11 Ex-Chelsea Players You Maybe Didn’t Know Were Still Playing
Chelsea are one of – if not the – most successful football club in London. Arsenal give them a run for their money but their success on the European stage, something the Gunners cannot claim, perhaps puts them just ahead on the scale of subjectivity. Alas, the Stamford Bridge outfit have boasted some of the most exciting, and memorable, players of the Premier League era.
Think Eden Hazard, John Terry and Didier Drogba as prime examples. But it’s not always been sunshine and rainbows for players on their books, with a handful never managing to break into first-team proceedings.
10 Greatest Chelsea Players Ever (Ranked)
From Eden Hazard to Frank Lampard, the 10 greatest players in the history of Chelsea Football Club – ranked in order
You’ve also got the cult heroes of the footballing world and those that have just disappeared off the face of the earth once they left the west of the capital for pastures new. Former prospect Gael Kakuta springs to mind – and the Lille-born forward is among the ex-Chelsea stars that you maybe didn’t know were still playing the beautiful game.
Goalkeeper and Defence
Starting in between the sticks, we’ve got Asmir Begovic. Known for being one of the tallest players to ever ply their trade in the Premier League at 199cm tall, the Bosnian was largely a back-up during his time in the west of the capital, typically playing second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois. He kept 10 clean sheets in his 33 outings, but two of his more notable stints came at Stoke City and Bournemouth. He’s now at Leicester City.
Albeit a winger while on the books of Chelsea, Juan Cuadrado has spent much of his following spells deployed at right-back – so that’s where we’ve stuck him. In his two years at the club, he played a mere 15 times, and it wasn’t long before he was sent out on loan to Juventus, who eventually secured his services permanently in 2017.
He’s spent the remaining years of his career in Italy, though, with the likes of Inter Milan and Atalanta. At the time of writing, he’s on the books of Pisa – who compete in Serie A. On the opposite side of the defence is Patrick van Aanholt, who is synonymous to most Premier League fans for his stint at Crystal Palace.
The stocky Dutchman, now 35, played just a handful (eight, to be precise) matches for the Blues and even managed to win the Premier League with them in 2009/10. Now back in his homeland, Van Aanholt – a 19-cap Netherlands international – has featured for Sparta Rotterdam since November 2024. He’s made over 30 appearances for De Kasteelheren.
In the heart of the defence is Kurt Zouma, who is now playing for Romanian outfit CFR Cluj, and the unforgettable David Luiz, who is still playing at the age of 38. The seasoned Brazilian defender played just short of 250 times for Chelsea, and he’s now competing in the Champions League with Cypriot side Pafos FC.

Tipped for big things in the early embers of his career, Oxford-born Josh McEachran was fondly admired by none other than Real Madrid back in the day but turned down Los Blancos to continue his development at his boyhood club. It, ultimately, didn’t work out for him at one of England’s biggest sides, as he made just 11 appearances in five years.
It’s a terrible shame really, given how mooted he was in his teenage years, and he’s now playing for Bristol Rovers after spells with the likes of Brentford (during their Championship years), MK Dons and Oxford United. Danny Drinkwater is another who was unable to reach the heights expected of them at Stamford Bridge.
Signed one season after winning the title with Leicester City in 2015/16, Drinkwater canned his chance to impress on the big stage. Now, the central midfielder is rubbing shoulders with the likes of Joleon Lescott, George Boyd, Papiss Cisse and Emile Heskey in the most ridiculous Sunday League side ever created.
‘I Won the Premier League, Retired Early And Now Work on a Construction Site at 34’
Drinkwater has been mocked for his new profession – but he doesn’t care one bit.
A Chelsea cult hero of sorts, Juan Mata excited the Stamford Bridge attendees on a bi-weekly basis while at the club between 2011 and 2014. In that time, the fleet-footed ace – widely regarded as one of the best Spaniards in the history of the Premier League – played 135 times and plundered 86 goal contributions.
No longer able to produce magic like he used to, the 2010 World Cup winner moved to Manchester United in 2014 and stayed eight years before becoming something of a globetrotter. He joined Galatasaray in Turkey, then moved to Vissel Kobe in Japan. Now, he’s in Australia playing for Melbourne Victory.

