Arsenal Should Be Worried by Martin Odegaard’s Struggles vs Kairat

Published

on

Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Kazakhstani minnows Kairat Almaty didn’t help allay fears that the Gunners might not see this season out with a trophy. For many, it also highlighted an issue that Mikel Arteta has regarding the form of one of his most important players.

Viktor Gyokeres put his side in front with a much-needed second-minute goal, but Portuguese forward Jorginho equalised from the spot for the visitors five minutes later. Normal service was resumed when Kai Havertz got on the scoresheet in the 15th minute and Gabriel Martinelli poked home a third in the 36th minute.

Kairat managed to grab a late consolation goal through Ricardinho in the 90+4th minute. But Arsenal claimed all three points to finish top of the Champions League table and with a perfect record.

There was nothing perfect about Martin Odegaard’s second-half cameo appearance, and the Norwegian failed to impress. His usual ball-playing brilliance was missing, and he failed to find a teammate with any of his three crosses.

Odegaard came on at half-time and replaced Havertz, who impressed in midfield and managed to get on the scoresheet. His side looked less of a threat once he entered the fray and failed to add to their lead.

He has endured injury issues in recent years, and there are concerns that he isn’t the same player who lit up the Premier League during his early years at the Emirates. He has appeared 24 times across competitions, managing one goal and five assists.

The 27-year-old is meant to be the Gunners’ leader, but he hasn’t been at his best this season, and that included in the 3-2 loss to Manchester United last weekend. His struggles haven’t gone unnoticed by fans who vented their frustrations with his performance against Kairat.

One fan thinks there are problems with Arteta’s skipper: “Even against Kairat? Naaah Odegaard’s got some SERIOUS issues.”

Another was disappointed with his display: “Odegaard came on at halftime and did absolutely nothing.”

One suggested he had a negative impact after coming on at half-time: “We actually looked worse when Odegaard came on.”

Another went as far as to advise the North Londoners to sell their captain: “It pains me to say but I think we should Sell Odegaard come in the summer. We need to upgrade him.”

One wrote: “Odegaard came on and it went stale, please stay on the bench.”

Another supporter’s verdict was that the Norwegian shouldn’t start against Leeds United: “I genuinely think the entire fanbase will turn on Arteta if he starts Odegaard against Leeds on Saturday. We lose that game. No inspirational speech talk at the press conference will save him. He’s done.”

This was echoed by a fellow fan: “Odegaard need to be drop on the bench.”

One added: “As soon as Odegaard came on, Arsenal’s attack became a masterclass in doing absolutely nothing — endless safe passes, meaningless dribbles, and zero creativity. Completely harmless. Just hope Do not give him one minute any more!”

Odegaard has been a mainstay in Arteta’s side ever since he arrived at the club and remained an undisputed starter despite Eberechi Eze’s arrival last summer. But there are signs that some of the Emirates faithful have run out of patience with their skipper.

Do Arsenal Need a New Captain?

When Arteta handed the captain’s armband to Odegaard, he explained that the former Real Madrid man is a quiet leader who commands his teammates’ respect. But every time the going gets tough for Arsenal, he doesn’t exude a leadership demeanor, and this could be a major issue for the Gunners and their hopes of a successful season.

Odegaard’s captaincy was questioned by club legend Tony Adams back in August 2024 and their former captain urged Arteta to change skipper (via Indo Sport):

“I’m just saying he’s got an opportunity this year to actually turn into a winner. To win league titles, you have to be a Klopp, you have to be a Ferguson. You have to lead by example, you have to be a winner, you have to go about your business. And that reflects in your captain.

He added:

“And I’m seeing Declan Rice as a captain but I’m saying to Arteta: ‘Come on, step up now. It’s your time to be a winning manager and a fantastic manager, because you’re not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain.”

Declan Rice previously captained West Ham United before arriving at Arsenal in the summer of 2023. The English midfielder is a passionate character who is often seen galvanizing his teammates but also keeping them in check.

Liverpool Join Race to Sign Bradley Barcola

Published

Liverpool announced Andoni Iraola as their new manager on Thursday night, and now the club look like they are ready to ambitiously back the Spaniard in the summer transfer market.

Liverpool have handed the former Bournemouth boss a two-year contract, with the 43-year-old tasked with making an improvement on a disappointing 2025-26 season.

The Reds ended the Premier League season in fifth position and one place above Iraola’s Cherries, but it was enough to once again qualify for the Champions League.

Most disappointing, along with the fact they conceded the most goals they ever have in a Premier League season, was that they ended the campaign 25 points adrift of champions Arsenal as they looked to defend their title, after a major summer spend in the transfer market.

There might be another significant investment coming too, especially with the summer exits of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate already confirmed.

Replacing the former is going to be one of the main priorities for Liverpool chiefs this summer, with strong links with RB Leipzig Yan Diomande in recent weeks.

