Manchester United 11 That Received Guard of Honour From Chelsea in 2007

Published

on

When Manchester United travelled to Stamford Bridge in May 2007, they received a guard of honour from Chelsea’s players. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had just been crowned Premier League champions, so the likes of John Terry, Claude Makelele and Michael Essien applauded their opponents onto the pitch.

However, Fergie had deployed a weakened starting XI with the forthcoming FA Cup final against the Blues at the forefront of his mind. He benched the likes of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes, while Cristiano Ronaldo was given the night off. This allowed various fringe players to enjoy a rare start, and the image of these players receiving a guard of honour from Chelsea’s stars regularly pops up on social media (see below). But what happened to the 11 players who featured in that bizarre starting 11?

Tomasz Kuszczak

Tomasz Kuszczak made a total of 61 appearances for the Red Devils before joining Brighton on a permanent deal in 2012. The Polish goalkeeper was a decent back-up at Old Trafford but lacked the quality required to cement his status as the club’s number one.

“I didn’t get what I really wanted,” Kuszczak admitted during an interview with Man Utd in 2022. “I wanted to be goalkeeper number one for Manchester United, but I respected that, because Edwin [van der Sar] was a fantastic goalkeeper. If I had to lose against someone, or be stopped from getting the number one, it would be by a guy like Edwin.”

The 44-year-old went on to play for Wolves and Birmingham before retiring after his contract at St Andrew’s wasn’t renewed. After retiring, Kuszczak returned to Poland, where he founded a construction company and earned a degree in sports journalism. On September 20, 2023, he joined Michal Probierz’s coaching staff for the Poland national team as a goalkeeping coach. However, on March 18, 2024, it was announced that he was no longer part of the national team setup.

Kieran Lee

The guard of honour against Chelsea came before just one of only three appearances the left-back made for Man Utd. Kieran Lee joined third-tier Oldham in 2008 before signing for Sheffield Wednesday four years later. It was at Hillsborough Stadium where he would discover his best form, scoring 22 goals in 217 appearances.

Lee then moved to Bolton Wanderers in 2021, where he plied his trade for three years before retiring. There, he played a further 91 games, contributing to 12 goals.

Wes Brown

Man United appearances: 362

Wes Brown was part of Man Utd’s 2008 Champions League-winning team and remained at Old Trafford until 2011, when he moved to Sunderland. He was one of very few players in that bizarre guard of honour who can say he definitely earned his stripes at Old Trafford, having realised his boyhood dream to go on and feature 362 times for the Red Devils.

The former defender, now 46, ended his career in 2018 following a brief stint with Kerala Blasters in India. Brown has dabbled in coaching and punditry since hanging up his boots. He was also the former United player who conducted the club’s Old Trafford interview with Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese superstar completed his surprise return to Manchester in 2021. In 2023, he was declared bankrupt, though he seems to have been on the mend since.

John O’Shea

A model professional like the aforementioned Wes Brown, John O’Shea also moved to Sunderland from United in 2011. He ended his playing career in 2019 following a season with Reading and then embarked on a career in coaching, first taking a job with the Royals before working with the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21s between 2020-2023.

The 45-year-old – who scored a couple of priceless goals for Man Utd, including a famous late winner against Liverpool at Anfield towards the end of the 2006-07 campaign – briefly became the Republic of Ireland interim manager in 2024, but can now be found more often or not in the media as an occasional pundit.

Manchester United’s greatest ever academy XI

Manchester United have produced many brilliant young players in the years gone by, but which players make it into an all-time XI?

Gabriel Heinze

Fell out with Ferguson after attempting to force a move to Liverpool, Gabriel Heinze went on to play for Real Madrid, Marseille, AS Roma and Newell’s Old Boys before retiring in 2014. The 48-year-old then became a manager and has since coached Godoy Cruz, Argentinos Juniors, Velez Sarsfield and MLS side Atlanta United.

The Argentine was most recently in charge of Newell’s – the club Lionel Messi famously supported as a youngster. He departed after a year at the club, during which they finished mid-table in the league and were knocked out in the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 by Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, and he hasn’t been in management since 2023. He is, however, part of Mikel Arteta’s backroom staff at Arsenal

Chris Eagles

Rio Ferdinand revealed a few years ago that Roy Keane punched Chris Eagles during a training session, which may explain why he didn’t last very long at Old Trafford. “I remember when Roy Keane punched up Chris Eagles one time,” Ferdinand told the VIBE with FIVE podcast, per the Daily Mail. “He (Eagles) was only [a] young kid, (taking) liberties. It was good for him, Eagles.

“Roy must have been coming back from an injury, or he didn’t play, and he was playing with the reserves and the youngsters that were in there, like Eagles and Lee Martin, were like rats, getting in close and trying to tackle. He went in late on Roy once or twice and Roy said to him, ‘Listen, slow down’. The ball comes in again, Eagles was trying to impress, trying to leave his mark and left a little bit on Roy again and pulled his jersey.

