There are many top individual awards that are handed out every season. Naturally, the most talked about are the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA Best awards, symbolising the greatest player on the planet. However, there are other incredibly important honours to receive too, such as the Yashin and the Kopa Trophy for the best goalkeeper and young player.
The most eye-catching, though, has to be the Puskas Award, given to the player who has scored the best goal over the previous 12 months. After all, goals are the reason why we watch football in the first place. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Alejandro Garnacho have all won the award in the past, and these are the current frontrunners to become the 2025 recipient.

Maghnes Akliouche

One of the most talented players in European football, Maghnes Aliouche underlined his soaring potential with a superb bicycle kick against Rennes earlier this year. A clipped cross from inside the box on the right-hand side came in, and Akliouche adjusted his body to acrobatically volley home over his head using his left foot. What perhaps made this goal even greater, is the Monaco starlet let the ball come over his shoulder before then attempting the bicycle.

Omar Marmoush
Manchester City 3-1 Bournemouth
A supreme goal from a player who after arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt, has taken to English football like a duck to water. After picking up the ball from midfield, Omar Marmoush drove forward and then struck a vicious strike from long-range that flew in off the post. For someone who had been playing his game in a way that used his incredible feed, Marmoush’s effort came out of the blue and showed just how good his ball-striking really is.

Declan Rice
Arsenal 3-0 Real Madrid
In terms of a more iconic goal in the year of 2025, you would be hard pressed to find one better than Declan Rice’s stunning free-kick in Arsenal’s famous victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League. While his first free-kick was good to say the least and a potential contender in and of itself, it was his second strike where he whipped it into the top corner that caught the eye. To do it against a goalkeeper the calibre of Thibaut Courtois made the free-kick even more special.

Luka Modric
Real Madrid 2-0 Girona
When you think of the game’s great midfielders of the modern era, Luka Modric is right up there with the very best of them. And, in a game against Girona in his final season with Real Madrid, the Croatian delivered one of the best possible parting gifts he could possibly have given. A bouncing ball from just outside the box was half-volleyed by Modric into the back of the net, and it captured everything great about the former Tottenham midfielder. Technique and skill of the highest level.

Lyndon Dykes
Birmingham City 2-1 Lincoln City
Kicking things off with Scotland international, Lyndon Dykes, who scored what was voted as the goal of the FA Cup third round with this cracking effort. The Birmingham City man showed incredible skill to bring a long ball down on his chest, before flicking it over the oncoming defender. Then, from 20 yards out, the striker produced a delicate volley that looped over the goalkeeper to send his side through to the next round.
While it is a wonderful piece of magic from Dykes, he finds himself at the bottom of the power rankings purely because his effort didn’t nestle in the corner like some others did. No taking away from the unbelievable technique, though.

Harry Wilson
Fulham 2-1 Brentford
Keeping things in English football with our only entry from the Premier League, courtesy of Fulham’s Harry Wilson. There have been previous winners of this award who managed to score a backheel volley, so that may give the Welshman more confidence that he could come out on top.
His delicious flick over Mark Flekken was not only a beautiful finish but was incredibly important in the context of the game, as it was a 92nd-minute equaliser. The former Liverpool youngster would then go on to score the winner five minutes later to give his side all three points against London rivals Brentford.

Ovella Ochieng
KCB 2-4 AFC Leopards
A free-kick so good you simply have to see it for yourself. The Puskas Award rewards those players who might not be playing in the most high-profile of leagues, and in Ovella Ochieng, he delivered his worthy contender in a game for AFC Leopards in the Kenyan Premier League against KCB. His free-kick was taken from just outside his own half, and he struck it so powerfully that it flew all the way into the back of the net in stunning fashion.

Josh Windass
Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 Derby County
Great goals just run in the Windass family. After all, Josh’s dad, Dean, produced one of the best finishes in play-off final history. Not to be undermined, the junior made sure to prove he was just as capable with this unbelievable effort.
There have been a plethora of stunning goals from the halfway line, with David Beckham’s and Wayne Rooney’s immediately springing to mind. Windass gives them both a run for their money, though, as he looks up, spots the goalkeeper off his line, and drills an audacious attempt into the back of the net from beyond the centre circle as he helped Sheffield Wednesday to a 4-2 victory over Derby County.

Toral Bayramov
Bodo/Glimt 1-2 Qarabag
What a way to open your European account for the season. Toral Bayramov is not someone who scores too many goals. In fact, the Qarabag man has scored just one other in his Europa League history. He certainly made sure that this strike lives long in the memory, though.
A loose pass from the Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper allows the 24-year-old to run up to the ball and control it on his chest. With his second touch, he unleashes an outrageous volley that flies into the back of the net in what is the definition of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, caught with such venom.

