Everton are reportedly looking to hand David Moyes more firepower by swooping for Norwich City striker Josh Sargent and a January move could be on the cards.
The Toffees have been keeping an eye on Sargent for “a number of months” and were keen on signing two centre-forwards in the summer, per everton.news. Thierno Barry was the Merseyside outfit’s only arrival in this regard, and he’s still adjusting to life in the Premier League.
Moyes has turned to Beto as his main number nine at the start of the season, but he’s managed just one goal in five league outings. A reliable number nine is seemingly the top priority at the Hill Dickinson Stadium amid a promising start to the campaign.
Everton Targeting Josh Sargent
Everton have scored six goals in their opening five games and evidently feel a new proven goalscorer is needed. This was the case even before the summer, when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was still at the club but struggling for goals.
Graeme Bailey told the source above that the Toffees are “concerned” about having a striker-light squad and feel Barry needs more time to adapt. He talked up their interest in Sargent, branding the Norwich man a “tremendous player” who has improved since dropping down to the EFL Championship in 2022.
The 25-year-old has 26 Premier League games under his belt but has truly caught the eye with his exploits in the second tier. The American is currently the joint top scorer in the Championship with five goals in six games and “could move in January”.
Moyes has a superb track record of developing potent number nines, including Wayne Rooney, and will relish working with the 29-cap USA international, who has previously been dubbed “unstoppable”. The Scottish coach admitted he was frustrated with Beto during pre-season, and the 27-year-old certainly hasn’t been the goalscorer his boss needs at the start of the season.
