Tottenham Scout Sporting CP Star Maxi Araujo vs Arsenal

Published

on

Tottenham had scouts in attendance for the Champions League clash between Sporting CP and Arsenal in Portugal on Tuesday night.

Although the focus for Roberto De Zerbi will be on the pitch for the coming weeks, in the background, the recruitment team will be working on possible reinforcements for the summer transfer window.

De Zerbi’s only priority for now is to keep Tottenham in the Premier League, with Spurs currently sitting just one point above the relegation zone.

It’s unclear how much of an influence the new Tottenham manager, who was appointed last month, will have on recruitment, but his team will be identifying and scouting targets ahead of potential moves.

Dropping down to the Championship will alter their plans in the transfer market, but Spurs will have to plan with the assumption that they remain in the top flight.

According to a report from Sport Witness, Tottenham had scouts in attendance for Arsenal’s trip to Sporting CP in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Spurs scouts were keeping a close eye on Maxi Araujo, who they have already initiated contact with ahead of a possible move in the summer transfer window.

It’s claimed that as many as 12 Premier League clubs were taking a look at Araujo, who is believed to have a £70m release clause, during Uruguay’s game against England during the international break, and it appears interest is continuing in him heading towards the end of the season.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs were impressed with the performance of Araujo in Portugal on Tuesday, where Sporting succumbed to defeat after a late goal from Kai Havertz.

GIVEMESPORT asked ChatGPT how Araujo would fit under De Zerbi at Tottenham, analysing his strengths and weaknesses.

  • Profile: Left-footed LWB/LW hybrid; high duel volume (~13 per 90) + strong recovery/output profile suggests intensity + two-way capacity
  • Strengths: Explosive carrier, overlaps aggressively, consistent box touches (~3.8 per 90); thrives attacking wide channel + cut-backs
  • Strengths (defensive): Active presser (1.6 tackles, 4.6 recoveries p90); fits high-intensity, counter-press structures
  • Versatility: Can play LB/LWB/LM/LW—valuable in fluid positional rotations De Zerbi demands
  • Weaknesses: Limited creative ceiling (low xG/xA, crossing efficiency modest); more runner than playmaker
  • Weaknesses: Decision-making + discipline (high fouls/cards) can disrupt controlled build-up phases
  • De Zerbi fit: Suits vertical width + aggressive rest-defence, but may struggle in intricate build-up/inversion roles
  • Verdict: Strong system piece (rotation/role player), not a primary progression hub in De Zerbi’s structure

What Happened to 7 Young Man Utd Stars Sir Alex Ferguson Predicted in 2001

Published

on

By

Summary

  • Sir Alex Ferguson backed seven young Manchester United players to become legends at the club in 2001.
  • Darren Fletcher and John O’Shea were among the group and did go on to have good careers at Old Trafford.
  • Others, such as Danny Pugh, failed to excel at United but enjoyed good careers elsewhere.

Manchester United have had so many talented youngsters come through their academy in the Premier League era. Many young footballers looking to make a name for themselves were handed their first-team debuts by Sir Alex Ferguson and went on to have successful careers.

David Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes were just three members of United’s famous ‘Class of ’92’, a group of youngsters who graduated through the academy and all cemented themselves in United’s history. In 2001, Ferguson thought another group of youngsters were set to break through and establish themselves in the first-team.

He named seven players that he thought had the capabilities to step up to top level football. The legendary Scotsman said, per the Sun:

“Darren Fletcher, who we hope will get over his broken leg, is good. Michael Stewart and Luke Chadwick are doing very well, and John O’Shea’s doing well too. There’s a young left-back called Paul Tierney who’s doing well, as is Danny Pugh. But there’s a young boy who has started now, he’s 16, called Kieran Richardson. He’s going to be a fantastic player.”

But, unfortunately for the seven figures touted for greatness, not all of them went on to achieve incredible amounts of success at Old Trafford. Here is what happened to each of the players backed by Fergie.

Darren Fletcher

Ferguson was hoping that Fletcher would overcome a broken leg, and he managed to do so. The Scot was just 17 years old at the time and, two years later, he made his debut for United. He went on to play 342 times for the club, scoring on 24 occasions, and helped the Red Devils to five Premier League trophies.