The Ivory Coast international isn’t the only winger the Reds are looking at though.

Athletic journalist David Ornstein confirmed on Thursday that Liverpool have made contact with Leipzig as their pursuit of Diomande steps up ahead of the World Cup kicking off on June 11.

The Reds are said to be in the strongest position on player side, with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain also keen on the exciting 19-year-old.

According to Fabrizio Romano, also posting on X on Thursday, Liverpool are also part of a three-team battle to sign PSG attacker Bradley Barcola.

The Italian journalist says that ‘movements are expected’ around the Frenchman, with Arsenal and another unnamed club also keen on the 23-year-old.

Barcola Is Much Better Than Diomande

Diomande is clearly a huge talent with a massive future ahead of him, after starring for Leipzig this term.

The teenager contributed 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga side, but the fact is that he has only made 46 senior appearances in his short career to date.

Meanwhile, Barcola is a two-time Champions League winner and three-time Ligue 1 winner with PSG, with the left-sided player making 200 senior appearances in his career.

More than 150 of those have come with the Ligue 1 champions, with 39 goals and 37 assists in that time.

Como first-team scout Ben Mattinson has certainly been full of praise for the France international, describing him as being ‘one of the best wingers in the world’.

Leipzig are ready to demand £112m for their teenage sensation, so it will be interesting to see if the Reds have a chance of landing a more established player in Barcola for a lower fee.

Published

An update has now emerged on Manchester United’s interest in Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall from journalist Luke Edwards.

Hall has emerged as one of the most exciting young left-backs in Europe over the last couple of years, but he struggled to nail down a starting place in Eddie Howe’s side towards the end of last season.

GIVEMESPORT sources recently confirmed that Hall is considering his future with the Magpies after being left devastated by his omission from the England World Cup squad.

It’s understood that Manchester United are one of the sides showing an interest in signing Hall as he aims to impress Thomas Tuchel for the future.

Hall was playing behind Dan Burn for Newcastle in the final weeks of the season, and Tuchel ended up calling up the latter for the World Cup.

Update: Man Utd Interest in Lewis Hall

Reliable journalist Edwards has provided an update on Manchester United’s reported interest in Newcastle defender Hall.

Edwards claims that Newcastle have not had any contact from the Red Devils and have not been informed that the player wants to leave.

As it stands, Manchester United have clearly not held club-to-club talks, which is no surprise as they undoubtedly have other priorities.

There’s no doubt Hall will be frustrated with his situation at the moment, in terms of club and country. He’ll at least be hoping for a guaranteed start next season.

Newcastle Could Struggle to Keep Hall

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall celebrating

Newcastle might find it difficult to keep Hall at the club heading into the summer transfer window, especially if a club like Manchester United are in the race.

The Magpies endured a difficult 2025-2026 season, meaning they won’t be playing European football next campaign.

The Red Devils will be able to offer Hall Champions League football and a club heading in the right direction under Michael Carrick.

Newcastle took a huge step back last season, and it’s no surprise that Hall is disappointed with his situation after failing to make the England squad.

At one point, it looked like Hall would be a guarantee to start at left back for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Tottenham in Talks to Sign Free Agent Striker Dusan Vlahovic

Published

Tottenham are preparing for one of their most crucial summer transfer windows in their recent history after being involved in a relegation battle during the 2025-2026 season.

It’s the first window under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, and the hierarchy will likely be looking to back him in the market.

The Italian manager certainly did a good enough job in his first few months in charge to warrant the club backing him.

There’s an argument to suggest that Spurs need reinforcements all over the pitch in the summer, especially as there’s likely to be players that will want to leave the club.

So far this summer, Tottenham are already closing in on the double signing of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, who both look set to arrive on free transfers, GIVEMESPORT understands.

According to a report from TeamTalk, Tottenham are one of the sides to have held talks with the camp of Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Serbian forward looks set to leave Juventus this summer when his contract expires, and it’s claimed that he would prefer a move to a European side despite interest from Saudi Arabia.

A host of Premier League clubs have also spoken to Vlahovic’s camp. Many are likely to see him as one of the bargains of the summer due to his free agent status.

An announcement on Wednesday confirmed that Vlahovic would not be signing a new contract at Juve, and he’s now free to join another club this summer.

Vlahovic’s Wage Could be an Issue

Although Vlahovic is going to be available on a free transfer during the summer transfer window, Tottenham are still likely to have to pay him a significant wage package.

Reports have claimed that Vlahovic is demanding in the region of £266,000 a week, which is certainly a lot for a club like Tottenham.

Vlahovic, described as being one of the best strikers in the world by teammate Khephren Thuram, hasn’t been at his best in the last few years.

There’s no doubt Vlahovic would improve Tottenham’s striker options, but they have to weigh up whether it makes sense from a financial perspective as well as a football one.
