Donald Trump has given his honest thoughts on whether Iran should participate in the 2026 World Cup. The US President’s response was strong amid the ongoing conflict involving both countries.
The United States of America and Israel launched an attack on Iran over the weekend, with the Middle Eastern nation then striking back with bombings in several countries. The USA, along with Canada and Mexico, will host the biggest international competition this summer.
Iran’s participation was already under question as they appeared on Trump’s travel ban list and initially claimed they’d boycott the World Cup draw in December 2025. However, that’s now been taken to a new level of doubt following the recent strikes.
Donald Trump on Iran’s Potential World Cup Appearance
Trump was directly asked by Politico what he thinks about the prospect of the Iranian national team taking part at the showpiece event in June. The President, however, didn’t want to entertain that discussion and shut down the question. He labelled Iran a ‘defeated country’ as he brutally replied:
“I really don’t care. I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes.”
2026 World Cup Boycott: 7 Nations Made Their Feelings Clear Amid Donald Trump Controversy
Donald Trump’s actions have threatened to cause major disruption to this summer’s World Cups as major nations mull over a boycott.
It comes after the head of Iran’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, cast doubts over the country’s place in the competition. He told Iranian TV at the weekend that it’s ‘far from our expectations that we can look at the World Cup with hope’. Taj added that the nation’s sports officials would take the final decision over a potential boycott.
USA Give Statement on Iran’s World Cup Place
Trump isn’t the only one to give his honest verdict in the last 24 hours, either. US Soccer CEO JT Batson gave an alternative assessment of the ongoing situation.
He told Sky News that the US would be ‘very supportive’ of a safe and secure World Cup for all travelling nations. Batson suggested that America would treat Iran’s matches just as they have any other bout between the two countries. He said (per The Sun):
“FIFA president Gianni Infantino shared over the weekend the intention of a safe and secure World Cup where all teams are participating. And we’re certainly very supportive of that.
“We played Iran a number of times in the World Cup and just like any other team of the 47 other teams we could play in the World Cup, our goal would be to win. And so we look forward to doing just that.”