Unfortunately, he was hindered at the back end of his United career due to a prolonged battle with ulcerative colitis. Fletcher overcame the illness and departed United in 2015, turning out for West Brom and Stoke City before hanging up his boots in 2019. After retiring, Fletcher started his managerial career and returned to United to coach their Under 16s and, in January 2021, he was promoted to first-team coach. In March 2021, he became the technical director at Old Trafford, but was replaced by Jason Wilcox in April 2024 – although United said he would continue to be a key figure behind the scenes as a first-team coach.

He was appointed head coach of United’s under 18s in July 2025. His two sons, Jack and Tyler, both play for United and have ade their first-team debuts.

Stewart was handed his debut for the club in a League Cup match against Watford in 2000 and would make eight appearances in the league for United, but never made the grade to feature regularly at Old Trafford. Roy Keane once told him that he would end up playing for a pub team, and he would depart the club in 2005 for Hibernian.

His best spell of his career came at Hearts, where he played 87 times in the league and hit the back of the net on 12 occasions. Stewart had a brief spell in Turkey with Genclerbirligi before ending his career in 2011 after a short stint with Charlton Athletic. The Scotsman also made four appearances for his country, but it’s fair to say he didn’t live up to Fergie’s prediction.

Chadwick broke into United’s first team during the 2000/01 season, playing 22 times as United won the Premier League title. But he failed to kick on and, after only a handful of appearances in the next few years, he departed the club in 2004. He went on to play for numerous clubs in England’s second tier, including West Ham, Stoke City and Norwich City, before dropping down to League One with MK Dons in 2008. Chadwick spent six successful seasons at the club, playing 246 times and scoring 24 goals, while also winning their Player of the Year award twice.

He joined boyhood club Cambridge United in 2013 but left two years later. After leaving Cambridge, Chadwick signed for Isthmian League Division One North side Soham Town Rangers in November 2015 and spent one season there before returning to Cambridge as a full-time coach in the club’s academy.

John O'Shea

One of the best players to come through United’s academy, O’Shea earned himself a reputation as a reliable defender during his successful stint at the club. He played 393 times for the Red Devils and helped them to 14 major titles before departing for Sunderland in 2011.

O’Shea spent six seasons at The Black Cats before ending his career in 2019 after a brief spell with Reading. He represented the Republic of Ireland on 118 occasions, making him the third most capped player in their history. He then joined Reading coaching staff following his retirement from playing, but left the club in July 2021. In April 2020, he was named as assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland U21 team before joining Stoke as first-team coach in 2022.

He returned to Ireland duty when he became assistant manager under manager Stephen Kenny, but then left that role when Wayne Rooney was appointed manager Birmingham City, joining as a first-team coach. Now, he’s back coaching the Republic of Ireland national team, working as an assistant coach under Heimir Hallgrimsson.

Tierney did not hit the heights expected of him by Ferguson. He made just one first team appearance for United before departing in 2005. He did win the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year at the club – awarded to the best academy player of the year – which has been won by the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Marcus Rashford in the past. But Tierney never really managed to establish himself like the aforementioned trio.

He enjoyed brief spells at Livingston and Blackpool and signed for Conference outfit Altrincham in 2008 at the age of 26. But he only stayed there for a month, with Altrincham proving to be the last team he played for in his professional career.

Danny Pugh - Manchester United

Pugh may have never established himself as a regular at United – he made just seven appearances for the first team – but he did go on to have a decent career. Capable of playing in midfield or at left-back, he turned out for the likes of Leeds United and Preston North End, before making 37 Premier League appearances with Stoke City.

Pugh ended his professional career after a spell with Port Vale in 2020 and turned his head to coaching. He has been caretaker manager of the club on two separate occasions, with a combined record of two wins in seven games. After leaving as caretaker manager, Pugh went to play for Hanley Town in Midland League Premier Division, before joining seventh tier side Leek Town as a first-team coach in September 2023.

Ferguson had high hopes for Richardson and, while he had a decent Premier League career, he never established himself as a regular at United. He made his debut for the Red Devils in 2002 and played 81 times for the club, scoring 11 times, before joining Sunderland in a £5.5m move in 2007.

He played 149 times for Sunderland and also featured in the Premier League for Fulham and Aston Villa and in the Championship with Cardiff City. Richardson did manage to break into the England team too, earning eight caps and scoring twice – but it’s hardly what Ferguson predicted he would achieve back in 2001. He would retire from the game at 33, and is now earning a living by trading expensive watches.

