Conor McGregor’s Outrageous World Cup Final Bet Lost Him A Lot of Money

Published

on

After disappointment at UFC 329, where his highly anticipated comeback was cut short by injury, Conor McGregor turned his attention away from the Octagon and to the football pitch over the weekend.

The UFC superstar revealed to fans on his social media who he was backing to win the FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, as well as the tipster whose lead he was following.

After toppling France and England in their respective semi-finals, Spain and Argentina faced off in New Jersey for the crown.

In a game that many considered to be very disappointing, Spain finally broke Argentina’s stubborn resistance in the second-half of extra-time when Ferran Torres, formerly of Manchester City, scored after 106 minutes.

Until then, the Spaniards had been left frustrated by an Argentina side that did not even have a shot at goal until 116 minutes were on the clock. They had to put up with a side that seemed to have little interest in playing football, despite having the mercurial Lionel Messi playing in likely his last World Cup.

Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the closing moments of normal time for a second yellow card, leaving Argentina massively up against it heading into an additional 30 minutes.

Despite a string of fine saves from Emiliano Martinez in the Argentina goal, Spain eventually broke through to become the first nation ever to be both men and women’s world champions simultaneously.

So, that begs the question, did McGregor win his bet? Well, no, no he didn’t.

Conor McGregor’s World Cup Final Bet

McGregor revealed he was betting on Argentina to emerge 3-2 victors over Spain in the World Cup final, based on a tweet from “some guy on the internet” from five years ago.

In July 2021, the account @actuallyimthe wrote: “Argentina just beat Spain at the 2026 World Cup final, 3-2.”

That was all McGregor needed, explaining to fans: “Why am I doing this? Five years ago, some guy on the internet predicted that Argentina and Spain would be in the World Cup final and the score would be 3-2. How did this guy know these boys would be in the final? And then they are. And then the score is 3-2. I’m going with him.”

With McGregor’s bet for Argentina to win within 90 minutes, it was already looking bleak as they struggled to show themselves as much of an attacking force through a dour 90 minutes.

McGregor did even quote tweet the social media user, asking, “Bro, real quick, is that within the 90 mins?” before kick-off, though, ultimately, he was never close to seeing the bet land.

The bet McGregor placed was 36-1, with the Irishman splashing $100,000.

Had Argentina emerged as 3-2 victors over their Spanish counterparts, that would have netted the UFC fighter a payout of $3.6 million.

Locker Room Growing Frustrated With Triple H

Published

Triple H is a 14-time world champion in WWE with a 30-year career in wrestling from 1992 until his retirement in 2022 due to health problems.

He was widely commended for his work as a villain in his career, and in 2011, the Pro Wrestling Torch claimed that he was ‘widely regarded as the best wrestler in North America by 2000.’

He was ranked seventh on a list of the 20 greatest WWE wrestlers of all time by Sports Illustrated, with eight of his WrestleMania matches considered among the best matches in ‘Mania history, including his match-ups with The Undertaker, John Cena, Randy Orton, and Shawn Michaels.

While still wrestling, Triple H was appointed executive vice-president of talent, live events, and creative, allowing him to work on the storylines for wrestling matches with WWE’s creative team. This earned him criticism for allegedly abusing his influence and having himself featured in high-profile matches or having match or feud finishes changed in his favour.

Following his marriage to Stephanie McMahon, the daughter of the former WWE CEO Vince McMahon, the wrestler was accused of using his relationship with the McMahon family to monopolise the spotlight and steal the attention from newer talent.

But now, Triple H is finding himself at odds with the current crop of WWE Superstars in his role as chief content officer, which he was appointed to in 2022. The position involves overseeing the company’s creative writing, talent relations, live events, talent development, and creative services department.

It is in talent relations where his troubles lie, and he’s finding himself under fire.

In the last four months, there have been major departures from WWE, with established names such as Kairi Sane, Aleister Black, The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods), and Sheamus bidding the promotion farewell, with the latter leaving when his contract expires.

This has sparked unease and discontent backstage. According to an exclusive report by Sportskeeda, the 56-year-old is not a popular figure with his decisions being called into question. The report alleged that there was a constant state of unhappiness among the WWE talent, who expressed their displeasure with Triple H and President Nick Khan, who they believed were calling the shots.

“There’s an unfortunate constant state of unhappiness among some stars backstage right now,” the report from Sportskeeda said.

“People are not happy with Triple H or Nick Khan, who they feel are making the calls. Sheamus, Austin, Kofi leaving did HORRIBLE DAMAGE to the morale. They were all loved by the roster.”

The exits of Kingston, Woods, and Sheamus negatively impacted the morale within the locker room due to their popularity, and people have claimed that despite a wrestler being popular, management could decide it’s time for them to move aside.

“There is a feeling where everyone is asking who’s next,” the report continued. “They also think that stars not being as hot as they were at one time is an issue with the creative.

“One wrestler said that someone could try their best to get over, but they’d get cooled down by WWE if they didn’t want them over, and then they’d be let go. Kit Wilson’s name has been brought up backstage as his push has been entirely cooled with this Danhausen story surrounding him, even though Danhausen and he and everyone around it is enjoying it at the moment.”

