The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said that when former President Olusegun Obasanjo had little to his name after leaving prison, he, Atiku, fed and clothed Obasanjo, ensuring he lacked nothing.

The revelation is coming on the heels of Obasanjo’s statement that he regretted picking Ariku as his vice.

However, Atiku insisted that Obasanjo’s latest attack was rooted in his bitterness over the collapse of his third-term agenda years ago.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said he watched Obasanjo’s recent interview with sadness rather than anger.

Recalling his personal history with the former President, Atiku said he stood by Obasanjo during his years in prison and supported his family, and went further to clothe and care for him after his release before helping to build the political alliances that eventually produced his presidency.

“History records that while Chief Obasanjo was in prison, I stood firmly by him. I supported his family, worked tirelessly with other patriots for his release and never wavered in my belief that he deserved his freedom.

“When he eventually regained his freedom, he had little to his name. I received him, clothed him, ensured he was properly cared for and extended every support necessary to help him regain his footing”, he said.

Obasanjo had recently declared that his greatest regret in life was making Atiku his vice.

But speaking further, Atiku said; “I am proud that I stood against the third-term agenda. I am proud that I stood by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I have no apology whatsoever for frustrating every attempt to subvert our democracy for personal ambition,” Atiku said.

3rd term agenda

He maintained that if Obasanjo’s hostility stemmed from his refusal to back an unconstitutional third term, he would wear that resentment as “a badge of honour,” stressing that the Constitution remains supreme and that no individual is bigger than the country.

Atiku argued that the fight against the third-term agenda was never a personal contest between him and Obasanjo but a defence of Nigeria’s democracy, adding that history had already delivered its verdict in favour of the Constitution.

He also pointed to recent remarks by the Director-General of the World Trade Organization WTO, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who he said described the economic management team he led as among the best the country has had, questioning the timing of Obasanjo’s attack against that backdrop.

“Whether or not the timing is merely coincidental is for Nigerians to judge. What is beyond dispute, however, is that while distinguished Nigerians who served at the highest levels continue to acknowledge my contributions to one of Nigeria’s most successful periods of economic management, Chief Obasanjo appears determined to diminish them,” he said.

He said he harboured no regrets over those sacrifices, describing acts of kindness as matters of conscience rather than transactions requiring repayment, but warned that gratitude should not be replaced with revisionism.

Atiku expressed disappointment that a former President would devote energy to recycling old grudges at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic hardship, unemployment and insecurity, insisting that the 2027 election should focus on rebuilding the country rather than reopening old wounds.

He said his years of restraint towards Obasanjo were out of respect for the office the former President once occupied, but stressed that such restraint had limits.

“Chief Obasanjo is entitled to his opinions. He is entitled to his personal grievances. What he is not entitled to are his own facts.

“History is stubborn. It cannot be rewritten by bitterness, nor erased by repeated falsehoods. In the end, history will render its verdict—and so will the Nigerian people,” he stated.

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has commenced the statutory public display of academic credentials and personal particulars submitted by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, the All Progressives Congress APC presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 general election.

The commission said the exercise, which began on Saturday, is in line with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires it to publish candidates’ particulars within 21 days of receipt.

“Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties,” INEC stated.

Documents made available at INEC offices nationwide detailed Tinubu’s academic and professional history. His Form EC9 showed that he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University in the United States, awarded with honours on June 22, 1979.

The form further captured his National Youth Service Corps records, showing he served in Oyo State from December 1982 and was demobilised in November 1983. On his employment history, the document listed three employers: Mobil Nigeria Limited, where he worked between 1983 and 1992 before leaving on account of advancement; the Lagos State Government, where he served from 1999 to 2007 until the legal end of his tenure as governor; and the Federal Government of Nigeria, where he has served since 2023.

Entries for his primary and secondary school attendance were recorded as “0000,” with only his university qualification bearing a specific year. His personal information listed his date of birth as March 29, 1952, putting his age at 74, his birthplace as Lagos, his residential address as No. 4, Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, and his occupation as politician.

Shettima’s documents, by contrast, traced his education from the primary level. His Certificate of Primary Education, issued by the Ministry of Education of the defunct North-Eastern State, showed he attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978, placing second out of 22 pupils in his final year, with English, History and Religious Knowledge listed among his strongest subjects.

