Sadiq Khan Says Tottenham Relegation is Better for London
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has offered an interesting explanation for which Premier League club the city’s residents should want to see relegated. At the moment, Wolves and Burnley are the only two teams whose fate in next season’s Championship has already been sealed, leaving just one relegation spot still up for grabs.
West Ham are the heavy favourites to finish 18th after their dramatic 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend. Meanwhile, Tottenham have picked up two wins and two draws from their last four matches, allowing Roberto De Zerbi’s side to edge two points clear of their London rivals with only two games remaining.
Tottenham, however, also face a much tougher run-in, having to travel to Chelsea before welcoming an Everton side fighting for European qualification on the final day. There’s a feeling among many neutrals that the Lilywhites going down would be better for the storyline, with a “big six” club falling into the Championship sure to be a shock. And the Mayor of London has now explained why that would, on a financial basis, be in the best interests of the capital’s residents.
Every Premier League Club Ranked by Difficulty of Their Remaining Fixtures
After an almost three-week break, the 2025-26 Premier League season is finally heading into its final stretch of fixtures.
Mayor Explains Why Londoners Should Want West Ham or Spurs Relegated
Khan has pointed out that Tottenham staying up at the Hammers’ expense would hit local residents in their own pockets. That is because the publicly-funded Greater London Authority (GLA) pays for the game-by-game running of the London Stadium, with West Ham shelling out £4.4million a year in rent.
And putting on 23 home matches in the second-tier instead of 19 in the Prem would incur higher stewarding costs. The Mayor of London since 2016, he explained as per The Sun:
“The previous Mayor, Boris Johnson, did the worst deal that can be imaginable. As far as West Ham are concerned, it is the deal of the century where he basically gave them this amazing stadium for 100 years, rent free.
“Now, if West Ham are relegated, we, the taxpayers, City Hall, could lose up to £2.5m a year. So what I say to Londoners who don’t support Spurs is you should probably be cheering on West Ham, because the taxpayer will lose out if West Ham go down.”
West Ham thought they had rescued a point against league leaders Arsenal on Sunday, but their 95th-minute equaliser was chalked off for a dubious foul on goalkeeper David Raya. And they’d already be as good as down if it weren’t for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser against Tottenham a day later.
Tottenham’s Relegation Would Be Hugely Damaging for Them
Needless to say, relegation for anyone is damaging. But for a club with expenditure as big as Tottenham’s, their instant return to the Premier League isn’t as guaranteed as many might think. The club already has the highest debt in English football, at £851.7 million, with much of it tied to their £1.2 billion stadium project.
Annual stadium-related costs, estimated at around £70 million, would remain unchanged regardless of league status. Meanwhile, on the pitch, the squad would be dismantled. As a team, Tottenham are valued at £648 million and pay average wages of around £100,000 per week. That is three to four times the typical Championship level, so they would be forced into significant player sales.

Liverpool in Talks to Sign Midfielder Joao Gomes: Perfect Fit for Iraola
Liverpool have opened talks to sign a new midfielder, and he could be absolutely perfect for Andoni Iraola.
It is clear that Liverpool are prioritising a move to sign a new winger in the summer transfer window as they search for a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
Despite that, the Reds can also look to strengthen in other areas of the pitch after a disappointing 25-26 season.
Liverpool could look to add more bodies in the middle of the park, especially with the likes of Curtis Jones linked with a departure.
Iraola also needs to add to his defence with both Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson leaving the club on free transfers.
It’s an important summer window for Liverpool, and they’ve now opened talks to sign a new midfielder.
Liverpool eyeing Mac Allister upgrade
According to reports in Portugal, Liverpool have opened talks to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes in the summer transfer window.
Atletico Madrid did have a deal agreed for the Brazilian midfielder, but doubts have now emerged over that transfer.
Alexis Mac Allister has enjoyed a difficult 25/26 season, so Liverpool could be looking to add another midfielder to their squad.
You could certainly argue that Gomes would be an upgrade on Mac Allister, especially for Iraola’s side.
Gomes would make the move to Liverpool and instantly become a regular starter at Anfield, so it’s a signing they certainly should be looking to pursue.