Triple H has not had the opportunity to defend himself, with The Game preparing for SummerSlam in Minnesota, which will take place between the 1st and 2nd of August. It remains to be seen whether he’ll try to downplay the speculation or simply ignore it, but fans are sure to be watching his actions more closely from now on.

Emi Martinez’s Half-Time Argentina Speech Leaks

Published

on

By

After a fantastic tournament, the World Cup final did not quite deliver the same level of spectacular action. A single Ferran Torres goal in extra-time was enough to see Spain beat Argentina 1-0.

That’s not to say there weren’t plenty of talking points from the game. There has been a great deal of criticism for the way the Argentine’s approach the match, as they posed more threat to the Spanish players’ well-being than to Unai Simon’s goal.

Enzo Fernandez was sent off for two yellow cards, while Leandro Paredes could face punishment after scrapping with Eric Garcia and Gavi after the full-time whistle. Beyond those moments, Lionel Scaloni’s men put up little fight in a footballing sense, and that makes the half-time comments of Emiliano Martinez rather interesting in hindsight.

The scores were level at the break, but Argentina had yet to register a single shot on goal. At the other end, goalkeeper Martinez had been forced to make some key saves.

As per Goal, the Argentine shot-stopper was clearly unhappy with his teammates at half-time as he tried to fire them up. He even went as far as to suggest they were ‘cowards’ if they didn’t look to be more progressive with their passing:

“Come on, with heart, boys, hey. Playing with heart means driving forward, not going backwards, forward. Forward, forward, forward, forward. Cowards play backwards, let’s move forward. Three passes and we find Leo, let me see us build it from the back too.”

The report notes that captain Lionel Messi then added: “Come on, boys, character, everyone, character. We’ve always had it, aren’t we going to show it now? Come on, hey. Character to play, let’s play our football, let’s play, come on.”

Martinez’s comments didn’t appear to help much as Spain continued to dominate proceedings, with Argentina becoming the first team to go 90 minutes in a World Cup final without mustering a shot on goal. Their first efforts would finally come in extra-time, but they couldn’t find the back of the net, with Torres’s 106th-minute strike winning the game for Spain instead.

It’s interesting that Martinez felt the need to try and lift his teammates with a passionate speech during the break, as footage has emerged before the game where many players looked unusually subdued. In the tunnel ahead of kick-off, Messi was heard saying:

“Let’s stay calm, boys. Forget about everything else. Forget about everything. Let’s just think about playing, that’s all.”

His comments sparked theories about an unseen incident in the dressing room, although it has since emerged that the players may have simply been left emotional after their captain revealed it would likely be his final game for Argentina. Messi has yet to confirm his international retirement, but it does seem likely at this point.

Cristiano Ronaldo Instagram Account ‘Likes’ Controversial Post About Argentina

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Instagram account has been caught ‘liking’ an eyebrow-raising post about Argentina and Lionel Messi.

Argentina were beaten by Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium after Ferran Torres scored the game’s only goal in extra-time.

Messi, who’d scored eight goals and provided four assists prior to the final, was unable to make an impact against Luis de la Fuente’s side. The 39-year-old was subsequently beaten to the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards by Kylian Mbappe and Rodri, respectively.

Argentina, champions in 2022, have received heavy criticism throughout the tournament.

Conspiracy theories suggesting Argentina were benefitting from favourable refereeing decisions became widespread on social media, while the behaviour of Lionel Scaloni’s players after their World Cup final defeat has been lambasted by fans and pundits alike.

FIFA have opened an investigation and may take action against Argentina’s players and coaching staff who were involved in the post-match altercations that marred Sunday’s final.

Per GOAL, Ronaldo’s verified Instagram account with 677 million followers appeared to like a video post that accused FIFA of corruption in order to help Argentina reach the 2026 World Cup final.

The post features ‘scathing criticism’ from Spanish journalist Pilar Rodriguez Losantos regarding alleged refereeing bias displayed towards the South American nation throughout the showpiece international tournament in North America.

On the video, uploaded prior to the final, Losantos states: “Argentina should have been eliminated at least five matches ago! They are only still in the tournament thanks to help from FIFA, which is one of the most corrupt institutions on planet earth!

“So, I’m not afraid of Argentina at all; I’m more afraid of Gianni Infantino. I think we’re not going to play against Argentina, but against the whole of FIFA, who want to hand the World Cup to Lionel Messi!”

‘Rigged’ Accusations Categorically Denied

Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer, released a statement categorically denying any suggestions that the tournament was ‘rigged’ in favour of Argentina following accusations from Egypt’s players and coaching staff in the last 16.

“Of course, constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport.” Collina said, after French referee Francois Letexier’s integrity was called into question. “Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials. When this happens, it may provoke reactions that lead to threats against them and their families. This is not right.”

Meanwhile, former FIFA referee and ex-PMGOL chief Keith Hackett said: “One area that I would dispute very strongly are claims that games are being fixed at World Cup level or any level of the game.

“There are sufficient checks and balances in place, and a filtering system to ensure that this does not happen.

“The laws of the game are subjective. I can get 100 referees in a room looking at a potential incident and not necessarily getting 100 referees to agree with the outcome. That’s the game of football. Those are the laws of the game.”