His West African Examinations Council result, obtained at Government Secondary School, Potiskum, in June 1983, showed six credits and passes, including distinctions in Religious Knowledge and Economics. He proceeded to the University of Maiduguri, graduating with a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture in August 1989, before earning a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. His NYSC discharge records showed he served between October 1989 and October 1990.

INEC noted that members of the public are entitled to apply for certified true copies of the nomination forms and other documents submitted by candidates, and may seek legal redress where allegations of false declaration or forgery arise.

The commission’s revised timetable indicates that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on August 19, with governorship and state assembly campaigns to follow later.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has alleged that the biggest mistake Governor Siminalayi Fubara made was trying to do things alone and building his own political structure too early after he assumed office on May 29, 2023.

Wike said the development clearly showed that the governor undermined those who supported him and the structure that brought him to power.

He stated this during a special media chat held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Saturday.

The minister said while leaving office as governor, he had laid a solid foundation which he wanted Fubara to build on so that the state could gradually catch up with Lagos in terms of infrastructural revolution, but little did he know that the latter had his own plans.

The former governor said he initiated the multi-billion naira Port Harcourt Ring Road project linking several local government areas which had already begun before he handed over to Fubara, saying it was a legacy project he personally conceived.

Wike said he had built 12 flyovers which were all commissioned while he was still in office as governor of the oil-rich state of Rivers which he boasted improved the infrastructure and aesthetics of Port Harcourt, the state capital and its environs.

While noting that politicians must be meticulous in their dealings, Wike said the mistake Fubara made had further widened the gap which he wanted to bridge between Lagos and Rivers State, development-wise.

“In politics, you have to be careful. There are those who want you to succeed and make a name. The opportunity that you have been given, not everybody that has that opportunity. There are those who are not happy who don’t want you to be there, and you have to be very careful.

“Remember, before I handed over to Governor Fubara we did a church service and I did say that ‘You have been elected. Few days, you will be sworn in. Now what do you want to achieve? See where I have stopped.’ My thinking is that we do need to compete with Lagos. We have laid the foundation; he (Fubara) should be able to continue from there; we will give you all the necessary support.”

He said part of the problems with Fubara was that early in the life of his administration as governor, he started listening to those who wanted him to fail, including people who wanted to occupy the position he presently occupies, saying they were the ones who advised the governor to start a fight with him (Wike).

“In this game you have your stone base (support), you have your village relation, you have all kinds and manner of people. There are those who will mean well for you, there are those who will not mean well for you.

“Now you just came to office, somebody now comes, yes he is trying to support you. Must it be his name? Why not try now to put yourself and people know that it is you.

“Yes, you came through him but it is now you; all kinds of manner of things. Some will even go through your wife. Some people will go through your in-laws. So people will go through your father and all kinds of things. So it now behoves on you to sit and say, ‘This kind of advice, where will it lead me to?’

“You have to think well. If you make the mistake which he made by saying that ‘Yes, I can do it alone; those who gave me support I don’t care, I don’t need them.’ Those who didn’t want you will come in. There is no way anybody who didn’t want you to be in a position will want you to succeed.

“Yes, he tried to do it by himself and he wanted to set up his own structure as against the structure that built him. In fact it did not take up to 100 days and we saw it. We said something must be fundamentally wrong. Forget about people who say you were asking him for money. You know one thing in politics is that the moment you disagree on an issue, the only thing you can use to get the support of the people is that they are asking me for money.”

He recalled that as governor (as he then was) he never lost focus which explains why he achieved what he achieved and wanted his successor to build on it in the interest of the state.

“You (referring to one of the journalists) have said here that Nigerians were astonished by me taking 31 days of commission and flag-off, which no governor in this country has ever done. We were focused but you see, he (Fubara) lost focus here.”

Asked if he had asked Governor Fubara for money as has been rumoured in some quarters, he debunked it, saying it is not surprising for people to make such claims when there are issues such as the political crisis that rocked the state.

Wike wondered why he should ask for money when he is FCT Minister with a budget equivalent to that of a governor, saying such argument does not hold water but that he wanted Fubara to stabilise the state and consolidate on his achievements.
