Southampton’s search for a new manager has taken a fresh twist following an update on interim boss Tonda Eckert. The under-21 boss was named as the Saints’ boss on a short-term basis following the decision to sack Will Still as head coach.
Still was appointed as boss over the summer but lasted just 13 games before being dismissed as a result of a disastrous start to the season, leading to Eckert’s introduction to the first team.
Taking charge of two matches, Eckert left the club’s hierarchy stunned by addressing the team’s poor form by winning back-to-back Championship games against Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday – the two games he’s led since taking charge.
While Southampton have been heavily linked with established names like Gary O’Neil for the job, it seems like a change of tact could be on the cards.
Tonda Eckert ‘In With A Shout’ Of Southampton Job
Eckert’s wonderful start as Southampton’s interim boss has resulted in claims that he could be set to take the job on a full-time basis. TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook initially claimed that the Saints were “expected to give him the job on a permanent basis.”
However, that report has been countered. Taking to X, Radio Solent’s Sports Editor Adam Blackmore said: “Just as I was about to share my understanding of the latest Southampton manager situation, someone started saying Eckert has got the job (“expected” is a good guess). I don’t think that’s true as things stand — what I do think is that after 2 wins he has a shout, but more likely that could depend on the next 3 game-batch after the international break, for which he could well be in interim charge.
“Saints have spoken to candidates, but they can afford to be patient with Eckert’s good start, and it allows them time to see the market develop.
“Eckert was always Johannes Spors’ succession policy after Will. It just wasn’t supposed to be after months! So it’s highly unlikely anything imminent occurs either way …..like I said about Will, it would be a risky appointment giving it to Eckert …but if he wins 5 out of 5? Hard not to!”
