Following on from an historic and record-breaking weekend within the athletics world, where Josh Kerr set a new world record for the fastest mile ever recorded, there has been some controversy and discussion about the impact on the athletes that camera angles and slow-motion captures have.

During televised athletic events such as the Diamond League and the World Athletics Championships, the audience experience is enhanced through the use of advanced technology throughout the live broadcast, such as varying camera angles and graphics.

However, the use of differing camera shots and slow-motion captures has sparked complaints from athletes and debate throughout the athletic scene.

Holly Bradshaw Speaks Out About Camera Changes

Holly Bradshaw, pole vaulter and member of Team GB, has said that there have been occasions where camera angles are broadcast when they are ‘zoomed in’, while also showing super slow-motion action replays of athletes in ‘undignified positions’, instead of technical or educational shots.

“There are so many different angles to be shown of our sport that can highlight how technical and impressive these field events and athletes are,” she said.

Bradshaw also went on to reveal that she had received online backlash due to the online broadcasts of the athletes.

The former Olympian also suggested numerous camera angles and content focuses, such as showing the last six steps, stride speed, and position of take-off in the pole vault, that could be applied by broadcasters of the athletics to improve not only the viewing experience for a fan but also support athletes, especially female competitors, to feel more safe and protected while competing to the highest standard.

Meanwhile, Serbian long jump competitor and four-time Olympian Ivana Spanovic supported Bradshaw in her plea for broadcasters and producers to protect athletics, as she added that lingering camera angles can cause ‘serious long-term effects on athletes’ mental health.’

Spanovic further explained that: “Certain camera angles, combined with gender stereotypes, not only caused discomfort for athletes and unnecessary distractions during competition.”

Now, with multiple high-level athletes breaking the silence and speaking out against certain camera angles and shots of the competitors during events, surely it’s time for World Athletics and all other athletic associations alongside broadcasters to make a change and provide more protection and comfort for their athletes.

Triple H is a 14-time world champion in WWE with a 30-year career in wrestling from 1992 until his retirement in 2022 due to health problems.

He was widely commended for his work as a villain in his career, and in 2011, the Pro Wrestling Torch claimed that he was ‘widely regarded as the best wrestler in North America by 2000.’

He was ranked seventh on a list of the 20 greatest WWE wrestlers of all time by Sports Illustrated, with eight of his WrestleMania matches considered among the best matches in ‘Mania history, including his match-ups with The Undertaker, John Cena, Randy Orton, and Shawn Michaels.

While still wrestling, Triple H was appointed executive vice-president of talent, live events, and creative, allowing him to work on the storylines for wrestling matches with WWE’s creative team. This earned him criticism for allegedly abusing his influence and having himself featured in high-profile matches or having match or feud finishes changed in his favour.

Following his marriage to Stephanie McMahon, the daughter of the former WWE CEO Vince McMahon, the wrestler was accused of using his relationship with the McMahon family to monopolise the spotlight and steal the attention from newer talent.

WWE Locker Room Not Happy With Triple H

But now, Triple H is finding himself at odds with the current crop of WWE Superstars in his role as chief content officer, which he was appointed to in 2022. The position involves overseeing the company’s creative writing, talent relations, live events, talent development, and creative services department.

It is in talent relations where his troubles lie, and he’s finding himself under fire.

In the last four months, there have been major departures from WWE, with established names such as Kairi Sane, Aleister Black, The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods), and Sheamus bidding the promotion farewell, with the latter leaving when his contract expires.

This has sparked unease and discontent backstage. According to an exclusive report by Sportskeeda, the 56-year-old is not a popular figure with his decisions being called into question. The report alleged that there was a constant state of unhappiness among the WWE talent, who expressed their displeasure with Triple H and President Nick Khan, who they believed were calling the shots.

“There’s an unfortunate constant state of unhappiness among some stars backstage right now,” the report from Sportskeeda said.

The exits of Kingston, Woods, and Sheamus negatively impacted the morale within the locker room due to their popularity, and people have claimed that despite a wrestler being popular, management could decide it’s time for them to move aside.

“There is a feeling where everyone is asking who’s next,” the report continued. “They also think that stars not being as hot as they were at one time is an issue with the creative.

“One wrestler said that someone could try their best to get over, but they’d get cooled down by WWE if they didn’t want them over, and then they’d be let go. Kit Wilson’s name has been brought up backstage as his push has been entirely cooled with this Danhausen story surrounding him, even though Danhausen and he and everyone around it is enjoying it at the moment.”

Triple H has not had the opportunity to defend himself, with The Game preparing for SummerSlam in Minnesota, which will take place between the 1st and 2nd of August. It remains to be seen whether he’ll try to downplay the speculation or simply ignore it, but fans are sure to be watching his actions more closely from now on.

After a fantastic tournament, the World Cup final did not quite deliver the same level of spectacular action. A single Ferran Torres goal in extra-time was enough to see Spain beat Argentina 1-0.

That’s not to say there weren’t plenty of talking points from the game. There has been a great deal of criticism for the way the Argentine’s approach the match, as they posed more threat to the Spanish players’ well-being than to Unai Simon’s goal.

Enzo Fernandez was sent off for two yellow cards, while Leandro Paredes could face punishment after scrapping with Eric Garcia and Gavi after the full-time whistle. Beyond those moments, Lionel Scaloni’s men put up little fight in a footballing sense, and that makes the half-time comments of Emiliano Martinez rather interesting in hindsight.

The scores were level at the break, but Argentina had yet to register a single shot on goal. At the other end, goalkeeper Martinez had been forced to make some key saves.

As per Goal, the Argentine shot-stopper was clearly unhappy with his teammates at half-time as he tried to fire them up. He even went as far as to suggest they were ‘cowards’ if they didn’t look to be more progressive with their passing:

The report notes that captain Lionel Messi then added: “Come on, boys, character, everyone, character. We’ve always had it, aren’t we going to show it now? Come on, hey. Character to play, let’s play our football, let’s play, come on.”

Martinez’s comments didn’t appear to help much as Spain continued to dominate proceedings, with Argentina becoming the first team to go 90 minutes in a World Cup final without mustering a shot on goal. Their first efforts would finally come in extra-time, but they couldn’t find the back of the net, with Torres’s 106th-minute strike winning the game for Spain instead.

It’s interesting that Martinez felt the need to try and lift his teammates with a passionate speech during the break, as footage has emerged before the game where many players looked unusually subdued. In the tunnel ahead of kick-off, Messi was heard saying:

“Let’s stay calm, boys. Forget about everything else. Forget about everything. Let’s just think about playing, that’s all.”

His comments sparked theories about an unseen incident in the dressing room, although it has since emerged that the players may have simply been left emotional after their captain revealed it would likely be his final game for Argentina. Messi has yet to confirm his international retirement, but it does seem likely at this point.
