15 Most Successful English Clubs in Football History by Major Trophies Won
Summary
- Liverpool have won 47 major trophies in their illustrious history, including six Champions League titles.
- Manchester United have won 44 trophies since their creation, with the majority coming under Sir Alex Ferguson.
- Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Aston Villa are also among the most successful English clubs.
Football is about winning. Not everyone can win, but that’s always the aim at the beginning of a campaign and some teams have proven to be better at collecting silverware than others when all’s said and done.
English football is full of prestigious and historical teams that have long histories of picking up the biggest honours on offer. To establish what counts as a major trophy, however, there needs to be rules put into place. Squawka have ranked the English clubs with the most major trophies in the history of the sport. However, not every competition counts towards this total.
Within these rankings, seven competitions are recognised as major trophies: First Division/Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, European Cup/Champions League, UEFA Cup/Europa League, Cup Winners’ Cup and Europa Conference League.
Competitions including the Community Shield, Intercontinental Cup and FIFA Club World Cup are not regarded as major trophies. So, without further ado, view the 15 English clubs with the most major honours in football history below.

Liverpool
Trophies: 47
Liverpool are the English club with the most major trophies won in football history, three ahead of their fierce rivals following their Premier League triumph in the 2024/25. Jurgen Klopp is the man to have guided Liverpool to the top of this list as the German has won the Premier League, Champions League and both domestic cup competitions during his glittering tenure at Anfield, and Arne Slot added the cherry on top with the club’s latest league triumph.
Most Successful Clubs in World Football – Trophies and Honours
There are many highly decorated clubs in world football and the 24 sides to have amassed the most trophies have been listed.
Liverpool were a dominant force in both England and Europe historically, particularly between the 1970s and 1980s. It was during the Premier League era that the trophies began to dry up for the Merseyside outfit, although a treble in 2001 – comprised of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup – has helped them to solidify their place at the top. Having since won the Premier League twice, the Anfield outfit now have the joint-most (20) English top-flight league trophy wins.

Manchester United
Trophies: 44
Manchester United fans will be forever grateful for the vast amount of success brought to the club by Sir Alex Ferguson after the ex-Aberdeen boss dominated the Premier League with the Red Devils. Each of the 13 Premier League titles the club have lifted were under the Scot.
They were already a huge club before their historic manager took over, having won the English top flight seven times before the inception of the Premier League in 1992. United have had less European success than Liverpool, winning three Champions League titles and a Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017. The most recent cup success came in an FA Cup final triumph against fierce rivals Manchester City to round off the 2023/24 campaign.

Arsenal
Trophies: 30
It’s been two decades since Arsenal last lifted the biggest trophy in English football. That triumph was perhaps the most impressive success the division has ever seen as Arsene Wenger’s side filled with stars – such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Robert Pires – won the league title without tasting defeat in a single game.

Liverpool’s recent loss to Fulham brought an end to one of the longest unbeaten runs in Premier League history
The Invincibles were the last Gunners side to win the Premier League, but the north London club have boosted their tally to 30 with numerous FA Cup successes since. The last decade has seen Arsenal lift the FA Cup five times, with the most recent being Mikel Arteta’s first piece of silverware under current boss, Mikel Arteta.

Manchester City
Trophies: 28
Manchester City were crowned Champions League winners for the first time in their history in June 2023 after they defeated Inter Milan in Istanbul. Rodri scored the only goal of the game as Pep Guardiola’s side won 1-0. City also won the Premier League and FA Cup in the 2022/23 season as they completed a historic treble.
The Citizens have now moved above Chelsea and into fourth when it comes to English clubs with the most major trophies in football history. They are now just two major trophies behind Arsenal in third after beating the Gunners in the 2025-26 Carabao Cup final at Wembley. But they have a long way to go to catch Manchester United and Liverpool. The reigning champions have lifted the Premier League eight times, and their dominance looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.

Chelsea
Trophies: 26
Chelsea had only enjoyed moderate success before Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich took over the club in July 2003. A First Division title and a few domestic cup successes were still impressive to have in the trophy cabinet, but Jose Mourinho’s appointment in 2004 was the real turning point in the Blues’ success.
The Portuguese manager was the first boss given an eye-watering transfer budget at Stamford Bridge – a theme that would continue until the present day – and he had instant success with back-to-back Premier League titles in his first two seasons in west London. Since then, they have won the trophy a further two times, as well as two Champions League triumphs and a host of cup successes. Their 26th and most-recent major trophy (not including the FIFA Club World Cup) was the Europa Conference League, which they sealed in May 2025 thanks to a 4-1 win over Real Betis in the final.
The Blues subsequently became the first-ever club to secure all four of UEFA’s major trophies: the Champions League, Europa League, Cup Winners’ Cup and Europa Conference League.