On his day, there were not enough superlatives to describe the talent Willian had to offer. Fast, unpredictable and a brilliant set-piece taker, the Brazilian was named by Fikayo Tomori as one of the best Chelsea players he played alongside – and it’s easy to see why. A two-time Premier League winner with the Blues, he is now back in his homeland of Brazil.
Since leaving west London, Willian has turned out for the likes of Arsenal (the less said about that stint, the better), Corinthians, Fulham and Olympiacos. Now, he dons the strip of Gremio and has been since the summer after being left without a club.
Fabio Borini shocked many people when it was announced that he was returning to England to play for Gary Neville-backed Salford City, who are currently competing in the fourth tier of the English football pyramid. The Italian burst onto the scene as a young and excited forward in the capital, but he netted just three strikes in 38 appearances.
Wowing a player as gifted as Eden Hazard is no mean feat, but welcome to the world of Gael Kakuta. ”I’m gonna give you one name and John knows the player. The only one I was saying “wow” was Gael Kakuta,” the Chelsea legend said on the Obi One podcast. ”You asked me talent. Kakuta, by, far number one. Talent. I mean, talent. Wow.”
So, what happened? The 28-cap DR Congo international, now 34 years of age and entering the final years of his journeyman career, is plying his trade in Turkey for Sakaryaspor after a fleeting spell in India for Esteghlal FC. He moved back to Europe in February 2025 and has played 24 matches since in an attacking midfield role. He played just 16 times for the Blues.

Ronaldo Nazario Named The 8 Greatest Players in Football History
Who is the greatest player of all time? It’s a question that has been asked for many, many years. The answer tends to be either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, with the two superstars winning 13 Ballons d’Or between them. They have dominated football for an entire generation. Before them, though, there were Pele and Diego Maradona. The two South Americans dominated the sport during their era and are still in the GOAT conversation despite the emergence of Messi and Ronaldo.
While everyone has an opinion on the best players in the world, the opinions of those who have reached the pinnacle of football just hold a little bit more weight. That’s why it’s so interesting to hear from Ronaldo Nazario – the Brazilian Ronaldo – who named eight players who he thinks are in a ‘very special’ group among the greatest players of all time during an interview with The Guardian in 2022. And he didn’t include Cristiano in that.
While there can be no arguments over the players included, there are some notable absentees on Ronaldo’s list. How can he possibly exclude the Portuguese talisman? The likes of Michel Platini, Alfredo Di Stefano, Zinedine Zidane, George Best and Ferenc Puskas will all feel hard done by not being mentioned. But who are we to argue with the opinion of someone who has played at the very highest level and is one of the greatest strikers to have lived? So, let’s take a look at the eight players he did include – and why they deserve to be in the GOAT debate.
Diego Maradona
Argentina – Attacking midfielder
Diego Maradona is widely regarded as one of the greatest to have played the game. The Argentine played in four World Cups and led his nation to victory in 1986. His greatest achievement at club level was at Napoli, who he inspired to their first-ever Serie A title in 1986/87.
They won their second a few years later. If you’re to walk around Naples, you will see Maradona merchandise and graffiti down almost every street. He’s remembered as a god in the city and for every reason. He was a larger-than-life character who was capable of producing magic with the ball at his feet. Remember that goal against England? Incredible.

Lionel Messi
Argentina – Forward
From one Argentine legend to another. While Maradona may be considered one of the best, Messi might just be the best. The Inter Miami man has won everything he could possibly get his hands on and his 2022 World Cup triumph may well have secured his GOAT status. There are too many records and accolades to speak about but 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona goes some way to explaining his brilliance.
20 Greatest Barcelona Players in History [Ranked]
Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Diego Maradona and Ronaldo Nazario all feature among Barcelona’s greatest ever players.
But Messi simply isn’t about goals. Yes, he may go down as the greatest goalscorer of all time, but he’ll also go down as the greatest playmaker, the greatest dribbler and surely the greatest player of all time. No one has won the Ballon d’Or more than his incredible tally of eight.

