BREAKING: Tinubu nominates new Minister of Power
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power.
The president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, announced this in a statement on Thursday.
He said the nomination has been transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in accordance with the Constitution.
“The nomination follows the resignation of the former Minister, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down from office to pursue elective office.
“Mr Tegbe, from Oyo State, is a fiscal and economic reform expert with over 35 years of experience spanning the public and private sectors.
“He is a former Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led wide-ranging initiatives in fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation, and governance. He has also advised key government institutions and private sector organisations on strategic reforms, regulatory frameworks, and investment structuring.
“He is at present the Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), where he is responsible for strengthening bilateral development cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China.
“The NCSP also coordinates engagements with public sector stakeholders to advance economic and social development in line with FOCAC objectives”, Onanuga said.

Why Tinubu needs to resign — Atiku’s aide
Media Adviser and spokesperson to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Mr Paul Ibe, has said that President Bola Tinubu should resign over what he described as the government’s failure to address insecurity across the country.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Tuesday, Ibe argued that the primary responsibility of any government is to ensure the security and welfare of its citizens.
According to him, Nigeria is less secure now than it was in 2023, citing figures which he claimed showed that 879 people had been killed, while nearly 300 others remained in captivity.
He described the statistics as alarming and said they reflected the scale of insecurity facing the country.
Ibe further stated that the government’s efforts to tackle the situation had not yielded sufficient results, stressing that the country could not continue with what he termed a “trial and error” approach to governance.
He said: “Let me tell you why President Tinubu needs to resign. The primary responsibility of government is security and welfare. Are we more secure now than we were in 2023? The answer is No.
“According to statistics, 879 people have been killed, and nearly 300 are in captivity. Those statistics are very frightening. That’s a snapshot of the pervasive insecurity that we have.
“The government’s efforts are not good enough. I mean, we can’t continue on this journey of trial and error. The truth of the matter is that Tinubu is incompetent and clueless.”

Bye election: Gov Sule’s aide alleges attack on Gyunka
Senator Philip Aruwa Gyunka, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, reportedly escaped an attack by suspected political thugs while travelling to participate in the recently concluded Nasarawa North Senatorial District bye-election.
The allegation was made by a media aide to Governor Abdullahi Sule, Ango Ngharni, in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to him, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 20, as the former senator was travelling to his hometown of Gbuje to take part in the by-election.
Nggarmi alleged that the attackers, armed with machetes and axes, intercepted Gyunka’s convoy and attempted to assault him.
The governor’s aide, however, stated that the APC stalwart escaped unharmed, although his vehicle was reportedly damaged during the attack.
Ngharni condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement regarding the alleged attack, while the identities and motives of the assailants remain unknown.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has presented the Certificate of Return to the senator-elect for Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Danladi Halilu Envulu-Anza of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following his victory in the recently concluded by-election.
The presentation ceremony took place on Monday, 22nd June, 2026, a day after the commission officially declared Envulu-Anza winner of the poll conducted across Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon and Wamba Local Government Areas of the state.
Envulu-Anza emerged victorious after polling 45,362 votes to defeat his closest rivals, including former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku of the Labour Party (LP), who secured 12,931 votes, and David Emmanuel Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 11,570 votes.
Speaking shortly after receiving the Certificate of Return, the senator-elect expressed gratitude to the electorate for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to provide quality representation to the people of Nasarawa North at the National Assembly.
He assured constituents that he would work tirelessly to advance their interests, attract development projects and contribute meaningfully to legislative efforts aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
The bye-election was conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of former Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented the district until his passing on December 31, 2025.
With the issuance of the Certificate of Return, Envulu-Anza is expected to complete the necessary legislative formalities ahead of his inauguration as the new representative of Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the Senate.
