Group backs Ogun APC caucus decision, urges Gbenga Daniel to uphold democratic norms

Published

The Centre for the Advocacy for Human Rights and Social Justice has thrown its weight behind the decision of the Ogun East Senatorial District caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to restrict attendance at its recent meeting to duly accredited members, describing the move as a necessary step to preserve order, discipline and institutional integrity.

In a press release made available to journalists and signed by its Leader, Olufemi Akindele, the group said the controversy surrounding the alleged exclusion of Senator Gbenga Daniel was being unnecessarily amplified, stressing that party structures must be respected by all members, regardless of status.

The organisation maintained that caucus meetings are governed by clear guidelines and are not open gatherings, noting that attendance is typically based on prior invitation and recognition within the party hierarchy. It argued that the decision to limit participation was neither arbitrary nor targeted, but consistent with established norms aimed at ensuring productive deliberations.

According to the statement, attempts to portray the development as an affront to Senator Daniel were misplaced, adding that internal party mechanisms should not be misrepresented in a way that could mislead the public or create avoidable tension.

“The decision of the caucus to admit only invited stakeholders is in line with democratic best practices within political parties. Discipline, order and respect for procedure are the pillars upon which any credible political institution must stand,” the group stated.

The Centre further called on Daniel to demonstrate statesmanship by respecting party decisions and utilising internal channels to address any grievances, rather than resorting to public criticism. It noted that as a ranking member of the party, the former governor is expected to model democratic conduct and contribute to strengthening, rather than undermining, party cohesion.

While urging restraint among supporters, the group cautioned against dragging the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, into what it described as a purely party-driven matter. It reiterated that the meeting in question was not convened by the state government, but by party stakeholders acting within their constitutional framework.

“It is important, that political leaders separate governance from party administration. Bringing the person of the governor into this issue only serves to politicise a straightforward organisational procedure,” the statement added.

The group emphasized that healthy democracies thrive on respect for rules and collective decisions, not on personal interpretations of entitlement. It warned that persistent public attacks on party processes could weaken internal democracy and set a poor example for younger members.

Concluding, the Centre urged all stakeholders within the APC to remain committed to unity and due process, while encouraging Senator Daniel to align with the principles of party discipline and democratic engagement in resolving disputes.

A community leader in Warri South-West local government, Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, has called for a peaceful resolution of the Supreme Court’s ordered delineation of the Warri Federal Constituency.

His call follows the shutdown of 13 flow stations by protesting Ijaw women in Gbaramatu Kingdom, on the 8th of June.

Ekpemupolo made the call in a statement sent to journalists in Warri.

He noted that, “The Ijaw nation has from time immemorial been known for its peaceful ways and cannot deviate from its history.

“The current political situation arising from the failure of INEC to complete the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency and mass action must not be allowed to be hijacked or degenerate into violence of any sort.

“I am calling for calm, no matter the situation. I am also calling for a meeting of community leaders to meet immediately to enable us to devise a way forward.”

According to him, “We must all join hands in seeking a peaceful resolution to this impasse.

“INEC must determine to do the right thing and restore the peace in Warri and environs.

“We call on the people of Warri (whether Ijaw, Itsekiri or Urhobo) to be calm and wait patiently for INEC to do the right thing.”

Indigenous Ijaw women had on Monday, staged a protest and shut down the flow stations operated by an oil company in the Gbaramatu enclave.

They vowed that they will remain in the facility until the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, implements the Supreme Court judgement on the delineation of Wards and Polling units in the Warri Federal Constituency.

You’re looking for campaign funds  —  Okonkwo reacts to Obi’s N5bn defamation suit

Actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has reacted to the N5 billion defamation suit reportedly being prepared against him by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing the move as unwise and challenging Obi to proceed with the court action.

Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for Obi’s presidential campaign, made his position known in a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday.

His reaction followed reports that Obi had threatened legal action against him over alleged defamatory comments, with a demand for N5 billion in damages.

Responding to the development, Okonkwo said he had been informed of a letter allegedly sent by Obi and his lawyers but had yet to read it.

“It has been brought to my notice that there is a letter circulating online from the hypocrite, Peter Obi, and his Lawyers that I should pay him N5b. Hahaha!” he wrote.

“If Peter Obi is looking for money to campaign, he should privately ask me for assistance, not come from extortion, and I will help him.”

The former Labour Party chieftain claimed that he personally incurred expenses while serving as Obi’s spokesperson during the 2023 election campaign.

“I did so when I was his Spokesperson paying for my flight tickets and booking for my hotel accommodation to some of our campaigns,” he said.

Okonkwo also warned that Obi’s lawyers should take responsibility for any information that could emerge if the dispute proceeds.

“Let me sound this note of warning, the Lawyers must take responsibility for any information I may have to divulge, which I acquired as a spokesperson, but which by my conscience I have not shared with anyone,” he stated.

He added that suing a former spokesperson over defamation was a poor decision.

“Anyone who decides to sue his former Spokesperson for defamation is indeed very unwise,” Okonkwo said.

The former campaign spokesman maintained that he would respond formally after reviewing the letter, while urging Obi and his legal team to proceed with the case.

“It will be a shame to Peter Obi and his Lawyers if they do not take this case to court. I don’t have time or patience for scammers,” he said.

The latest exchange marks a fresh twist in the deteriorating relationship between Obi and Okonkwo, who were political allies during the 2023 presidential election but have since publicly disagreed on a range of political issues.