Johan Cruyff
Netherlands – Attacking midfielder
He may not be considered the very best, but Johan Cruyff is surely the most influential and revolutionary footballer ever. The Dutchman won three Ballons d’Or in 1971, 1973, and 1974, establishing himself as an Ajax and Barcelona legend. He’s also responsible for inventing the ‘Cruyff’ turn – a skill that is still widely used in modern football as a way to skillfully beat defenders.
Creating your own move is enough to earn a legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time, and it wasn’t just on the pitch where he thrived. His managing career wasn’t bad either for both of those clubs, becoming one of the best managers of all time, too.

Franz Beckenbauer
Germany – Defender
The greatest defender of all time? Well, Ronaldo appears to think so, with Beckenbauer being the only defensive-minded player to feature in his list of seven. But the German is fully deserving of his place. Beckenbauer is credited with inventing the ‘modern sweeper’ role and is one of just nine players to have won the FIFA World Cup, the European Champions Cup and the Ballon d’Or.

William Saliba does not make the cut, yet.
He played almost 600 times for Bayern Munich, winning everything there was to win. Never before had there been a force at the back quite as dominant as Beckenbauer, and he truly was the peak version of what a defender could be.

Pele
Brazil – Forward
As Ronaldo said, you “can’t compare generations.” And he’s right. How good was Pele? There aren’t too many people alive who can say they watched Pele in his prime and remember just how good he was. We don’t even know how many goals he scored.
The figures are often disputed but FIFA state the Brazilian scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games. What we do know is that he won three World Cups for Brazil and is a Santos legend. His impact on the game was absolutely tremendous and, considering the level of players that he inspired and influenced in the years since, it’s hard to deny just how important he’s been to football.

Marco van Basten
Netherlands – Forward
Marco van Basten is regarded as one of the best strikers ever – and that’s despite playing his final match at the age of 28 following an ankle injury. He won the Ballon d’Or on three occasions – 1988, 1989 and 1992. He also won three Eredivisie titles and the Cup Winners’ Cup with Ajax, and four Serie A titles and three European Cups with AC Milan.
It wasn’t just at club level where he thrived, though. For the Netherlands, he scored 24 goals and helped them win Euro 1988 in a tournament where he scored five goals – including that volley against the Soviet Union in the final. Just imagine how much more we could have gotten if he hadn’t been forced to retire so early.

Ronaldinho
Brazil – Winger
Ronaldinho is rarely mentioned in the GOAT debate, but there can be no denying how uniquely brilliant the Brazilian was. At his peak, he was the best in the world, winning the Ballon d’Or in 2005. It was simply a joy to watch Ronaldinho during those 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons at Barcelona.
Smiling his way through world-class performances and match-winning moments. One of the most skilful players in history. He would do things with a football that we’d never seen before and while his peak wasn’t quite as long as some of the other players on this list, it was certainly one of the most impressive for what we got.

Ronaldo Nazario
Brazil – Forward
Ronaldo picked himself as one of the eight greatest players of all time. And, you know what? We don’t blame him. We’re going to defend Ronaldo for his ego trip because he was one of the greatest strikers ever. He was the first real superstar in football with those Nike Mercurial Vapors and blistering pace, Ronaldo was almost impossible to stop. That was until those devastating knee injuries threatened to derail his career.
At 20, Ronaldo had the world at his feet following a move from PSV to Barcelona for a world record fee. He was named FIFA World Player of the Year. A year later, he broke the transfer record again when Inter signed him, and he became the youngest recipient of the Ballon d’Or when he claimed it at 21. 59 goals in 99 appearances for Inter Milan earned him a move to Real Madrid, where a further 104 goals were scored. He finished his career at AC Milan and Corinthians before injuries finally took their toll. But what a player.