Rory McIlroy’s Comments After Making History Angers Some Golf Fans

Published

By

Rory McIlroy has angered some golf fans with his comments after creating history at the 2026 Masters on Friday.

McIlroy went into this year’s competition at Augusta National as the defending champion after beating Justin Rose in a dramatic playoff in 2025.

He enjoyed a fine start to his quest to defend his title, recording a 67 (-5) on Thursday to share the lead with Sam Burns. He followed that up with a 65 (-7) on Thursday as he built a six-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard.

McIlroy is -12 going into the weekend. He now holds the biggest halfway lead in the tournament’s history, and the lowest 36-hole score by a defending champion.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy, considered one of the greatest players in golf history, took some time off in the lead-up to the Masters. The 33-year-old decided not to play in the last three PGA Tour events prior to the Masters, with his last start coming in mid-March at the Players Championship.

Instead of playing on the PGA Tour, he has had plenty of practice at Augusta in recent weeks. He told the media after his second round: “I honestly just don’t like the three tournaments leading up to this event.

“I’d rather come up here… I did a couple of days where I dropped Poppy to school. Then flew up here, played, landed back home and had dinner with her or had dinner with Erica.

“”I did a couple of day trips like that where I felt it was a better use of my time than going to Houston or San Antonio. It wasn’t really about conserving energy, but just I felt the more time I could spend up here, the better.”

McIlroy’s comments haven’t gone down too well among some, though. While Masters champions are granted honorary membership and are allowed to play the course as they choose, some think it’s an unfair advantage.

One fan wrote: “I’m probably in the minority here, but this shouldn’t be allowed. Your only chance to play ANGC should be at the tournament if you’re a professional,” while another said: “Completely not fair.”

Some have also slammed McIlroy for frequently using his private jet in recent weeks, given the harm it does to the environment. “Pretty disgusting fact. Not about golf but about his flying,” one said, while another commented: “Rory ripping his jet around causing more pollution by dinner time than everyone who’s viewed this does in a week.”

Others, meanwhile, have called him out for being disrespectful to the Valspar Championship, Houston Open and Valero Texas Open, the three tournaments he skipped in favour of practicing at Augusta. “Quite disrespectful to the other three tournaments,” one commented. A second said: “Don’t like these comments out of one of the faces of the PGA Tour. Maybe you don’t want to play in Texas because the courses don’t fit your eye but don’t s*** on events and sponsors.”

McIlroy will play alongside Burns for his third round and will tee off at 19:50 BST (14:50 local time) on Saturday.

Tottenham Reach Verbal Agreement to Sign Andy Robertson

Tottenham Hotspur have a verbal agreement in place to sign Liverpool star Andy Robertson this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The north London side are frontrunners to land the Scottish international on a free transfer, with his end-of-season departure from Liverpool already confirmed.

Romano suggests Robertson has earmarked Tottenham as his preferred destination, provided they avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Spurs have dropped into the bottom three for the first time this season after West Ham’s 4-0 win over Wolves on Friday.

Liverpool's Andy Robertson

According to Romano, Tottenham have verbally agreed a move for Robertson ahead of the summer, but the deal will depend on whether they are able to retain their Premier League status.

Robertson, along with star forward Mohamed Salah, will be departing Liverpool at the end of his contract in June and was targeted by Spurs during the winter transfer window.

Liverpool refused to entertain an exit as they were unable to secure a replacement in time, with a move to bring back Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma falling through.

Robertson has been below summer signing Milos Kerkez in Arne Slot’s pecking order for much of the season, making just six Premier League starts and another 13 appearances from the bench.

The ‘elite’ Scotsman joined Liverpool from Hull City in the summer of 2017 and has lifted nine major titles during his stay at Anfield, including the Champions League in the 2018/19 season.

Benjamin Nygren celebrates scoring for Celtic

Amid their ongoing Premier League survival battle, Tottenham are starting to assess potential reinforcements to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad next season.

According to reports, the Lilywhites have registered their interest in Celtic star Benjamin Nygren and are among the clubs closely monitoring the Sweden international.

Spurs consider Nygren a cost-effective addition to the squad and could strike a deal in the region of £26m, with Celtic open to an off-season sale.

Nygren, who joined the Hoops from Danish side Nordsjaelland last summer, has registered 19 goals and eight assists in 50 appearances in all competitions this season.