“Roy just turned round and went bang in the jaw. A quick short jab and I just stood there and went, ‘Roy, what’s wrong with you?’. And I went inside and said, ‘Roy, why are you doing that for? He’s a young kid man’. And I warned him.”

The former winger played 17 times for the Red Devils before moving to Burnley in 2008. He has since played for Bolton, Blackpool, Charlton, Bury, Accrington Stanley, Port Vale, Ross County and Oldham. The 40-year-old last played professionally in January 2020 but will never forget his time working under Ferguson.

“Sir Alex had his certain players like me, Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson who he had soft spots for,” Eagles told Ladbrokes in 2021. “If I was ever in trouble, he’d tell me off, though. I drove a car somewhere when I was 15 and Sir Alex found out about it and called me in his office. I was petrified.

“It’s the worst experience ever because you don’t know what he’s going to do. I can remember standing outside of his office, sweating, going red. He used to have a folder where he used to keep his notes. It was a hard-back. Every time he walked past me he used to just slap me on the head with it – all in good humour, obviously. He was just a great manager, a great guy, and that’s how he got his respect.”

Alan Smith

Transformed from a centre-forward to midfield enforcer under Ferguson, Alan Smith’s Man Utd career was sadly derailed by a terrible injury that he suffered during an FA Cup clash against Liverpool at Anfield in 2006. The former England international, who went on to play for Newcastle, MK Dons and Notts County, sustained a broken leg and dislocated ankle after charging down a John Arne Riise free-kick.

In many ways, it was a minor miracle that he was able to continue his career. He still feels the effects of that horrific injury today and struggles to walk. Smith now lives in Orlando, Florida, and works with youngsters as a coach at the XL Soccer World Academy. The Yorkshireman also enjoys a bit of surfing.

Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher

Much-maligned during the early years of his career, Darren Fletcher stayed with United until 2015 and became a firm fan favourite during that time. Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2008, the Scot missed a chunk of his career due to the debilitating condition but bravely battled back and went on to play for West Brom and Stoke City before retiring in 2019.

Fletcher returned to Old Trafford after accepting the opportunity to become a first-team coach. He briefly worked as the Red Devils’ technical director before then reverting to his old role, and his name could be given a second bite of the cherry by his two sons, both of whom are showing promising form in the club’s youth teams. The Scot had a brief spell in charge of the first-team in early 2026.

Kieran Richardson

Man United appearances: 81

A talented youngster, Kieran Richardson blew hot and cold for United before joining Sunderland in 2007. He became a born-again Christian around the same time, telling reporters: “I just want to praise Jesus Christ and go to heaven. That’s all I care about”.

Richardson went on to play for Fulham, Aston Villa and Cardiff City but the 41-year-old had gone so long without a club since leaving the Welsh outfit in 2016, that he turned to a different source of income post-football. The former left-back has kept himself busy in recent years, collecting and selling luxury watches.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Whatever happened to this guy? In case you’ve been living under a rock on the moon, you’ll be very aware that Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho as Man Utd manager in 2018 (a scenario nobody would have envisaged 11 years earlier).

While the Norwegian enjoyed some great moments during his three-year tenure, Solskjaer was relieved of his duties in 2021 after results and performance levels spiralled. Nevertheless, the Baby-Faced Assassin will always love United – and the fans will always love him. Across his 366 appearances for the club as a player, he scored 126 goals and played a defining role in six Premier League title-winning campaigns. Solskjaer is now aiming to rebuild his reputation as a top coach after a spell with Besiktas in Turkey.

Man Utd Chiefs Ready to Finance Move to Sign ‘Best Footballer in the World’

Published

Benjamin Sesko’s promising start at Manchester United hasn’t ruled the club out of pursuing a deal for one of the best strikers on the planet.

The Slovenian frontman joined United from RB Leipzig last summer in a £74 million deal and finished his debut season strongly. He found the back of the net 12 times in 32 games after putting a difficult first few months behind him.

Michael Carrick’s arrival in January helped Sesko turn a corner and live up to expectations. His manager insisted that he is a big part of his plans and, at just 23 years old, can be expected to lead the line for years to come.

Man Utd Ready To Swoop if Kane is Available

United finished third in the Premier League last season, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. There has been a shift in spending and in the profile of targeted players since INEOS took over the club’s sporting operations.

One superstar who remains on the Red Devils’ wishlist is Harry Kane. TEAMtalk reports that the club are prepared to finance a move for the England captain if the opportunity arises.

Kane has entered the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich but the Bundesliga giants are confident of agreeing a new deal. There is interest in the 32-year-old around the globe, with Barcelona having made enquiries and Real Madrid requesting to be kept informed of the situation.

A return to Tottenham Hotspur is another possibility amid the North Londoners’ ambitious summer transfer window. The report also notes that clubs in the Saudi Pro League are keen on him, but he isn’t interested in heading to the Middle East at this stage of his career.

An eventual MLS move is mentioned, but that is likely to be in the long term rather than something Kane considers now. If he is to leave Bayern, a move to a European club seems most likely.

