Barcelona Complain to UEFA About Atletico’s Pitch Ahead of Champions League Game
Hansi Flick has complained to UEFA about the Wanda Metroplolitano pitch ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League quarter-final second leg clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening.
The Catalan giants went into the tie as favourites but were well beaten at the Camp Nou in the first leg. Julian Alvarez gave Atletico the lead on the stroke of half-time, finding the net a minute after Pau Cubarsi was given a controversial red card.
Alexander Sorloth doubled the away side’s advantage with 20 minutes remaining and there were no further goals as Atletico clinched an impressive 2-0 victory.
Barcelona later released a sensational statement slamming the referee’s ‘unfathomable’ decision to give Cubarsi his marching orders.
Hansi Flick Complains to UEFA
Barcelona have complained to UEFA again after his side trained at Atletico’s pitch, the Wanda Metropolitano, ahead of the match.
According to Marca, Flick was not impressed after inspecting the turf. He reportedly thinks that the grass is too long and approached a UEFA official to ask about measuring the pitch.
Rules state that the height of the grass does not exceed three centimeters (30 millimeters) uniformly across the entire pitch. Barcelona prefer to play on shorter grass, with the Camp Now pitch typically at 2.3 centimeters.
UEFA responded by saying that they would calibrate and trim the grass if necessary, but Atletico have denied any wrongdoing.
They have stated that the grass is the same height as it has been throughout this season and in past campaigns. They even claim that the condition of the pitch has improved significantly in recent times, after overcoming the effects of the cold weather in the opening months of the year.
Hansi Flick Slammed For Complaints
Flick’s complaints have not gone down well with Cadena SER journalist, Manu Carreno. Carreno said, per Tribuna:
“Sometimes I notice that Hansi Flick is starting to resemble Xavi complaining about the referees, the pitch. For a moment, I closed my eyes and saw Xavi. Complaining about the officiating in the first leg, wondering what the refereeing will be like in the return game…
“We saw him talking to UEFA representatives about the state of the field. This surprised me. For other coaches, the grass wasn’t anything unusual, but it surprised Hansi Flick. I suppose the pressure the Catalans are putting on themselves ahead of the match works in their favor, as they know exactly what is at stake.”
Flick, meanwhile, thinks his team are capable of a comeback. He said, per Barcelona’s official website: “I believe in my team and I think we can do it – it’s possible. I know we are up against a strong Atlético side with great players. We have to secure in defence and brave in attack. We have to take our chances as that was the difference in the first leg.”

Romano Hints Liverpool Will Move to Sign Eli Junior Kroupi for Iraola
Liverpool could make a move for a ‘world-class’ £100m-rated striker once the appointment of Andoni Iraola is confirmed, journalist Fabrizio Romano has hinted.
Liverpool sacked Arne Slot out of nowhere on Saturday after previous briefings from the media that he would be staying next season, despite a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
The Reds now want to bring Andoni Iraola in as the Dutchman’s replacement, with the Spaniard a free agent after he left Bournemouth following the expiry of his contract.
Romano has already given the ‘here we go’ to the move, with a deal expected to be completed this week for the 43-year-old to take charge at Anfield.
Should that be confirmed, then work will get underway off the pitch to give Iraola the squad he needs to improve Liverpool’s fortunes after their fifth-placed finish this term.
One area they look to need reinforcements in is in attack, especially with Mohamed Salah’s exit confirmed and the fact that Hugo Ekitike could be missing through injury until 2027.
The Reds’ current options up top include Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Alexander Isak and RIo Ngumoha, but they will need more strength in depth if they want to compete in the league and Champions League.
Romano Hints at Liverpool Move for Eli Junior Kroupi
Eli Junior Kroupi is attracting interest from the very biggest clubs across Europe following an outstanding breakthrough campaign with Bournemouth, under the leadership of Iraola.
The Frenchman scored 13 goals in 33 Premier League appearances for the Cherries at the age of 19, which has led to contact from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the summer transfer window.
Romano has hinted that Liverpool could get involved in the race too, should Iraola’s appointment at Anfield be confirmed.
The Italian journalist issued the latest on the £80-100m-rated Junior Kroupi’s future on his YouTube channel.
He said: “I can tell you for sure, Arsenal have called, Manchester City have called, and more clubs are interested. Let’s see if Iraola goes to Liverpool. But also Paris Saint-Germain are in the mix for Eli Junior Kroupi.
“Paris Saint-Germain had some contacts. Paris Saint-Germain took some information on the player, and Paris Saint-Germain really appreciate him, and have a very good connection with his agents.
“So, Premier League giants, Arsenal, Man City, let’s see what happens with Liverpool, with Iraola, and now also Paris Saint-Germain in the mix.”
Liverpool In Talks to Sign Yan Diomande
While Liverpool could decide to join the race for Junior Kroupi in the coming weeks, one player they are holding talks to sign now is RB Leizpig sensation Yan Diomande.
Another 19-year-old who has had a remarkable breakthrough season with Leipzig, he is also in demand among some of the biggest club teams in Europe.
Reports suggest that the Reds are in talks regarding personal terms with the Ivory Coast international’s representatives, although they will face competition from Champions League winners PSG.
The Merseysiders may hold an advantage though, with it believed that the teenager currently favours joining them because he has been guaranteed more first-team minutes than he would get at the Parc des Princes.

