Carragher Claims Rogers Can Lead Aston Villa To Shock League Title

Published

on

Jamie Carragher thinks Aston Villa’s title hopes rest on one player following their 3-2 comeback win over West Ham United which means they remain just three points behind leaders Arsenal.

Unai Emery downplayed Villa’s chances of competing for the title last week despite watching his side beat the Gunners 2-1 at Villa Park. The Spaniard praised the performance, which ended the North London giants’ 18-game unbeaten run.

West Ham threatened to derail the Villa train when they took the lead twice at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon. But Morgan Rogers came to the fore as he has done since overcoming a slow start to the season and it’s the English attacker whom Carragher feels will be vital if Emery’s team are to pull off a stunning title win.

Carragher: ‘Special’ Rogers Could Win Villa The Title

Morgan Rogers

Manchester City have Erling Haaland, Arsenal have Declan Rice and Aston Villa have Rogers, according to Carragher, who made clear that any chance of the title heading to Villa Park depends on the English attacking ace. He was at the double yesterday, coming up with two excellent goals to bring his tally for the season to five goals and as many assists in 23 games across competitions.

Carragher gave a glowing verdict of the 23-year-old while speaking on Sky Sports:

“Morgan Rogers is something special. He just seemed to be one of those players who come from sort of nowhere. They signed him from Middlesbrough for not a huge fee, and he’s gone on to not just be one of the best young players in the Premier League, which he was last season; he’s now looking like one of the best players in the Premier League.”

Rogers won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in August after a stunning 2024-25 campaign which saw him flourish both domestically and in Europe. He registered 14 goals and 16 assists in 54 games in all competitions and that included four goals and three assists in 12 of Villa’s Champions League campaign.

It’s been a remarkably quick turnaround for the Halesowen-born attacking midfielder after his frustrating form at the start of the season stirred up speculation over his future. Darren Bent even suggested that he had wanted to make a move in the summer and as a result he was downing tools.

But that’s evidently not been the case as he’s been back to his best and Carragher reckons he could be the difference maker if Villa are to put up a title challenge:

“And that could be key if Aston Villa do feel that they could go on and contest the league title or actually go on and win it.”

Rogers joined Villa from Middlesbrough in early 2024 for just £8 million, a bargain given his exploits with the West Midlands outfit. He’s not only playing a crucial role in Emery’s side but also winning Thomas Tuchel over ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup.

Rogers vs Bellingham For England’s Number 10 Role

Rogers vs Bellingham

It seems a given that Rogers will be on the plane to North America with the England squad come next summer amid stellar showings for club and country. He made his international debut under caretaker manager Lee Carsley in a 3-0 win against Greece in November 2024.

Tuchel has ensured the City academy graduate remains a mainstay in his Three Lions senior team and that has even meant keeping Jude Bellingham out of the team. His first goal for his country came in a 3-0 friendly win against Wales in October and it feels as though the German coach is a real fan of his.

Carragher opined that Bellingham is currently the favourite to start as England’s number 10 at the World Cup. But the Liverpool legend suggested that if Rogers keeps up such performances as the one against West Ham, he could well displace the Real Madrid star:

“He’s competing with arguably our best player right now, Jude Bellingham. Jude Bellingham played the last game, and I think in most people’s eyes, and certainly mine, that once we get to the World Cup, Jude Bellingham will be playing in that position.”

He added:

“But the more I watch him play, I actually think Thomas Tuchel thinks like this, this is not an easy decision that Bellingham comes back in, this is a real fight for Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers to see who is going to play in that number 10 position behind Harry Kane at the World Cup. And if he keeps playing like that, it’s certainly not a given.”

Bellingham was one of England’s talismen at Euro 2024 and has made the number 10 position his own in recent years. The 22-year-old starred for Madrid in his debut campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu, but a back injury has been problematic over the past year.

The race is on between the pair to try and claim the starting role behind Kane once the World Cup arrives. Tuchel could look to trial both players in friendlies against Uruguay and Japan in March.

Kylian Mbappe Wearing Special Shirt Only 3 Players Have

Kylian Mbappe is lighting up the 2026 World Cup as he looks to fire France to their second success in world football’s biggest competition since 2018.

The Real Madrid forward is firmly in the Golden Boot race against the likes of Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior, having found the net four times in the group stages. Mbappe was crucial to his nation lifting the trophy in 2018, bursting onto the scene as a teenager.