Kane Nothing More Than a Dream For Man Utd

United’s interest in Kane is partly due to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s continued admiration for ‘the best footballer in the world.’ The British billionaire doesn’t often influence transfer decisions at Old Trafford but could step in if there is a chance to sign England’s all-time top scorer.

Kane would be an unbelievable signing for Carrick and a world-class striker who would help fire the Red Devils back into title contention. But it appears he’s loving life in Munich and will probably extend his stay with the Bavarians.

United ultimately missed their opportunity to land the Ballon d’Or contender back in 2023 when he left Spurs for Bayern. It would take a shocking turn of events for them to seal his signature this summer.

Tottenham Hold Talks to Re-Sign Bayern Munich Striker Harry Kane

Tottenham have held talks to sign one of the best players in the world in a sensational move for the club.

It’s already been a successful summer transfer window for Tottenham, who have made a host of new additions.

Spurs have prioritised strengthening their defence and midfield while also bringing in a back-up goalkeeper.

Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson have all made the move to Tottenham this summer.

Spurs don’t appear to be finished there, though, as they look to switch their attention to strengthening in the forward positions.

Signing a striker and a winger could be their next priorities, but they’ll be happy with the business they’ve already done in early July.

According to a report from Team Talk, Tottenham are ready to sign Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane in the summer transfer window, looking to bring him back to Hotspur Way in a sensational move.

Spurs have held talks over a possible move for the England international, and they are well informed on developments surrounding their former player.

Tottenham could be in a position to bring Kane back to the club, potentially next summer, with intermediaries actively sounding out a potential next move for the striker.

Bayern Munich are in talks to extend his contract, which is no surprise given how crucial he’s been since his move to the Bundesliga.

Despite that, clubs are lurking in the background, including Tottenham.

Kane is proving at the World Cup that he’s still one of the best players in the world.

He certainly shouldn’t have had anything to prove, though, if his 25-26 season was anything to go off.

The English striker scored 64 goals in 56 appearances for Bayern Munich last season in all competitions, meaning he now has 146 goals in 147 games for them.

At the age of 32, he remains one of the best, with journalist Dom Smith describing him as ‘the best footballer in the world‘.

Convincing Bayern Munich to part ways with the forward is going to be a difficult task, but Tottenham will certainly try if it’s possible.

Andrea Pirlo Named Wayne Rooney as His Favourite English Player

Published

By

Legend of the 2000s, Andrea Pirlo was one of football’s finest midfielders. After lifting the World Cup with Italy in 2006, winning two Champions League trophies with AC Milan and collecting six Serie A titles, he cemented his reputation as one of the greatest modern midfielders.

Renowned for his calmness under pressure, Pirlo built his legacy through a cultured playing style and an exceptional passing range. Supporters in England may remember him most for his unforgettable Panenka at Euro 2012, which beat Joe Hart and helped eliminate the Three Lions.

Despite delivering one of England’s most painful tournament moments, Pirlo still had enormous admiration for several opponents. In fact, he once labelled one English star a ‘complete footballer’.

Andrea Pirlo Respected Man United Legend Wayne Rooney

As quoted by the Daily Mail in 2012, Pirlo was asked to name his ‘favourite English player’. His answer was straightforward:

“Wayne Rooney. He’s the complete footballer.”

The Manchester United great played all 120 minutes against Pirlo in the Euro 2012 quarter-final. Rooney also converted England’s second penalty to briefly give the Three Lions the advantage before Pirlo responded with his famous chipped effort.

The audacity of that Panenka appeared to swing the momentum, with Ashley Young and Ashley Cole both missing England’s next two penalties.

Although Rooney never progressed beyond the quarter-finals with England at a major tournament, he enjoyed an outstanding club career.

His greatest successes came at Manchester United, where he became the Red Devils’ all-time top goalscorer, while also winning the Champions League and five Premier League crowns. Combining goals, creativity, relentless work rate and vision, Rooney is widely regarded as one of the ‘most complete’ footballers the game has produced.

Pirlo Nearly Joined Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea

Andrea Pirlo AC Milan

While Pirlo clearly admired Rooney, he almost found himself lining up for one of Manchester United’s fiercest rivals. The Italian came close to joining Chelsea in 2009 after former AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti was appointed manager. Reflecting on the move in the same interview, Pirlo said:

“Actually, Milan wouldn’t let me go. I have a very strong connection with Ancelotti so I was in touch with him when he went to Chelsea and I’m still in touch with him now he’s at Paris Saint-Germain.

“I had already started negotiating with the people at Chelsea but then finally Milan didn’t let me go. That’s why I stayed.

“Certainly it would have been a different experience that I’d have liked, especially when I was 30 years old. So why not? But unfortunately it didn’t happen.”

He added: “I really enjoy English football. There are many top-quality teams, and the intensity they play with makes it exciting to watch.

“I don’t think adapting to that style would have been difficult because throughout my career I’ve played alongside many different types of players.”

One can only imagine how impressive Pirlo would have been as a Premier League midfielder.
