ADC crisis: INEC deliberately sabotaging us, court order won’t stand – Umeh

Published

on

The Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has accused the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan of deliberately sabotaging the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Umeh spoke to journalists on Thursday in Awka after a preparatory meeting for the party’s congress in the state.

He said it was surprising that the chairman of an electoral body, who is not just a lawyer, but a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a law professor, claimed not to know that internal party matters cannot be adjudicated on by courts.

Umeh said: “Well, the controversy over the party (ADC) leadership is very simple and straightforward. We are talking about the court making an order in the leadership of African Democratic Congress, and people are busy discussing the order made by the court, which INEC, headed by a professor of law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, feigned ignorance that no court in Nigeria has jurisdiction to entertain any matter bordering on internal affairs of a political party or leadership of a political party.

“The Supreme Court has delivered judgment a number of times in the past on this, the oldest was in 1983. The Supreme Court said it that courts do not answer political questions. Issues concerning internal affairs of political party is not justiciable. In other words, you can’t bring to court such issues since 1983.

“Then last year, for example, the Supreme Court in the case in the appeal brought by Senator Nenadi Usman against Julius Abure and the Labour Party, emphasized again that court has no jurisdiction to determine the leadership of a political party, or to get into any disputes involving internal affairs of a party or leadership of a political party. That was delivered on the 4th of April, 2025.

“Then this year, we, the National Assembly amended the Electoral Act, and in Section 83, subsection 5 of the Electoral Act 2026, as amended, the provision says that no court in Nigeria shall entertain jurisdiction to hear any matter or suit concerning internal affairs of a political party. Is there any ambiguity in this?

“So whether the Federal High Court of Justice Nwite made any order or raised any issue, it cannot stand. And the Court of Appeal that made the damning order that INEC wants to rely on, to say now, ‘oh, the order is that we should return to status quo and nobody should do anything’, that will render the trial court proceedings nugatory.

“The same Court of Appeal has no jurisdiction, because the matter in dispute is who are the leaders of ADC. Is it David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, or Nafiu Bala Gombe?

“So the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction, the Court of Appeal has no jurisdiction, even Supreme Court has no jurisdiction by this explanation. So they now made that order and INEC lapped on it to begin to say that there are issues in.

“That is murder. What they committed is murder and is unacceptable. They cannot do that. Nigeria is a country that is governed by laws, and the instances I have given you now show you clearly that the two courts have no reason to meddle into this matter, and INEC that is acting on it is mischievous.

“INEC is headed by a professor of law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He knows that the two courts have no jurisdiction to entertain the matter. So why is he acting on it? And in acting on it, he acted on it wrongly.”

Seyi Makinde has urged Bimbo Adekanbi, the governorship candidate of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, in the state, to avoid inheriting his political enemies if she wins in 2027.

Makinde advised Adekanbi to concentrate on creating her own leadership style.

The governor gave the advice during the party’s presidential/governorship primary election, where he encouraged Adekanbi to stay focused on governance, service delivery, and the continuation of development projects.

The governor stated that leadership is not perfect by nature, pointing out that people in public positions will inevitably make mistakes.

“Don’t inherit my enemies, chart your own path. I am only human and I make mistakes,” Makinde said.

He encouraged the governorship candidate to build on what his administration has already accomplished while working to deliver better results in governance for the people of the state.

“Make sure you build on anything we have done to help our people,” he said.

Makinde also spoke about his government’s development plans based on the “Omituntun” framework.

He expressed optimism about the state’s future progress.

“You have gone through my first term, Omituntun 1.0. You’ve gone through my second term, Omituntun 2.0.

“Omituntun 3.0 is starting up, and I promise you that Bimbo Adekanbi will do a great job for you,” he stated.

The South-South leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Youth Wing, has commenced consultations with political mobilisers ahead of the 2027 elections to consolidate support for President Tinubu and the party in the region.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday, signed by the APC Youth Leader for the South-South, Avwomakpotor Uhrorho, following a courtesy visit to the office of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Akwa Ibom State chapter.

Uhrorho noted that the party needs leaders with credibility, capacity, and strong grassroots acceptance to engage young people and help deliver victory for the party.

He said the regional youth leadership has identified young leaders with the credibility, capacity, and grassroots influence needed to drive youth mobilisation for the APC in the region, noting that the APC youth wing is ready to work with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors to deepen grassroots mobilisation.

He explained that the visit aims to strengthen unity, promote collaboration, and advance the shared vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda through active youth engagement and strategic partnerships.

The APC youths noted that elections in modern times require effective communication and constructive engagement with young people rather than violence and intimidation, stressing that social media misinformation has contributed greatly to negative public perception of government policies.

“We are here because of the leaders in this region that we need to work with. We need leaders with credibility, capacity, and strong grassroots acceptance who can engage young people and help deliver victory for our party,” he said.

Speaking during the engagement, the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Obong Prince Ikim, expressed appreciation to the youth leaders for their support and commitment to the party, describing the Renewed Hope Agenda as a practical and transformative vision already yielding visible results across the country.

He stressed that youths must serve as a bridge between government and the people by promoting civic engagement, strategic communication, and mass mobilisation, while also relaying the concerns and aspirations of citizens back to the government.

“Today, Nigerians can clearly see that the Renewed Hope Agenda is not just a slogan. As youth leaders and ambassadors of this movement, we carry the responsibility of ensuring that the achievements and reforms of government are properly communicated to the grassroots,” he said.

He further charged youth leaders across the South-South to remain deliberate, united, and focused in advancing the ideals of national development, peace, and responsible political participation.

2027: Omo-Agege defects to NDC, eyes Delta Central Senatorial seat

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), six days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Omo-Agege made the announcement in a personal statement on Thursday, May 28, 2026, declaring his intention to contest the Delta Central Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections.

In the statement, Senator Omo-Agege said his decision followed weeks of deep reflection and extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders across Delta State.

“I formally announce my decision to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC),” he stated. “This is the product of weeks of reflection, wide consultations, and honest conversations with the people I serve.”

Omo-Agege praised the NDC’s leadership, particularly Senator Seriake Dickson (Leader and Founder), Senator Moses Cleopas (National Chairman), Mr. Peter Obi (Presidential Aspirant), and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing the party as a credible platform built on inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation, and true federalism.

The former Senate Deputy President, who will be aligning with Peter Obi’s presidential bid, criticised the current governance structure in Delta State, lamenting the poor state of infrastructure despite the state’s huge federal allocations and vast natural resources.

“Delta State holds a position of immense responsibility in Nigeria as one of the largest producers of oil and gas. Yet the reality on the ground does not match this potential,” he said.

He highlighted issues such as collapsed roads, ill-equipped health centres, overcrowded schools, and youth unemployment, describing the situation as “a failure of leadership and a betrayal of public trust.”

Omo-Agege vowed to return to the Senate to provide effective representation, promising to push for better utilisation of resources, job creation, improved healthcare, education, and infrastructure development in Delta Central and the state at large.

He assured that he would not be a “benchwarmer” in Abuja but would fight for the interest of his district while promoting unity across Delta North, South, and Central.

The senator also called on the youths, women, elders, and traditional rulers of Delta State to actively participate in the 2027 electoral process, urging them to obtain and protect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“This is more than an election cycle. This is a defining moment for Delta State and for Nigeria,” Omo-Agege declared. “Together, under the banner of the National Democratic Congress, we will reclaim Delta State. Together, we will reclaim Nigeria.”

Senator Omo-Agege served as Deputy President of the 9th Senate and was a major political figure in Delta State politics before his recent resignation from the APC.
