Oscar Piastri was denied the chance to compete at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix after crashing out prior to the race even getting underway.
Australian drivers notoriously have a terrible record in their home race and that ‘curse’ continued at Melbourne Park on Sunday. The 24-year-old McLaren driver had been slated to start fifth on the grid, but wasn’t able to take part after crashing into a wall and destroying his car on the pre-race reconnaissance lap.
Piastri lost control on the exit kerb at Turn 4, slamming into the wall and completely destroying the right-hand side of his car. With just 40 minutes to go until the green flag, his chances of participating in the race were ended instantly. Oscar was forced to leave his car where it was and walked away dejectedly.
The home crowd fell silent when they realised that they wouldn’t be seeing their hero in action.
McLaren boss Zak Brown admitted he didn’t know what caused the crash, but vowed to investigate after the race.
“We’ve not seen anything on the data so far. He didn’t say anything on the radio. So we’ll do a post-mortem after the race and see what happened,” Brown said.
“For now, we’ve got to focus on the car we have in the race and get the excitement level back up because that’s definitely disappointing for Oscar at his home race. But let’s see what happens now.
“I’m sure he [Piastri] will be sore about that one for a while. But these race car drivers know how to recover quickly. So definitely not the way you want to get started.”