Liverpool Now Want Tottenham Star Luka Vuskovic
Liverpool are looking to improve their options in the backline this summer, with Caught Offside tipping them to make a move for a Tottenham star who has been a long-term target.
Andoni Iraola is braced for a change or two in the backline, as Ibrahima Konate’s exit leaves a potential void at centre-back to deal with for the future.
While Jeremy Jacquet’s arrival and Giovanni Leoni’s return from injury come as potential boosts to those ranks, there are wider long-term concerns over the position.
The only two experienced stars at centre-back, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, are both into the final year of their contracts at Anfield and could leave for free next summer.
As doubts continue to rise over their place at Liverpool, the club continue to be linked with potential long-term signings to help stagger the options in the backline.
Liverpool Want Luka Vuskovic
According to a report from Caught Offside, Liverpool are in the race to sign Luka Vuskovic this summer, as the Tottenham star continues to be linked with a potential exit.
The 19-year-old defender has asked to leave Spurs this summer, with the arrival of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi seemingly closing off a potential pathway to senior football in N17.
Brighton have been pushing to sign Vuskovic, who is seemingly unhappy with his current situation, with two bids currently rejected to land the defender.
While the Seagulls appear to be pushing hard, Liverpool’s interest relayed in the report suggests that the Merseyside club are keen on landing another long-term addition.
The Reds aren’t alone in that interest, as Manchester United also appear to be monitoring a move for a player who has been tipped to become a superstar in years to come.
It remains to be seen if either club will put up a concrete offer for Vuskovic, with his future likely to be decided after his World Cup campaign with Croatia.

Liverpool’s Centre-Back Concerns
It’s clear that Liverpool face a future centre-back problem, but it’s one that may require another transfer window to address, rather than looking at it this summer.
Signing another centre-back now, when other areas of the squad desperately need addressing, may leave Andoni Iraola short of options who can make an impact elsewhere.
Perfect for Iraola: Liverpool Prepare First Bid For ‘Highly-Rated’ Star
Liverpool are showing interest in signing a new defender this summer, with a bid now prepared for a target.
Vuskovic, for example, isn’t going to come cheap. He would also be a relatively inexperienced option alongside the likes of Jacquet and Leoni, meaning the Reds would likely look at the market again next summer for options anyway,
A player entering their peak may be required to give some immediate quality alongside the young stars, but that may only come about if the likes of Van Dijk and Gomez leave.

Bruno Fernandes Makes Final Man Utd Summer Exit Decision
Manchester United are set to keep hold of club captain Bruno Fernandes this summer, according to TalkSPORT, amid doubts over his future at Old Trafford.
It comes after an impressive individual season for the playmaker, who broke the Premier League assist record with 21 in a single season, overtaking Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in the process.
It was his displays that helped push Man United towards a Champions League return, as the team finished third in the division and ensured they were back among the elite for next season.
However, after Fernandes faced doubts over his future last summer, similar questions have arisen this year about a potential transfer exit, as clubs loom large in the background for a possible deal.
Now, it seems as though the star player has made his decision.
Bruno Fernandes To Stay At Man United
According to a report from TalkSPORT, Bruno Fernandes has been telling his Man United teammates that he intends to stay at the club this summer.
The 31-year-old is yet to hold any formal talks with the higher-ups at Old Trafford, but there is no indication that they will push for an exit either.
Fernandes has a contract that runs until 2027, but it also features a one-year extension clause in it that can be triggered before he becomes a free agent next summer.
Man Utd Join Race to Sign Attacking Midfield ‘Sensation’ Alongside Premier League Rivals
Manchester United are looking towards the future, and have a wonderkid in their sights this summer.
There is also a £56 million release clause in his deal for non-English clubs, which could draw interest from Saudi Arabia after last year’s pursuit.
The attacking midfielder also previously admitted that he would be open to joining a club in Serie A or La Liga at some point before he retires, but it appears unlikely that will happen this summer.
It comes as a major boost, not least for Michael Carrick, as the report adds that he is keen to keep Fernandes within the squad for next season.

Fernandes Contract Decision
Once the dust settles on this summer’s transfer business, Man United may want to consider a new deal for Fernandes to secure his long-term future at the club.
At 31, he is still proving that he is capable of some top performances and has all the quality to drag the Red Devils through some important moments.
While the club tries to rebuild back towards the top again, repaying the faith in the Portuguese international would show just how key he has been to the team, and could allow them to build around him.
Man Utd Join Race to Sign Attacking Midfield ‘Sensation’ Alongside Premier League Rivals
Manchester United are looking towards the future, and have a wonderkid in their sights this summer.
There is, of course, some risk to that. Potentially high wages for a player nearing the latter end of their career will make some uncomfortable with another contract extension.
But it is worth considering keeping an important player at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
