Why Argentina’s Dark Blue Away Kit is Considered ‘Lucky’

Published

on

The iconic sky blue and white stripes of Argentina’s home kit may be one of the most recognisable shirts in world football, but it’s the nation’s dark blue away strip that has earned itself a reputation as being ‘lucky’.

Worn during some of the biggest victories in Albiceleste’s history, the strip has become synonymous with success on the grandest stage. Across decades of international competition, the blue shirt has appeared at pivotal moments when Argentina have needed it most.

Whether by chance or something more, its association with memorable triumphs has fueled a long-standing superstition among supporters, with each new success adding another chapter to the kit’s growing folklore.

Why Argentina’s Dark Blue Kit is ‘Lucky’

Diego Maradona Hand of God Argentina vs England 1986 World Cup

Due to the fact that England have been selected as the ‘home’ side ahead of their semi-final clash with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, and FIFA’s desire for a light-and-dark kit contrast to benefit TV viewers, the South-American side were always going to don their away strip.

However, even though the tournament organizers prefer both teams to wear their home colours if possible, the Argentinians requested to wear their second kit.

And whilst some have attributed the decision as a way to prevent a kit clash, Argentinian journalists have started to believe that the alternative strip could help deliver success on the pitch.

The dark blue shirt is supposedly linked to World Cup wins over England in 1986 and 1998.

In 1986, Diego Maradona scored two of the World Cup’s most famous goals of all time whilst wearing the changed strip. The first, now dubbed the ‘Hand of God’, saw the Argentinian rise above England keeper, Peter Shilton, and handle the ball, directing it goalward.

The second goal was remembered for more honorable reasons, with Maradona dribbling around five English players, before slotting home his second of the game, and scoring what became known as the ‘goal of the century’.

And in 1998, Argentina’s dark blue kit featured in another World Cup win against the English. After Alan Shearer and Gabriel Batistuta traded penalties in the opening ten minutes, goals from Javier Zanetti and Michael Owen saw the sides level as David Beckham was sent off early in the second half, after kicking out at Diego Simeone. The South Americans ended up winning 5-4 on penalties to advance to the quarter-finals.

Argentina wore dark blue kits in their World Cup victories against England in 1986 and 1998, but not in their World Cup 2002 defeat to the Three Lions, a game in which they wore the traditional ‘Albiceleste’ colours.

Argentina’s Shirt Colours Explained

Whilst Argentina have long been associated with their blue-and-white striped home shirt, the story behind their second kit stems from the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

During the group stage, Argentina were drawn to face West Germany, whose home shirt was also predominantly white. At the time, Argentina did not travel with a change of kit, and were left to scramble for a replacement strip.

Enter Swedish club IFK Malmö. The Scandinavian side gave the Argentinian delegation their distinctive royal blue kit, allowing the game to go ahead.

However, Argentina lost the match 3-1, so the borrowed kits were initially remembered for the wrong reasons. Nevertheless, the colour remained associated with the national team, with the Argentine Football Association later adopting blue as the country’s official away colour.

Celtic Confident of Sealing Double Transfer Next Week

Published

Celtic are confident that they will be able to secure a double deal this week for Martin O’Neill to begin strengthening their squad, according to TEAMtalk.

The Scottish champions have so far made just one signing, bringing in forward Camilo Duran in a deal worth around £5m, but they are expecting a number of first-team stars to depart, and O’Neill is looking to bring several players in to help rebuild.

The Hoops suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of Sporting CP in their opening pre-season friendly this week, which saw fans chant ‘sack the board’ from the stands, and that has kicked them into gear in an attempt to strengthen the squad as quickly as possible.

Celtic Confident of Double Deal

Martin O'Neill arrives at Tynecastle Park for Hearts vs Celtic

According to a report, Celtic have already held talks with both Utretcht and winger Adrian Blake about a deal to take him to Glasgow, while Egyptian midfielder Haissem Hassan is also someone they are working on bringing in.

The 20-year-old winger is into the final year of his contract with the Eredivisie club, and is valued at around £2.5m, which Celtic see as good value for a highly-rated forward. However, his contract situation means they will look to work a fee down, although there is confidence a deal can be completed.

In addition to Blake, Celtic are also working hard on a deal to bring in Egypt international Hassan following his performances at the World Cup this summer.

The midfielder is available this summer, and the Hoops have been in regular contact with his representatives as they look to persuade him to move to Glasgow rather than a club in the top five leagues, where he is understood to have interest.

Celtic are hopeful their ability to offer Champions League football will aid them in their pursuit of both players, and there is confidence both deals could be completed next week if everything goes to plan.

Celtic Need Big Rebuild

Celtic caretaker manager Martin O'Neill looks on during win vs Stuttgart

Celtic will count themselves lucky to have been crowned champions last season despite a poor campaign by their own standards, and they know they need to rebuild the squad to ensure that doesn’t happen again.

Players like Daizen Maeda, Benjamin Nygren and Arne Engels are all being targeted by clubs abroad, and replacing them will be a thankless task for those in charge of the Glasgow club.

But bringing in top talents and experienced options will help to bring back the balance, and O’Neill knows what it takes to build a title-winning side, so it’s a situation to watch closely in the coming days.

Donald Trump Facing Awkward World Cup Final Meeting With Spain

Donald Trump has never shied away from the limelight and is expected to bask in the attention that accompanies a World Cup final.

