UFC president Dana White has shut down rumours that a superfight between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria was planned for the promotion’s upcoming White House event.
The UFC is preparing for one of the most unique cards in its history, with a landmark show scheduled to take place on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., on the 14th of June as part of celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.
In the build-up to the event announcement, speculation began circulating that a blockbuster fight between lightweight champion Makhachev and former featherweight title-holder Topuria had originally been planned before falling through. However, White has now dismissed those claims entirely.
Speaking about the rumours, the UFC boss insisted the fight was never on the table in the first place.
Dana White on Islam Makhachev vs Ilia Topuria Claims
“That’s not true,” White said when asked about reports suggesting the bout had been scrapped. “It was never Islam versus Topuria. Don’t worry about what fights are being made. We announced which ones are made and which ones will be happening.”
White then went on to discuss what happened with the fight that fell through last minute, without actually revealing who the fighters were involved.
“I told you there were some weird circumstances [surrounding the late pullout]. The reason that fight fell out, and it wasn’t up on stage with Mick [Maynard], Hunter [Campbell], and Sean [Shelby], it was at Power Slap that the fight fell apart that night and all the boys went back to the office and were there until literally 9 in the morning and that’s how Gaethje ended up on the card.
“Topuria wasn’t originally supposed to be on the card either. So he got the call, too.”
That late change to the card and the fight that fell through ultimately led to Topuria being matched up with Justin Gaethje in what is expected to be one of the biggest fights of the year.
The pair are now set to headline the historic White House card in a lightweight title unification clash, with two of the division’s most explosive strikers scheduled to meet in the Octagon.
Islam Makhachev Currently Injured & Never Considered For UFC White House
While some reports suggested Makhachev had withdrawn from a potential bout with Topuria, White made it clear the Russian star was never booked for the event.
He then revealed that Makhachev is currently dealing with a recurring hand injury and is also observing Ramadan, factors that could delay his return to the Octagon.
“He’s got some hand issues,” White said of Makhachev. “I know that. I don’t know how serious the hand issues are or how long that will keep him out, but he’s injured.”
As a result, the promotion instead moved forward with Topuria vs Gaethje as the headline bout for the historic card. Regardless of the rumours surrounding the original plans, the UFC will still make history when the Octagon is set up outside the White House for the first time.
And with Topuria and Gaethje set to collide in the main event, the promotion’s landmark event is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about nights in UFC history.
