Atletico Madrid have agreed terms with Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, GIVEMESPORT understands.
Spurs are prepared to sell the 28-year-old for around £35m, and Atletico Madrid are already in club-to-club talks with a bid expected.
Romero made no secret of his desire to leave Tottenham last summer, even revealing in interviews he wanted to play in La Liga one day. Atletico Madrid had not come forward until now but in the last few weeks have decided to rekindle their interest.

Tottenham Ready to Sanction Romero Exit
Spurs are willing to sell the Argentina international, having added Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, and with Micky van der Ven set to sign a new contract. Although nothing is yet signed with Dutchman van der Ven, talks are advanced, with Roberto De Zerbi a big factor in the Dutch defender’s decision to stay.
Romero is contracted until 2029, and with Van Hecke costing £52m from Brighton with just one year left on his deal, Spurs would be entitled to seek an equivalent fee. Yet an exit is viewed as suiting all parties, and that has in part informed Tottenham’s valuation.
Inter have also been in talks with Spurs but are yet to agree personal terms with the Argentina international, who was a key member of the national team which reached a second consecutive World Cup final this summer. GIVEMESPORT understands Romero prefers to join Atletico Madrid, and is waiting to see if the clubs can agree a fee.
Arsenal have also discussed Romero, but are yet to make an approach to Spurs. Tottenham sources insist if they do so, it would be instantly dismissed as there is no desire to sell Romero to their north London rivals.

Romero Hailed as ‘World-Class’
Getty Images
Romero has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since arriving, and his centre-back partner Micky Van de Ven has regularly sung his praises, describing him as ‘world-class’ during their time together.
“For me, he is world-class. He is a leader. He is always one hundred per cent. He is a top-class player with the ball and without the ball when defending.
“I can promise you he is not scared of anyone. He keeps going every game. From day one here he has helped me. He is just a world-class player.”
Romero joined Spurs on an initial loan from Atalanta in August 2021, and a year later the move was made permanent. Romero has gone on to make 156 appearances for Spurs and captain the side, winning the 2024/25 Europa League under Ange Postecoglou.

Son of Scott Steiner and cousin of WWE Superstar Bron Breakker may have just seen his brief NFL career come to an end.
Brock Rechsteiner is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Rechsteiner, who is more famously known as ‘Big Poppa Pump’ Scott Steiner.
Steiner is not the only famous wrestler in the family, with Rechsteiner also being cousins with current WWE Raw Superstar Bron Breakker.
Brock played wide receiver for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks until 2025 and went unselected in the NFL draft, but the Tennessee Titans picked him up as an undrafted free agent. However, he was later invited to the New Orleans Saints’ rookie minicamp, where he signed as an undrafted rookie in May.
Brock Rechsteiner Hit With Shock NFL Suspension
Unfortunately, his chances of making the team’s 53-man roster for the upcoming season took a blow after he received the news that he would be suspended for the first six games of the campaign.
News of his suspension was announced by the league on the personnel notice for Thursday but no reason was given for the suspension.
According to ESPN Senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, Rechsteiner is eligible to participate in all preseason activities, including games, and his suspension will take effect when rosters are reduced to 53 players. Until now, the 23-year-old has been competing for a spot on the Saints’ roster.
If Brock wasn’t already facing a tough battle to make the cut, news of his suspension may well have brought an end to his NFL dream. If that does end up being the case, though, Rechsteiner has a back-up plan.
Banned NFL Hopeful Plans to Join WWE
The 23-year-old has already expressed interest in following in his family’s footsteps and pursuing a career in the WWE later down the line. He and his brother Brandon even signed a WWE Next In Line (NIL) deal in February 2025.
“I want to pursue football as long as I can, play as long as I can, but once I’m done, I’ll get into wrestling, too,” Rechsteiner said of his future plans via WDSU-TV’s Sharief Ishaq.
Pro Football Talk has reported that news of his suspension ‘could mean the end of his NFL journey’ and his wrestling career may now become a reality a lot sooner than he had planned.
If he were to join WWE, Rechsteiner would be following in the footsteps of some very successful family members. His father is a WWE Hall of Famer, performing alongside Brock’s uncle, Rick, as the Steiner Brothers.
His cousin Bron is also enjoying a strong WWE career. He currently reigns as one half of the World Tag Team Champions alongside his Vision stablemate Austin Theory.

Manchester City have rejected a bid of around €45 million for midfielder Rodri from Barcelona, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.
GIVEMESPORT understands that Manchester City want in the region of €75 million in order to sanction an exit for Rodri, who has been a target for both Barcelona and Real Madrid this summer.
Real Madrid have now withdrawn from negotiations due to the fact that Rodri wants to join Barcelona before the end of the window.
Barcelona have already agreed personal terms with Rodri, and it’s now just about the two clubs coming to an agreement in terms of a transfer fee.
The La Liga giants are set to make a new offer and remain optimistic of being able to secure his signature this summer.
Coventry City have seen a bid rejected by Sheffield United for midfielder Gustavo Hamer in the summer transfer window, GIVEMESPORT understands.
Coventry City are looking to prepare a squad capable of avoiding relegation from the Premier League following their promotion last season.
Frank Lampard’s side have been active in the summer transfer market so far, confirming four permanent additions since the beginning of the window.
Carl Rushworth – Goalkeeper
Aurele Amenda – Defender
Loum Tchaouna – Winger
Frank Onyeka – Midfielder
Coventry remain in the market for new additions, which is no surprise given the upcoming task for the Midlands side.
Lampard’s men will take confidence in the fact that two of the promoted sides from last season managed to remain in the Premier League, so they’ll be more than up for the task.
Coventry see Hamer bid rejected
Coventry City have seen a bid rejected by Sheffield United for Gustavo Hamer, GIVEMESPORT understands.
GMS understands a new offer is expected and that the clubs are not far apart in valuation.
Hamer has been with the Blades since 2023, joining the club from Coventry. A return could be on the cards if Lampard’s side are able to get to Sheffield United’s valuation.
Hamer spent three seasons at Coventry in the Championship, but made the move to Sheffield United after they were promoted to the Premier League.
