s Called Upon,

England Needs You Now Tonight,

England Needs You More Than Ever,

If Your Broken Jaw Was Tight,

Now It’s Fully Back Together,

And You Know You Can Play Left Or Right,

Down The Wing Your So Strong,

You Take A Player On, And Do A Brilliant Job,

You Should’ve Had A Pen From Being Tackled By Bobb

We Really Loved You Tonight,

Oh Djed, You’re Such A Star Tonight,

Oh Djed, You’re Such A Star,

Once Upon A Time, He Was Loaned Out To Rennes,

Now He’s One Of England’s Best,

Solid In Defense, Total Eclipse Of Djed Spence

With the sad news of Bonnie Tyler’s death just three days before England faced Norway, the parody song didn’t just sing the praises of Djed Spence and his England teammates, but provided a timely tribute to a pop legend.

The Welsh singer’s original song, ‘Total Eclipse of The Heart’, was released in February 1983, as the lead single from her fifth studio album, ‘Faster Than the Speed of Night’.

The song quickly became Tyler’s biggest hit, topping both the UK and US singles charts and selling over 13 million copies worldwide.

The catchy parody song comes after Djed Spence’s contribution to England’s effort in bringing football home from the 2026 World Cup.

The former Leeds and Nottingham Forest star earned his first England call-up in August 2025, before making his first England cap as a 69th minute replacement for Reece James in his side’s 5-0 victory over Serbia, on 9th September 2025, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

At what is his first World Cup, the Tottenham Hotspur full-back, who has reportedly received interest from Liverpool this summer, has appeared in every one of his nation’s games so far, having been named in the starting XI for England’s 0-0 group stage draw with Ghana, as well as their round of 32 clash with the DR Congo.

Gianni Infantino at Risk of Losing FIFA Presidency to Dariusz Mioduski

Published

It has been a World Cup in which FIFA president Gianni Infantino has sparked a lot of headlines. They say all publicity is good publicity, but for the Swiss football administrator, he may have drawn a little too much heat this summer, with reports suggesting his job is now at risk.

There have been several controversial incidents, with the most notable event coming when FIFA intervened to allow USMNT striker Folarin Balogun to play against Belgium despite his red card in the previous game. There were suggestions that Infantino bowed to pressure from US President Donald Trump, with whom his close relationship has been well-publicised and criticised.

As a result, there have been some calls for Infantino to step down, with England legend Gary Lineker calling his position as head of FIFA ‘untenable.’ According to new reports, the 56-year-old may now struggle to keep hold of his job in the next election.

UEFA Federations Consider New Candidate to Run Against Infantino

As per TalkSport, there are growing support from UEFA federations to back a candidate to run against Infantino at the next FIFA presidential election. In April, the Swiss administrator confirmed he plans on having a third term in charge, and had been hoping to run unopposed.

According to the new reports, however, his involvement with the Balogun World Cup red card suspenion has left many within UEFA unhappy. At the time, the European football association shared a strong statement, claiming that the decision had ‘crossed a red line’.

Subsequent reports have highlighted Infantino’s growing lack of popularity, with one senior football source explaining: “Infantino’s power has dried up, he is very isolated now – he will be a lame-duck president.”

While Infantino can say he was not directly involved, it’s perhaps not a great look for the president that the decision to suspend Balogun’s ban was reportedly taken solely by the chairman of FIFA’s disciplinary committee Mohammad Al-Kamali.

All this has now led to claims that there could be support for other candidates within UEFA when it comes to voting for a new FIFA boss.

Legia Warsaw Owner Dariusz Mioduski Emerges as Early Candidate

Dariusz Mioduski

Not only is there talk that a new candidate could be put forward, but a figure has appeared as an early favourite for the job. While UEFA President Alexander Ceferin would be the most qualified name, the Slovenian lawyer is understood to be willing to continue in his current role. He had initially ruled out standing for a third full term until 2031, but is now ready to seek re-election if no other candidates step forward. The TalkSport report notes that Ceferin is not looking to go head-to-head with Infantino despite clashing on issues on a number of occasions.

It’s claimed that UEFA federations, including Belgium and Poland, would back a move for PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi to stand at the next election. But it’s stated that he has no such ambition to stand for office, so would take significant persuading.

As such, the most likely European candidate appears to be Legia Warsaw owner Dariusz Mioduski. The 62-year-old Polish lawyer is said to be one of the names discussed with Bosnian, Norwegian, Swedish, German and Spanish football federations considering possible European candidates.

Finally, outside of UEFA, CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani has been touted as a possible successor to Infantino. Both he and African Football president Patrice Motsepe, who is another name in the mix, are said to have aspirations of becoming FIFA president one day.