Gomes would explode under Iraola
Gomes is the type of midfielder that could easily explode under Iraola, and the new Liverpool manager would love him.
The Wolves man has been praised for his ‘insane’ work rate, something that Iraola values massively within his system.
Iraola likes his teams to press high up the pitch and suffocate the opposition as they look to win the ball back.
Gomes would be perfect for that system, so it’s no surprise that Liverpool have already opened talks to secure his signature.
Gomes is clearly happy to leave Wolves this summer after their relegation from the Premier League, so it could be a straightforward deal for them to do.

Newcastle Plotting Ambitious Move to Sign £250,000-a-Week Attacker
A new attacker is expected to arrive at Newcastle United this summer and Eddie Howe’s transfer chiefs could turn to one of their Premier League rivals.
It’s been a problematic start to the transfer window for the Magpies after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million. Their other midfield star, Bruno Guimaraes, is pushing for a move to Arsenal, and talks are set to take place.
Newcastle were expected to react to a disappointing 12th-placed finish last time out. A lack of goals was an issue, and adding a goalscorer to Howe’s squad is a must.
Newcastle Wait in Wings For Marmoush
Speculation continues to grow over Omar Marmoush’s future at Manchester City. The Egyptian forward only joined the club from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £59 million in January 2025 but could be on the move this summer.
TEAMtalk reports that Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur have made enquiries about the 27-year-old. There is also interest from the Bundesliga in the former Frankfurt man who caught the eye during his time in Germany.
Marmoush has endured a difficult spell at the Etihad, failing to live up to expectations. He lacked game time under Pep Guardiola, starting just eight of 21 league games last season.
The Egyptian is said not to be rushing for the exit door despite his struggles in the North-West thus far. He and his representatives want to understand where he features in new manager Enzo Maresca’s plans before making a decision.
Marmoush is the Goalscorer Howe Needs
Before Marmoush joined City on purported wages of £250,000 per week, his stock was sky-high amid an impressive spell at Frankfurt. He managed 37 goals and 20 assists in 67 games for the German club. It just hasn’t worked out for him at the Etihad, though he might be keen to wait and see whether Maresca gives him a chance.
For Newcastle, if they can sign the Egyptian for a reasonable price, they might be able to get the best out of him. Nick Woltemade’s slow start and Yoane Wissa’s frustrating debut campaign have furthered the need for more firepower.
Losing Alexander Isak was always going to be tough to deal but there are huge question marks over signing Woltemade and Wissa. Marmoush fits more with the profile of attacker the club should have targeted after selling Isak to Liverpool for £125m last summer.

Newcastle Agree Deal to Sign Arsenal Winger Kyran Thompson
Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign an Arsenal winger in the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.
It’s been an interesting summer transfer window for Newcastle so far, losing two of their key stars in Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
The Magpies have clearly had a big shift in their transfer dealings and their recruitment strategy, targeting up-and-coming talent rather than proven players.
Newcastle have made three new additions in the summer transfer window, with all of those players being 20 or under.
Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, and Ewen Jaouen have all arrived through the door at St. James’s Park, with Newcastle looking to replace their outgoing players with signings with high potential.
Newcastle agree Arsenal deal
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have agreed to do a deal to sign Arsenal and England Under-17 winger Kyran Thompson, with the deal now in place.
Newcastle beat a number of clubs to his signature, with Thompson leaving Arsenal as a free agent.
It is certainly a positive sign that Newcastle are able to attract young talent, especially when there is plenty of competition for the player.
It is unlikely that Thompson will come in and make an immediate impact on the senior squad, but it could be an exciting signing for the future.

Newcastle might need some ready-made additions
Although it’s an exciting plan for Newcastle to bring in some of the best talent from around Europe, they may also need to add some ready-made signings to their squad.
Losing Tonali and Gordon means that Newcastle have two guaranteed starters heading through the exit door, and the players that have come in to replace them might not be able to adapt to Premier League football immediately.
The new additions will need time to adapt and grow, meaning Newcastle can’t heavily rely on them instantly.
Although a handful of young signings will be beneficial, they also need some players to come in and be guaranteed starters.