Aston Villa
Trophies: 20
Aston Villa are comfortably in sixth, ahead of Tottenham and Everton. Not many of these 20 major accolades have come in the club’s recent history, although Unai Emery looks like he could be the man to bring success back to Villa Park in the near future.
Some modern fans may be unaware that the Villans lifted the European Cup back in 1982. This puts them level in continental success with Manchester City and one trophy ahead of Arsenal in this respect. Villa are a giant club with a long history, which includes seven First Division trophies, with the last coming in 1981.

Tottenham Hotspur
Trophies: 18
Tottenham are often mocked by rival fans due to their lack of recent success. But they were finally able to silence their critics and end their 17-year trophy drought in 2025 when they beat Premier League rivals Man United to win the Europa League. Brennan Johnson’s only goal of the game proved the difference as Spurs clinched their 18th major trophy in their existence.
While their lack of trophies in the last two decades may be a source of frustration for fans, it also shows just how successful the club were prior to 2008, as Spurs are still comfortably in the top 10. The bulk of the 18 trophies won by Tottenham are represented by their eight FA Cup triumphs.

Everton
Trophies 15
Speaking of trophy droughts, Everton haven’t won anything since 1995. The Merseyside club lifted the FA Cup at the end of the 1994/95 campaign, but haven’t really come close to adding to their haul of 15 on too many occasions since. A defeat in the final of the same competition against Chelsea in 2009 is the closest the Toffees have come, and even that was in 2009.
However, Everton were a force to be reckoned with in the first few decades of the 20th century, and then again in the 1980s. The club have nine First Division titles to their name, as well as five FA Cups. They may not have won a European Cup in their best days, but there was a Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.

Newcastle
Trophies: 11
A win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March 2025 ended a seven-decade-long wait for a major trophy for Newcastle United and saw them climb into ninth place on the all-time list. The victory marked the first time that the Magpies had lifted the League Cup, but they added it alongside the 10 other major trophies that they’ve won over the years.

GIVEMESPORT takes a look at the teams with the most FA Cup trophy wins in history.
With Eddie Howe in charge and a squad with the likes of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, there’s a chance that Newcastle will add even more trophies to their cabinet in the future. It’s certainly hard to imagine they’ll have to wait another 70 years to lift their 12th piece of silverware.

Blackburn
Trophies: 10
Blackburn Rovers fans have had to deal with life in the second tier of English football for over a decade now, but they still remain one of the most successful clubs in the country in terms of major honours.
Rovers were the first team not named Manchester United to win the Premier League trophy, doing so in 1994/95. That was a joyous occasion for the club with Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton scoring goals for fun, but it would also be the beginning of the downward spiral. The only other piece of silverware since was the League Cup in 2002. The other eight major accolades came in the 19th century and the early part of the 20th.

Why Arsenal Will Not Lift Premier League Trophy During Bus Parade
Details have emerged about the upcoming Arsenal bus parade to celebrate their Premier League title. Interestingly enough, it has been confirmed that the club will not lift the trophy during their nine-kilometre celebration route.
The Gunners were able to put to bed 22 years of hurt as they finally lifted the Premier League on Sunday. Their success was confirmed after Manchester City drew against Bournemouth earlier that week, making a trip to Crystal Palace a formality.
Mikel Arteta’s men were still able to pick up a 2-1 win, to finish the season with 85 points, seven points and one place ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side, but the main focus was on the trophy lift at the end of the game. Martin Odegaard led the celebrations, becoming the first Arsenal captain to hold the trophy aloft since Patrick Vieira in 2004.
However, he will not do the same on the title bus parade.
Arsenal Will Not Lift Premier League Trophy at Emirates
The event is scheduled to happen in north London on 31 May. A club statement has already explained: “We are delighted to announce that we will come together with our supporters and community for a special parade around our home borough of Islington, starting from 2pm on Sunday 31 May, to celebrate our title.”
The Gunners, of course, could have two trophies to celebrate with if all goes to plan. Indeed, the night before, Arsenal will take on Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest as they aim to win the Champions League final for the first time in their history.
Regardless of the result, however, there will be no official trophy lifting moment on the parade route. As explained by the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust, this is due to the huge numbers expected during the celebrations. They said:
“The parade is over 9km long. No trophy lift at the end or at town hall due to expected numbers. Therefore, there is no advantage in crowding into one area and you are advised to spread along the whole route.”
Police Expect at Least 500,000 People to Attend Arsenal Bus Parade
Both Arsenal and local police are expecting at least 500,000 people to show up for the event. For context, there were an estimated 100,000 gathered at the stadium last Tuesday after Man City drew with Bournemouth, confirming the win. Aston Villa had approximately just 50,000 at their parade after winning the Europa League, while the official estimate for the City parade – celebrating Pep Guardiola and the two domestic cups they won this season – was 6,000, plus a further 14,000 in the Co-op Arena later.
It would not be a surprise if figures were actually well over that 500,000 mark either. The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust also revealed that there will be road closures near the Emirates Stadium from 4am Sunday morning, due to the number of attendees at the title parade. Fans are advised not to park anywhere nearby if they want to access their car later on the same day.
They then added that there will be no event at the stadium on the day of the parade. What’s more, the club’s official shop, the Armoury, will also be closed.

