Alleged INEC Breach: Wike’s aide, Lere Olayinka should explain himself – Abati
Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the release of voter registration details allegedly obtained from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s restricted database.
Abati made the call during the “What’s Trending” segment of Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday while reacting to the controversy involving Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.
The controversy erupted after voter registration details belonging to Nollywood actor Emeka Ike surfaced online shortly after he announced plans to contest a House of Representatives seat in the FCT.
The records, shared by Olayinka, were alleged to have originated from INEC’s restricted administrative portal.
Commenting on the development, Abati said concerns raised by members of the public were valid, noting that the portal in question was reportedly not accessible to the general public.
According to him, if the information was indeed obtained from a password-protected backend system reserved for INEC officials, it would raise serious questions about the security of the electoral body’s database.
Abati stated that Olayinka, to the best of public knowledge, is not an INEC official and should explain how he gained access to the information.
He argued that if unauthorized persons could access INEC’s internal database, it would amount to a major breach of privacy and could potentially violate provisions of Nigeria’s Data Protection Act and Cybercrime Act.
Abati said: “People have expressed concern. Their concerns are valid as expressed.
“We’re told that it is a restricted portal open only to INEC officials, password-protected; if you don’t have the password, you cannot get there.
“In other words, it’s not a public website like the IReV portal, where you can go and check details about what’s included by INEC.
“So, if this is a restricted confidential backend, then, of course, it means that the secret database of INEC is open to unauthorised persons.
“Lere Olayinka, whatever, you know, is not an INEC official, to the best of our knowledge. We do not think that being a PA to the FCT minister, you know, gives him the authority to be able to egress in and out of INEC secret database.
“So for that reason, I think those who are calling for an investigation, they are very right, and we ought to know the outcome of that investigation.
“If that secret database of INEC is now open, it should be open to all of us, so that some people cannot have privilege. We should all rig elections if they want to make it public, otherwise it will be a breach of the privacy of the person involved.
“It will even be an offence under the Cyber Crime Act. We have a law, the Nigeria Data Protection Law. We have the Cyber Crime Act. People cannot gain privileged access to what is supposed to be the backend of INEC. It means INEC’s backend is open to everybody, so we call for the investigation. We call for clarification.
“Lere Olayinka himself should explain how he came about this, and you know, the earlier the better, so that the public doesn’t run away with a narrative that they can easily correct because it will then further raise questions about INEC.”
DAILY POST reports that as of the time of filing this report, neither Olayinka nor INEC had publicly responded to the calls for clarification and investigation.

‘No evidence’ — Atiku dismisses Babachir Lawal’s ADC rigging claim

The camp of African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed allegations of manipulation in the party’s presidential primary made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, insisting that no credible evidence was presented to support the claims.
In a statement issued on behalf of the former Vice President by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the Atiku camp described Lawal’s accusations as unsubstantiated and politically motivated.
“Having chosen to malign a democratic process, insult thousands of ADC members nationwide, and make grave allegations without presenting a shred of evidence, it has become necessary to set the record straight,” the statement said.
Lawal had resigned from the ADC on Monday, criticising the outcome of the party’s presidential primary and alleging that the process was influenced. But Atiku’s camp maintained that the exercise was transparent and reflected the will of party members across the country.
Shaibu said the former SGF failed to substantiate his claims. “The truth is straightforward. The ADC presidential primaries were conducted across thousands of wards and produced a clear and decisive outcome. What Mr Lawal has offered Nigerians is not evidence. He has produced no documents, no verifiable facts, no credible witnesses, and no proof whatsoever to support his sensational allegations.”
The statement further questioned Lawal’s consistency, pointing to his acceptance of outcomes in related contests within the party structure. It alleged that he had raised objections only when the outcome did not favour his preferred candidate.
“Mr Lawal has also failed to explain how the very same primary process he now dismisses as fraudulent somehow produced a result he appears perfectly willing to accept in Adamawa State, where his cousin, Omar Suleiman, emerged as the ADC governorship candidate,” Shaibu said.
“Nigerians are entitled to ask whether the process was only credible when it favoured his family and only rigged when it produced a presidential candidate he did not support.”
The Atiku camp also referenced Lawal’s past controversies, including his removal as SGF in 2017 over allegations linked to contract awards in the Presidential Initiative on the North-East, popularly referred to as the “grass-cutting scandal.” Lawal has denied wrongdoing.
According to Shaibu, Lawal’s latest criticisms stem from dissatisfaction with the outcome rather than genuine concerns about internal democracy.
“What appears to have truly unsettled Mr Lawal is not the conduct of the primaries but the outcome. Democracy guarantees participation, not victory. One cannot celebrate democracy when it produces a preferred result and suddenly condemn it as rigged when it does not.”
The statement also condemned what it described as attempts to introduce ethnic or religious sentiments into internal party disputes, warning that such rhetoric was divisive and unhelpful.
Atiku’s camp insisted that the former Vice President remains focused on national issues ahead of the 2027 elections, adding that the ADC presidential contest would ultimately be decided by Nigerians based on governance, economic recovery, and security concerns.

ADC: Babachir Lawal handed Atiku stinging rebuke – Presidency mocks
The Presidency has reacted to the resignation of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, describing it as a setback for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on X on Monday said Lawal’s resignation amounted to a strong rejection of Atiku and the ADC.
“Babachir David Lawal just handed Atiku Abubakar and his captured ADC a stinging rebuke, along with a bitter divorce,” Onanuga wrote while sharing a post by the former SGF.
DAILY POST reports that the reaction followed Lawal’s announcement on Facebook that he had resigned from the party over alleged irregularities in its recently concluded primaries.
Lawal claimed that the primaries at various levels were manipulated in favour of Atiku and his supporters, alleging that election results were altered and that some winners were replaced by individuals loyal to the former vice president.
The former SGF said he could not remain in a party he accused of operating a “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also accused Atiku and his allies of pursuing ethnic and religious interests, arguing that the former vice president’s emergence as a presidential candidate would ultimately strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term.
Lawal further criticised northern political leaders and delegates, whom he accused of supporting Atiku’s emergence despite the region’s economic and security challenges.

Kano PDP backs Jonathan’s presidential bid
The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it supports the presidential ambition of former President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that it respects decisions taken by the party’s national leadership.
The state PDP chairman, Hon. Yusuf Ado Kibiya, made this known on Monday during a press briefing at the party secretariat in Kano, where he addressed internal party matters and recent political developments.
Kibiya said the state chapter had examined the National Executive Committee’s decision on Jonathan’s candidacy and would continue to adhere to the party’s rules and constitution.
“Kano PDP has reviewed the national executive’s decision regarding the presidential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan,” he said.
He added that the party respects the process that led to the decision and supports the right of the national leadership to determine the party’s direction.
“We acknowledge and respect the processes that led to this decision and affirm our support for their right to determine the party’s national trajectory, within the framework of our constitution and legal guidelines,” Kibiya stated.
He also said the Kano PDP would continue to work with other stakeholders to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
“Our regional chapter remains aligned with the party’s broad objectives and will engage in constructive dialogue to advance PDP’s mission across Kano and Nigeria,” he added.
Kibiya called on members to remain united, disciplined, and focused on the party’s objectives.
He also assured supporters that, despite recent defections and political changes, the PDP in Kano remains united and committed to providing strong democratic leadership.
According to him, the party remains focused on democratic values, accountability, and public service, and will continue to play an important role in Nigeria’s politics.