He then had an incredible tournament four years later in Qatar. Despite his side having to settle for second place, the 27-year-old fired in a hat-trick in the final, something only Sir Geoff Hurst has previously managed.

That treble in the final against Argentina helped Mbappe to the Golden Boot in the 2022 World Cup. The versatile forward netted eight times in total, and was undeserving of being on the losing side.

He tends to step up on the big stage when his country needs him. Some eagle-eyed fans may have spotted a difference in the shirt Mbappe is wearing this summer compared to the rest of Didier Deschamps’ men.

2026 World Cup Golden Boot: 17 Top Goalscorers Predicted By AI

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane are all expected to finish among the top goalscorers in this summer’s tournament.

The reason for that is his Golden Boot victory in 2022. Any active player who has won the individual award at the World Cup is allowed to wear a special patch on the sleeve of their shirt.

England’s Harry Kane and Colombia’s James Rodriguez are the only other players at the tournament this summer allowed to wear the patch, after winning the 2018 and 2014 Golden Boots, respectively.

The award has never been won back-to-back in the competition’s history. But with France being among the strong favourites and expected to go far, there’s every chance their talisman can scoop the honour once again. After all, he’s only four goals away from being the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer.

Mbappe: Lionel Messi Still the Best

While Mbappe is hunting his old Paris Saint-Germain teammate Lionel Messi down in the current Golden Boot race and the all-time scoring charts, he still concedes he has a lot to do to overtake the Argentine.

It was no surprise to Les Bleus’ number nine that Messi has continued to deliver on the big stage. He said (per ESPN): “I already knew Messi was going to keep scoring goals. He always does. He’s ahead of me and I’m behind him. I’ll keep scoring to help my national team go as far as possible.”

What Miroslav Klose Said About Lionel Messi Breaking His World Cup Goalscoring Record

Messi smashed Klose’s tally on Monday evening…

Following the greatest footballer of all time smashed a hat-trick against Algeria, Mbappe declared him still the best in the world. He claimed:

“It’s clear that Messi is the best in the world, and so is Cristiano [Ronaldo]. For 16 years, he [Messi] has shown his extraordinary talent. I’m just trying to do what I know how to do: show my talent on the biggest stage possible and help my national team.”

Newcastle Now Want Felix Nmecha

Newcastle United have lined up a deal to sign a midfielder this summer, as the Magpies face the possibility of losing some key players in the coming weeks.

The Magpies are under pressure to keep their best stars, with Sandro Tonali being heavily linked with a move to the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, and Arsenal.

The Italian international isn’t the only possible exit, as Bruno Guimaraes has also been linked with a transfer elsewhere, as Arsenal have made an offer to sign the Brazilian.

A deal for the former seems the most likely, meaning Newcastle are on the market for replacements, and one target is now seemingly in the club’s sights.

Newcastle Add Felix Nmecha To Shortlist

According to a report from journalist Craig Hope, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha is on Newcastle’s shortlist as a transfer target for this summer.

The Magpies are described as “long-term admirers” of the 25-year-old, who has impressed in the Bundesliga as well as in the World Cup with Germany in recent weeks.

Nmecha has a release clause in his deal worth £73.5 million, though that doesn’t come into effect until next summer. That said, the report claims that there is hope a move can be negotiated for lower than that price.

There is likely to be some competition for Nmecha’s signature, as Manchester United have been linked with a transfer, along with fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle can get an agreement with both Dortmund and the Germany international over a potential transfer in the coming weeks as a result.

But it could prove to be a coup for the side, with Nmecha described as the “most underrated midfielder in Europe” for good reason.

Newcastle’s Key Transfer Decisions

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe looks on glumly

Newcastle are facing a tough summer transfer window, with Anthony Gordon’s exit set to be just the first of a few key moves away from the club.

Given the struggles in the Premier League last season, the Magpies will be keen to not be in a weaker position next campaign when it comes to the options available.

However, it may be the sales that help ensure that is the case. Selling some important players in favour of huge transfer fees could allow it to be reinvested in a way that will add a better balance of quality across the whole squad.

Newcastle Make New Transfer Plan as £69m Star Set To Leave

Newcastle United are in the market for a striker, as one star looks set to leave the club this summer.

That, in theory, should allow the team to become stronger. But that will only happen if the right transfer replacements are found for the right price.

That was the theory in practice last summer, with Alexander Isak’s sale generating a club-record fee, but resulting in the wrong options being signed to take his place.

Newcastle cannot allow a repeat of that, especially in the midfield engine room, which has been among the key areas of strength under Howe.