Angel Di Maria
Benfica 7-0 Estrela Amadora
One of the greatest wingers of the modern era, Angel Di Maria is still proving he has the goods even in the twilight of his career. Back at Benfica, where his journey into European football started, the Argentine rolled back the years with a wonderful bicycle kick in a 7-0 thrashing of Estrela Amadora.
As you can imagine, there were several acrobatic efforts in contention that missed out on this list, and those who have managed to jump above the former Champions League winner are either slightly more spectacular for one reason or another, or have more importance in the context of the game.

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is officially available to return to professional football after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld his appeal against his ban for doping.
Mudryk, who signed for Chelsea in 2023 for an initial fee of £62m, has not played a competitive match since November 2024, following a provisional suspension by the FA. Subsequent tests delivered an “adverse finding” for the banned substance meldonium.
The Ukraine international was hit with a significant ban of four years by the FA, but lodged an appeal to CAS against the punishment. The longstanding governing body agreed to allow the 25-year-old to return to professional football “with immediate effect.” Mudryk conceded that he had broken anti-doping rules, agreeing to a suspension that equalled the time he had already served.
Mudryk has shared his gratitude at returning to football, stating that the ban led to the “most difficult period” of his career.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk star added: “As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance.”
Chelsea has already commented on the positive verdict regarding the Ukrainian winger, stating that the club looks forward to returning Mudryk to “full fitness, [and reintegrating him] back into the squad and back on to the pitch.” The 25-year-old is expected to join their pre-season tour.
FA Update on Mykhailo Mudryk
The English FA shared the following statement on their website in relation to Mudryk’s four-year ban being lifted:
“The FA can confirm that the anti-doping disciplinary proceedings against Mykhailo Mudryk were resolved with the agreement of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on 30 July 2026. In the context of that agreement, Mr Mudryk has accepted his commission of Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) and accepted a period of ineligibility.
“On 22 October 2024, Mr Mudryk was subject to an out-of-competition doping control, which revealed the presence of a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited substance. The FA notified Mr Mudryk of that finding on 4 December 2024 and imposed a provisional suspension. On 23 May 2025, the FA charged Mr Mudryk with ADRVs in breach of Regulations 3 and 4 of its 2024 Anti-Doping Regulations.
“On 7 to 9 January 2026, a hearing took place before an independent Regulatory Commission. The Regulatory Commission found that Mr Mudryk had committed the charged ADRVs and imposed a four-year period of ineligibility. Subsequently, Mr Mudryk filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
“Since then, changes have been made to WADA Technical Document (TD2027MRL) which, while not retroactive, mean that if Mr Mudryk’s sample was collected today, the concentration of meldonium in the sample would not have been reported and no ADRVs would have resulted.
“Further to that development and to other circumstances of the case, The FA and Mr Mudryk have now – with the agreement of WADA – resolved the appeal proceedings in accordance with Article 10.8.2 of the World Anti-Doping Code and Regulation 90 of the 2024 Anti-Doping Regulations. As a part of the agreement, Mr Mudryk accepted that he had committed the ADRVs charged and acceded to a period of ineligibility equal to the time served at the date of the agreement.
“Mr Mudryk is no longer ineligible and may return to competition with immediate effect.”

You’ll Never Walk Alone
Liverpool fans will be more than familiar with this iconic anthem. Written by peerless duo Rodgers and Hammerstein for the 1945 musical Carousel, the track found new fame through Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1963. After becoming the soundtrack to many Anfield games, Celtic fans adopted the song in the 1960s. Like Liverpool, Celtic supporters tend to belt the tune out on European nights to gee up their boys in green and white.

Set to the Depeche Mode synth-pop classic, this chant has been a Celtic staple since 2010. Easily memorable and fun to sing along to, this song is one that brings the energy to Parkhead. It’s hard not to get swept up in the euphoria.

The Celtic Song (Hail Hail/Grand Old Team)
Hoops fans will know this track well, as it rings around Parkhead as the players run onto the pitch. The song itself is an interesting blend of past melodies. Mix a century-old American military marching song and Glen Daly’s “The Celtic Song”, and supporters have a recipe for a rousing stadium chant.

Celtic Symphony (Graffiti on the Wall)
This Brian Warfield concoction was commissioned to celebrate Celtic’s centenary season in 1988. The lyrics weave an intriguing allegory, pitting a Glasgow sailor against the devil on a grand, global voyage. But as predicted, the antidote to the temptations of the world: the terraces of Celtic Park.

The 67 Song
Short, sharp, a moment frozen in time and memory. Celtic’s finest hour: May 25, 1967. Celtic overcame Inter Milan in balmy Lisbon to become Britain’s first ever European Cup winners. Dubbed the “Lisbon Lions”, incredibly, the entire starting 11 was born within 30 miles of Glasgow.

The Broony
Born during a heated 2011 Scottish Cup match against Rangers, the song is a dedication to cult figure and former captain, Scott Brown. The captain’s iconic celebration in the face of villainous Rangers forward El Hadji Diouf remains an immortal chapter in Old Firm folklore. “The Broony” isn’t just a Celtic chant; it’s a defiant taunt to their Glasgow rivals.

Over and Over
