Osun Guber: Accord raises alarm over alleged election materials theft plot

The Osun State chapter of the Accord has raised concerns over an alleged plot to steal sensitive election materials ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The party also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security agencies to take urgent preventive measures.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Osun State Chairman of the party, Pastor Victor Babalola Akande, the party claimed it had received credible intelligence suggesting that opposition elements were planning to compromise the electoral process through the theft and concealment of election materials.

“The alleged plot is aimed at preventing the timely deployment of sensitive election materials to selected polling units across the state, a situation that could disenfranchise thousands of eligible voters,” the statement said.

The party stated that the alleged disruption of election logistics could undermine the credibility of the governorship poll if appropriate safeguards were not put in place before election day.

Accord urged INEC to ensure that every stage of the handling of sensitive election materials, including storage, movement and distribution, is subjected to strict accountability and security measures.

“The people of Osun State are expecting the Commission to conduct a free, fair and transparent election. Any negligence or complicity that allows sensitive election materials to be diverted, withheld or outrightly stolen will be viewed as a grave betrayal of the constitutional responsibility entrusted to the electoral body,” the statement read.

The party also appealed to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, DSS, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and other relevant agencies, to investigate the alleged intelligence and take preventive action before the election.

According to the statement, “proactive intervention by security agencies would be more effective than responding after any disruption had occurred during the electoral process.”

Accord warned that it would oppose, through lawful and democratic means, any attempt to steal, divert or deliberately conceal election materials with the intention of disenfranchising voters or manipulating the outcome of the election.

“The sovereign will of the people of Osun State cannot and must not be subverted through electoral sabotage,” the party stated.

The party also called on residents of Osun State to remain peaceful, vigilant and law-abiding while reporting any suspicious movement or handling of election materials to the appropriate authorities.

“The August 15 governorship election as a significant moment for democracy in Osun State. All stakeholders should ensure that the electoral process is conducted without interference or acts capable of undermining its credibility,” the statement concluded.

Osun Guber: Adeleke, APC campaign councils clash over alleged oath-taking video

The Osun State All Progressives Council, APC, Governorship Campaign Council and The Imole Campaign Council, TICC, have traded accusations over a social media video allegedly showing groups of citizens taking oaths of allegiance ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election.

The APC campaign council, in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Publicity Committee, Oluremi Omowaiye, expressed concern over the video and alleged that it was connected to Governor Ademola Adeleke and the Accord Party.

The council described the alleged oath-taking as “a dangerous descent into political desperation and an affront to citizens’ freedom to vote according to their conscience”.

It called on security agencies, election observers and other stakeholders to investigate the development.

According to the APC, the video represented another form of alleged voter inducement and coercion. It added that the development is linked to an earlier allegation that some civil servants were given N20,000 ahead of the election.

The APC alleged that the reported oath-taking reflected desperation by the Adeleke administration ahead of the poll.

It claimed that the governor should instead be seeking votes based on his record since assuming office in 2022.

The campaign council also alleged that Adeleke’s administration spent more than N11.9 billion on travels and hotel accommodation in 2025, contrasting the figure with alleged payments of N10,000 or N20,000 to voters. The statement did not provide supporting documentation for the spending claim.

However, the Imole Campaign Council rejected the allegations and said Governor Adeleke had no connection with the video.

In a statement signed by its Media Committee Chairman, Representative Bamidele Salam, the council said it was examining the “authenticity, source and circumstances surrounding the footage”.

The Imole Campaign Council stated that Governor Adeleke had neither authorised, participated in, directed nor endorsed any oath-taking activity in connection with the election.

“Governor Adeleke is a democrat who believes fundamentally in the freedom of citizens to make their political choices according to their conscience. He did not require oaths, threats, intimidation or any form of coercion to secure votes,” he said.

The campaign council said the governor’s campaign was based on his administration’s record, vision and relationship with the electorate.

It urged the APC to focus on issues including roads, healthcare, education, workers’ welfare, infrastructure and rural development.

The Imole Campaign Council also accused the APC of attempting to turn an unverified social media video into a campaign issue, arguing that the source and circumstances surrounding the footage had not been established.

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu will be the last of the “embarrassing presidents” Nigeria will have.

Recall that a delegation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria visited President Tinubu on Tuesday, July 28.

Remarks by Tinubu, the Presidency and Archbishop Emeritus of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, triggered a wave of controversy.

Onaiyekan said Tinubu rejected their concerns over the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

Reacting, Adebayo said the Catholic bishops should have immediately called for an emergency national prayer for Tinubu.

According to him, the President should have been more responsible in his remarks to the Catholic bishops, who came to him with concerns about the situation of Nigerians.

“What is surprising to me is how the Catholic bishops could meet with President Tinubu and listen to President Tinubu talk the way he talked, and they left the Villa without calling for emergency national prayer.

“Because that President that they met there cannot be the kind of President God wanted us to have. So, I said our sins are too many that God gave us that kind of President, or the President’s own personal sins is too much that God is letting him expose himself.

“I went to Catholic school, and when you see someone behaving like that, they call everybody together. So, what I look forward to is the clergy, the Catholic bishops, and others to start praying.

“They need prayers; they need to be told the truth.

“But I believe that President Tinubu, I hope, is the last of the embarrassing Presidents that we will be having,” he said.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, in Osun State has described President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to vacate the court order freezing the state government account as a demonstration of respect for democratic principles and the rule of law.

Osun IPAC also said the development reinforced confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