Man Utd Eye £100m Aston Villa Forward Morgan Rogers
Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox and manager Michael Carrick both want to sign a Premier League forward in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have been heavily focusing their recruitment on signing a new midfielder in the summer, but there’s no doubt they’ll be looking to strengthen in other positions.
Qualifying for the Champions League was a huge achievement for the club, but it comes with the need to spend significantly in the market.
Not only do United need better players in order to deal with the stronger opposition, they also need a deeper squad.
Signing a versatile forward could be a useful option for them, and it appears multiple members of the team are keen on signing one player.

Manchester United are looking to take advantage of Tottenham’s difficult last few years.
Man Utd Want ‘Superstar’ Forward
According to a fresh report from talkSPORT, Manchester United are interested in signing Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers ahead of the summer transfer window.
Director of Football Wilcox is known to be an admirer of the England international, but he’s not the only one.
A previous report claimed that if Carrick was appointed as the permanent manager of United, their number one target could change to Rogers in the summer window.
With multiple figures at United who are involved in the recruitment strategy in favour of signing Rogers, it will be interesting to see if they make a move.
Rogers Could be Expensive Addition for United
Although Rogers would be a huge signing for United if they can get a deal over the line, it’s certainly not going to be cheap.
The report from TalkSport claims that a bidding war could drive Rogers’ price up to around £100m, which is a huge fee even in the modern era.
Rogers, described as a ‘superstar’, is attracting interest from a host of clubs this summer, so it’s never going to be an easy deal for United to complete.
It will be interesting to see whether the England international does leave Villa in the coming weeks and months, as the £100m asking price could put people off.

Liverpool Open Talks to Sign Yan Diomande
Liverpool are in talks over a deal to sign star forward Yan Diomande this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds had a disappointing campaign in the Premier League and Champions League, finishing fifth in the top flight after conceding a record number of goals and losing 13 games, while they were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Paris Saint-Germain, losing both legs of the tie.
The Anfield club are now planning major upgrades during the summer transfer window as they look to replenish their squad, and talks have begun for their first big signing.
Liverpool Open Talks for Yan Diomande
Diomande, who has been described as ‘lethal’, has been one of the breakout stars of the 2025/26 season with RB Leipzig, registering 13 goals and eight assists in all competitions in his first season with the club.
The 19-year-old has emerged as one of the most sought-after attackers in Europe ahead of the transfer window, and the Bundesliga club have slapped an £87m asking price on his head as a result, while they have also offered the Ivorian a new contract to boost his wages and include a release clause, in order to keep hold of him for another season.
But Liverpool are keen to get a deal done to bring him to Merseyside as they search for long-term replacements for Mohamed Salah, and they have now opened talks with the player’s camp to find an agreement.
Diomande has previously revealed that it is his dream to move to Anfield, having grown up as a Liverpool fan, but the club are also looking at alternative options just in case a deal cannot be done.
Paris Saint-Germain also have a strong interest in Diomande, and have also opened talks over a deal.
Diomande a Legend in the Making
While it may be early in the career of Diomande, he has all the attributes and quality to become a true legend at Anfield.
Liverpool fans love having tricky wingers who can get them off the edge of their seat and provide excitement, and Diomande is someone who can do just that, and more.
The massive transfer fee may prove to be a bit of a hurdle, but the club showed last summer that they are not afraid to splash the cash if they feel it’s the right thing to do. Diomande would be the spark this squad needs, and it could be a huge statement signing this summer.