The President of the United States of America has been noticeably absent during the entire competition, having not attended a single game so far. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t made a mark on world football’s biggest stage.

He got involved on the USA’s behalf after Folarin Balogun’s controversial red card vs Bosnia & Herzegovina. That’s unlikely to be the end of Trump’s contributions, with the biggest game of the summer still to come.

The 80-year-old is expected to be present at MetLife Stadium on Sunday for the World Cup final. Spain qualified with a comfortable victory against the favourites, France.

However, it’s clear to see where Trump’s loyalties will likely lie for the huge clash. Matters away from the pitch have led to significant tension between the US and Spain in recent times, and the President hasn’t minced his words when discussing the European nation.

During a recent NATO meeting, he stated that he wanted to cut off all trade relations with Spain. He even went as far as calling the country ‘a wasted cause’.

“Spain is a wasted cause. We don’t want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way. I’d like to cut it off. Spain is a terrible partner in NATO.

“They don’t participate. They don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain.”

Continuing his rant, the American leader labelled the nation ‘hopeless’ and said ‘we don’t want anything to do with them’.

He added: “Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visits. We don’t want anything to do (with them). Watch them come running back… but we don’t have to trade with them.

“They’re hopeless, bad people because they have everybody else going and paying and working.”

Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, actually claimed relations between the two countries were ‘very positive’. He also revealed a brief football-related conversation he had with Trump.

He explained (according to talkSPORT): “We talked about the World Cup… there was no tension whatsoever, on the contrary, it was all very friendly.”

Despite that comment, it would still be very interesting to see Trump hand Spain the World Cup if they win the final. Gianni Infantino already revealed that the President would be handing the trophy to the winners of the competition.

Top 25 Players Predicted By AI

The fourth and final men’s Major of the 2026 golf season gets underway as the Open Championship takes place at Royal Birkdale, beginning on Thursday. This year’s tournament will be the 154th edition and marks the 11th time it has been held at the Merseyside course.

The biggest names in the sport will be going all out for glory at the historic tournament. Royal Birkdale is a course that favours accurate driving and measured approach play, meaning that raw power alone isn’t likely to be enough for a player to get their hands on the Claret Jug after Sunday’s final round,

In total, a field of 156 players will take to the course hoping to emerge victorious. However, in an effort to find the players to watch, we asked ChatGPT to name the 25 players who will feature on the leaderboard at the conclusion of the tournament.

The supercomputer made a number of significant calls when delivering its verdict. Among those not to make the top 25 are two-time Major winner Bryson DeChambeau and Wyndham Clark, who won the US Open last month.

Below is a look at those who do make the cut, including a big-name winner.

25-11

Shane Lowry at The Masters

American Patrick Cantlay kicks off the top 25, despite worrying recent form which has seen him miss the cut in four of his last six tournaments.

A number of former winners of the Open are predicted to have strong showings, without cracking the top 10. Brian Harman, the 2023 winner, will not be fazed by the task at hand, but may struggle to challenge the leading contenders this time around, according to AI.

The same is true of 2019 champion, Shane Lowry, whose recent form is cited as a cause for concern, hence his predicted equal 15th place finish.

Among those to miss out on a top 10 berth are the usually reliable Ludvig Alberg and this year’s PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai (both tied for 12th, alongside Robert MacIntyre.

Scottie Scheffler in action at the US Open

The top 10 opens up with a tie for 10th involving Tom Kim and Viktor Hovland. Kim’s precision game is ideally suited to Royal Birkdale, while Hovland’s recent improvement in his tee-to-green game offer reason for him to be optimistic heading into the tournament.

England’s Justin Rose has considerable experience at the course and is tipped to use that to his advantage to secure a tie for eighth place with Collin Morikawa on six under.

Spaniard Jon Rahm undoubtedly possesses the talent to go all the way, but his driving accuracy has been flagged as a huge concern, which is why the 31-year-old can expect a finish of no better than a tie for sixth with Tyrrell Hatton, according to the technology.

Rory McIlroy

2024 winner Xander Schauffele is predicted to finish no better than tied for fourth, alongside Rory McIlroy. The American has a strong record at The Open, but could only finish tied for 20th at the same course in 2017.

McIlroy, meanwhile, has the class necessary to win the tournament for a second time, but his power-first game doesn’t match up well on paper with the course.

In terms of the podium, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood is predicted to take third, with a scorecard of 10-under for the tournament. He has been a consistent performer at The Open and his accurate ball-striking is cited as a huge advantage. The only question mark against the 35-year-old is whether he can handle the expectations of a home crowd.

Matt Fitzpatrick is taken to fill the runner-up spot. The 31-year-old was praised by the technology for being “accurate, tactically disciplined and excellent around the greens” and his precision game should see him go close.

Having crunched all the numbers though, AI sees The Open of 2026 going the same way as it did 12 months ago. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler knows just what it takes to negotiate the high-pressure environment of an Open week.

That he missed the cut at the Scottish Open is described as “a minor concern”, but the American’s “consistency, elite approach play and ability to solve difficult courses” was heralded as a decisive factor when the supercomputer came to making its final call. Scheffler is tipped to beat Fitzpatrick by one stroke and finish on 12 under for the tournament.