Man Utd Will Complete Ederson Transfer in Next 24-48 Hours
Manchester United will complete a major transfer in the ‘next 24-48 hours’, according to journalist Andy Mitten.
Man United are planning wholesale additions to their squad this summer to ensure they are ready to compete in the Champions League alongside the Premier League, having had no European football to deal with this season.
It is no secret that the Red Devils’ big priority is to transform their midfield during the close season, with up to three new players arriving in the position to complement Kobbie Mainoo in the centre of the park.
Casemiro leaves a big void to fill after his outstanding performances alongside Mainoo under Michael Carrick’s leadership in recent months, while Manuel Ugarte seemingly looks likely to leave Old Trafford after failing to convince both Ruben Amorim and Carrick that he is worthy of a starting place.
While United could add new faces in different positions across the side, including in goal, at full-back, on the wing and in the centre-forward position, if other players leave, they appear to be focusing on midfield first.
The closest deal appears to be for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with Fabrizio Romano revealing he is expecting it go through ‘unless something crazy happens’.
Andy Mitten: Ederson Deal Completed in Next 24-48 Hours
United We Stand editor and Athletic journalist Andy Mitten has gone one step further, revealing that he believes that the deal for Ederson will be completed in the next 24-48 hours.
Speaking on the United We Stand YouTube channel, Mitten provided an update on the deal from his information.
He said: “Manchester United and Atalanta of Bergamo do not yet have a full agreement for Ederson, the Brazilian box-to-box midfielder. However, I think, and I have spoken to people in Manchester, in Bergamo, and in other Italian cities, that an agreement is very, very close, so there’s been compromises.
“I fully expect that to be done within the next 24-48 hours.”

Man Utd Also Set to Complete Signing of Cristian Orozco
Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but he could be one of a number of midfielders to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, with another transfer close to completion, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Man United will seal a deal to bring Brazil international Ederson to Old Trafford ‘unless something crazy happens’, according to Fabrizio Romano, with personal terms already agreed for the 26-year-old to move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are expected to agree a deal with the Serie A outfit worth under £40m for the Brazilian, as they begin a major midfield rebuild this summer.
Casemiro is already confirmed to be leaving having struck up a successful relationship with Kobbie Mainoo during the second half of this season, with Manuel Ugarte expected to join him through the exit door if the club has their way.
Should that happen, Ederson could be one of three senior central midfielders to arrive over the course of the next few months, but they are also looking at bringing in young players who can make the grade too.
United have signed the likes of Diego Leon, Sekou Kone, Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi in recent seasons, and they are set to land another in Cristian Orozco.
Man United Will Sign Cristian Orozco in July
According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United will complete the signing of 17-year-old Colombian midfielder Orozco next month.
Last year, United reached a preliminary agreement with Fortaleza CEIF for Orozco to move to Old Trafford in this summer transfer window, given he couldn’t complete a move until he is 18 years of age.
The midfielder spent the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign at Fortaleza, but is now set to travel to England next month to complete a move.
Orozco was included in 11 Fortaleza first-team squads this season, making two starts and two substitute appearances in a breakthrough campaign.
Orozo Described as the ‘Next Casemiro’
While Man United are determined to land a big-money replacement for Casemiro this summer, they may already have their long-term replacement for the Brazilian in Orozco.
The 17-year-old has been described by scouts as the ‘next Casemiro’ according to one prominent statistician on X, given he is a midfield destroyer with progressive distribution and leadership maturity beyond his teenage years.
Orozco has already been shown around Carrington and Old Trafford in December, having been identified as an exciting sensation with potential to be a first-team player for the Red Devils in the future.
The signings of players like Kone, Leon and Orozco at low cost are seen as low-risk, high-reward signings for the club, which will supplement some of the big-money additions the club makes.
As well as Ederson and Orozco, United are still looking at other midfield options with West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni some of the names mentioned the most in recent weeks.
The Red Devils will hope to deliver Michael Carrick the squad he needs to compete strongly in the Champions League, while maintaining their Premier League position, next term.
