Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a suspected abduction attempt along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, rescuing the victim unhurt and restoring calm to the area.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 26th July, 2026, at about 7:10 p.m. at Onigaari area of the expressway.

Confirming the development to DAILY POST on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said operatives of the Command’s Safer Highway Patrol Team were on routine confidence-building patrol when they heard gunshots from the area.

According to Babaseyi, the swift response and tactical presence of the police forced the hoodlums to abandon their criminal mission and flee into the adjoining bush.

“The operatives immediately responded after hearing gunshots. Their swift intervention forced the suspects to abandon the victim and flee,” Babaseyi said.

The PRO stated that the victim was rescued unhurt and escorted to the Ogunmakin Police Post alongside his vehicle for safety and necessary police procedures.

Babaseyi noted that normalcy was immediately restored, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the professionalism, courage and vigilance displayed by the operatives involved in both operations.

Ojajuni stated that the successes reflect the Command’s enhanced operational capacity and unwavering resolve to respond swiftly to distress calls and decisively confront all forms of criminality.

The CP reassured residents that the Command remains firmly in control of the security situation across Ogun State and will continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, visibility policing, strategic patrols, and coordinated tactical operations to sustain public peace and safety.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support the police with timely information through the Gateway Shield platform, assuring that every actionable report will receive prompt attention.

Barely one week after the controversy surrounding the alleged assault that reportedly led to the death of 15-year-old Busang Ayuka, another member of the Taraba State Marshal has been accused of attacking a resident with a cutlass in Takum Local Government Council of the state.

The latest victim, identified as Emmanuel Abonta, a resident of Angwan Cameroon Quarters in Takum, reportedly sustained injuries to his hand following a confrontation with a marshal attached to the council.

According to information gathered, the incident occurred after an argument between the marshal and Abonta allegedly escalated into violence.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the marshal drew a cutlass during the altercation and attacked the victim, inflicting visible injuries on him.

Abonta was immediately rushed to a hospital in Takum, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

The circumstances that led to the disagreement remain unclear, and as of the time of filing this report, neither the state government nor the leadership of the Taraba Marshals had issued an official statement regarding the allegation.

The incident comes at a time when public concern over the conduct of some Taraba Marshals is already high following the reported assault of 15-year-old Busang Ayuka, whose death sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability. With the dust from that incident yet to settle, the latest allegation has further heightened anxiety among residents.

Community members who spoke with DAILY POST, called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, urging the authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.

Elder Bernard Useni expressed concern over what he described as the increasing misconduct of some marshals.

“The ill-attitude of some Taraba Marshals towards ordinary citizens is becoming a serious concern. A thorough investigation should be carried out to expose the bad eggs within the Marshal,” he said.

Another community leader, Maina Uba, advocated mandatory drug screening for all prospective recruits into the Marshal Corps.

“I believe some of these young men wearing Marshal uniforms are drug addicts. There should be compulsory drug tests for anyone seeking recruitment into the Marshal,” he stated.

Residents also stressed the need for improved training, professionalism, discipline, and stronger oversight of the Marshal Corps to prevent similar incidents.

As investigations continue, many residents are urging the relevant authorities to handle the matter transparently and implement reforms aimed at restoring public confidence while preventing future cases of alleged abuse by security personnel.

At least 11 people have been killed in separate bandit attacks on communities in Rabah and Sabon Birni local government areas of Sokoto State, deepening concerns over the worsening security situation in the region.

The latest attack occurred on Monday in Maikujera village, Rabah LGA, where seven people lost their lives, including two operatives of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps (SCGC).

Three women were also killed in nearby Angamba village during the assault.

The incident came less than 24 hours after suspected bandits, reportedly dressed in military uniforms, attacked Unguwan Lalle community in Sabon Birni LGA, killing four residents and leaving several others injured.

According to security sources, the attackers stormed Maikujera on more than 30 motorcycles at about 2:30 p.m., opening fire on residents and abducting an unspecified number of people.

An SCGC operative confirmed that two members of the corps were killed while attempting to defend the community.

“We rushed to protect the residents, but the attackers were too many. They arrived on more than 30 motorcycles and overwhelmed our men,” the operative said.

He further alleged that community guards were operating under difficult conditions due to inadequate logistics, including a lack of armoured vehicles and insufficient ammunition.

According to Daily Trust, a police source said “the attackers were believed to have entered the area from Bakura in neighbouring Zamfara State”.

The bandits allegedly attempted to rustle livestock and began shooting when residents resisted, although a military base is located near the community, security personnel reportedly arrived after the attackers had escaped into the Bakura forest.

In the earlier attack on Unguwan Lalle, residents said about 200 heavily armed bandits wearing military uniforms invaded the village around 8 p.m. on Sunday and operated for nearly six hours.

Residents said the gunmen looted homes and shops, rustled livestock and shot at villagers attempting to flee.

“We thought they were soldiers because of their uniforms. They surrounded the village, opened fire and carted away our belongings and livestock,” one resident recounted.

The victims were identified as Bilyaminu Wakkala and Danbaki Tulunawa, while the identities of the other two victims were linked to nearby Kongurus village. Residents also claimed the attackers struck less than an hour after troops who had responded to an earlier security incident withdrew from the community.

The spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the killing of a farmer in the area but said details of the Unguwan Lalle attack were still being verified.

Sokoto Government Orders Closure of Schools Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Government has ordered the closure of all public primary and secondary schools outside the state capital due to the deteriorating security situation.

The directive, which took effect on Monday, exempts schools in Sokoto North and Sokoto South LGAs, as well as selected schools in Wamakko, Dange Shuni and Kware.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmed Ladan Ala, said the decision followed a Federal Government directive aimed at protecting students and staff amid rising insecurity.

As a result, all affected public schools across the state will remain closed until further notice.

The closure comes as schools enter the final weeks of the third term and prepare for end-of-term examinations scheduled for next week.
