OSOGBO — Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to order the arrest and prosecution of Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, over an alleged threat to kill members of the Accord Party.

A video circulating on social media purportedly showed Fadahunsi addressing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) protesting alleged killings of party members in Ilesa.

In the video, the senator was allegedly heard urging APC supporters to attack members of the Accord Party wherever they were found.

However, while addressing journalists at the Government House Banquet Hall in Osogbo on Tuesday, Adeleke raised concerns over what he described as security operations targeting Accord Party leaders and supporters ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The governor alleged that the viral video showed Fadahunsi calling for the killing of Accord Party leaders, supporters and their family members.

According to Adeleke, the senator allegedly said that where Accord Party leaders could not be found, their wives and children should be targeted.

Adeleke said he had brought the matter to the attention of the Inspector-General of Police and demanded an immediate investigation and arrest of the senator.

He added that Disu had confirmed the existence of the video and assured him that action would be taken.

“This is now beyond politics. This is now a national security threat that requires the attention of Mr President through the Office of the National Security Adviser,” Adeleke said.

The governor also called on the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate Fadahunsi over what he described as alleged incitement to violence against the people of Ijesaland and Osun State.

Adeleke further demanded an end to what he described as “illegal operations” by the Intelligence Response Team, alleging that its operatives had been arresting Accord Party leaders across local government areas without justification.

He urged the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies to uphold due process and ensure fair policing before, during and after Saturday’s governorship election.

“We demand that the IGP enforce due process and fair policing by aborting all anti-people plots against democracy in Osun State.

“We finally request that the police and other security agencies should act in line with the rule of law and their oath of office before, during and after these coming elections,” he said.

Governor Adeleke raised the alarm on Tuesday during an emergency press briefing organised to report on developments on the state’s political landscape.

The governor said the alleged remarks had gone beyond political contestation and should be treated as a national security matter requiring the attention of President Bola Tinubu through the Office of the National Security Adviser.

“This is now beyond politics. This is now a national security threat. I have demanded the immediate investigation and arrest of the senator.”

He called on the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services to investigate the allegation against Fadahunsi, while urging security agencies to stop what he described as unlawful operations against Accord members and ensure that all actions before, during and after the election comply with the rule of law.

Governor Adeleke also alleged that a police directive has been issued for the immediate arrest of leaders of the Accord Party in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The governor said credible reports indicated that a police signal had arrived in Osun directing the immediate arrest of Accord Party leaders, with instructions for them to be taken to Abuja and detained until Monday.

According to Adeleke, “I have spoken with the Inspector-General of Police over the reported directive and urged him to clarify whether such an order had been issued.

“I am appealing to him that this development, if true, is illegal, and presents Nigeria as a lawless country.”

He alleged that arresting Accord leaders on the eve of the election could undermine the electoral process, urging the police to publicly assure Nigerians that no such directive had been issued.

Adeleke also claimed that more than 62 Accord leaders were currently being held in police custody without charges, describing the situation as unacceptable.

“It is disturbing that we still have over 62 Accord leaders held in illegal police detention without any charges against them. This is not democracy,” he said.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that The Imole Campaign Council, TICC, had called for the arrest and prosecution of Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi over an alleged threat to kill members and supporters of the Accord in Ijeshaland, Osun State.

The campaign council made the demand in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its Chairman, Media and Publicity, Bamidele Salam.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that tolerating unverified academic credentials among public officials could erode societal standards and undermine the nation’s future.

In a tweet on his X handle on Tuesday, Obi stressed that the issue goes beyond any individual and should be viewed as a matter of accountability, integrity, and the values being passed on to future generations.

According to him, Nigerians must resist the temptation to overlook questionable, missing, or unverified credentials simply because they involve political allies or preferred leaders.

Obi argued that the process through which individuals attain positions of responsibility is just as important as their performance in office, noting that leadership must be built on transparency and adherence to established standards.

He said that “normalising the abandonment of basic credential verification could create a dangerous precedent, where unqualified individuals occupy critical professional and public offices”.

The former Anambra State governor warned that such a trend could ultimately weaken institutions and diminish public trust in professions that require rigorous training and certification.

Obi further stated that Nigeria must not sacrifice its future for short-term political interests, insisting that truth, accountability, and due process should apply equally to all citizens regardless of status or political affiliation.

He urged Nigerians to defend principles over sentiments and place the country’s long-term development above political expediency.

Obi maintained that achieving a better Nigeria would require citizens and leaders alike to uphold the right values, even when doing so is difficult or inconvenient.
