They are helping APC win without knowing it – Shehu slams divided opposition parties

Published

on

Public commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has warned that opposition political parties in Nigeria risk losing the 2027 elections due to internal division, personal ambition, and lack of cooperation among their leaders.

In a post shared on his verified X handle on Sunday, Shehu said opposition parties such as PDP, LP, ADC, NDC, PRP and others are struggling to present a united front capable of challenging the ruling party.

He wrote that when opposition leaders are driven by personal ambition and greed, they may end up with neither power nor honour but pain and lamentations of had we known.

Shehu argued that several factors are weakening the opposition, including what he described as bias within the electoral system.

“INEC are visibly partial and have descended into the political arena as an extension of APC, or so it seems.”

He also alleged that ruling party figures appear to be working together to weaken opposition chances.

“APC chieftains seem to be in tacit agreement to ensure they face no credible opposition.”

On the judiciary, he claimed that courts are not fully neutral in political matters, stating that they are neither willing nor prepared to be impartial arbiters.

He further criticised the electoral system, saying some provisions of the Electoral Act are worse than a military decree and skewed against opposition parties.

According to him, opposition aspirants are also worsening the situation due to desperation and personal ambition.

“Their personal ambitions have overshadowed the dangers facing Nigeria. Because the opposition leaders are not truly seeing the bigger picture and the monumental dangers ahead. They are looking inside a mirror but don’t seem to understand the image they are seeing.,” he said.

Shehu added that lack of unity among opposition politicians is weakening their chances.

He noted that a united front could have produced a strong force capable of challenging the ruling party.

“An honest harmony between the gladiators would have produced a historically formidable opposition capable of giving APC a chase for its money. The refusal of the over ambitious gladiators to cooperate among themselves and arrive at a consensus will serve as a fuel to power the engine of the APC car that will drive to success even if without destination.

“The rumored plan by the opposition to move to another party (NDC, PRP, APM) etc and some among them going back to APC is nothing but a final burial arrangement with neither a priest nor an imam willing to preside over the burial rites. Out of their greed, miscalculation and naivety, the gladiators are ready and willing to dump millions of Nigerians into the gutter.”

He also cautioned that 2027 may represent a turning point for opposition leaders.

According to him, it could be their last chance to remain relevant in national politics if they fail to unite.

“The opposition gladiators should take note that now is their last chance to be of any significance in the politics of Nigeria because after losing 2027 opportunity there will be no more Nigeria for them to
contest for, as smaller nations may probably emerge in which they will have no role to play because they have rocked the boats.

“If the opposition is united, they have the chance of being called credible opposition. If they remain divided, they will be reduced into combustible materials with neither market nor value, deserving neither sympathy nor pity,” he added.

He concluded his message by expressing faith in divine intervention, saying God remains capable of changing difficult situations, adding that with Him, everything is possible.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has asked President Bola Bola Tinubu to learn from former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, saying they never deregistered opposition political parties.

Atiku made the call on Saturday in reaction to an attempt to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, through the courts.

The former Vice President said attempts to restrict political competition run contrary to democratic principles and could erode public confidence in the electoral process.

“Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari never deregistered opposition political parties. Copy and learn from them.

“If you’re truly popular and your policies have positively bettered the lives of the citizens, you shouldn’t be afraid of a free and fair competition,” Atiku said.
