Fresh FIFA Data Emerges Following Controversial England Goal vs Norway

Published

on

A significant update has emerged amid the ongoing debate over whether England’s equalising goal against Norway in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals should have been disallowed.

Jude Bellingham cancelled out Andreas Schjelderup opener on the stroke of half-time with a superb individual goal. However, replays appeared to show the ball’s trajectory changed after hitting one of the spidercam cables following Orjan Nyland’s goal-kick.

Norway head coach Stale Solbakken said in his post-match press conference, following his side’s 2-1 defeat at the Miami Stadium: “Many on the bench reacted immediately, I was not one of them. I can’t say anything about that because FIFA, if there is no sound in the chip, what can I say against that?

“The ball drops straight down from heaven. I saw another way just then so I also don’t know what happened. I think it’s pretty clear that it did and yeah, it was a strange thing.” Watch footage of the incident below:

In a statement, FIFA said: “Before England’s goal in minute 45+2 against Norway, the sensor in the Connected Ball showed no peak in the ‘heartbeat of the ball’ when in the air, and therefore no evidence that the ball touched the overhead wire and changed the movement of the ball.”

However, further fuel was added to the fire after BBC Sport’s 3D replay technology appeared to back up clams that Nyland’s goal-kick was impacted by one of the spidercam wires. Watch the clip below:

VAR Expert Provides Update

BBC Sport’s VAR expert Dale Johnson has now provided an update after the 3D replay footage went viral.

Reacting to suggestions that the height of the ball impacts how the chip inside the Adidas TRIONDA ball records data, Johnson said: This is not true. There are 16 antennas for the ball signal under the roof. Also, the ‘heartbeat of the ball’, was available at all times. There is a very slight ‘wave’ which is the ball travelling through the air. Plus, the cable cam footage doesn’t shake or move.”

He also showed how the BBC’s 3D replay technology, while impressive, still isn’t perfect. An example of a similar incident incorrectly interpreting the flight of the ball was recorded during the Round of 32 clash between Ivory Coast and Norway.

Johnson then shared a screenshot from FIFA’s connected ball technology which shows there’s “no indication whatsoever” that there was any in charge in the ball’s movement between when Nyland took his goal-kick and Elliot Anderson gained possession.

All the data FIFA have gathered confirms England’s equaliser was legal and there was no reason to disallow it, despite television replays appearing to tell a different story.

England booked their spot in only their fourth-ever World Cup semi-final thanks to Bellingham’s extra-time winner. Thomas Tuchel’s side now face old rivals Argentina at the Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday.

UFC 329 Salaries For Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, Paddy Pimblett

Published

UFC 329 was filled with drama and disappointment as the Octagon saw the return of Conor McGregor. Just as shocking as some of the action in the cage, however, is the financials of the stars after the event’s salaries have been released.

With McGregor returning to the cage for the first time in five years, facing off against Max Holloway, there was more than mere money on the mind.

Heading into the fight, anticipation could not have been higher. The UFC world was seeing the fated return of one of its all-time legends. The pair traded verbal blows in the build-up, with McGregor even snatching Holloway’s sunglasses off his head, adding fuel to a fire that was already burning bright.

Due to the Irishman’s recent absence from the sport, Holloway entered the fight as the favourite. With the American in good form and good shape, it was always going to be an uphill challenge for McGregor to compete.

However, hope was high, and the hype was higher, as fans tuned in to see McGregor’s comeback. Unfortunately, that hype met an anticlimactic end. In the first round, after just 69 seconds, McGregor suffered a TKO defeat after an injury to his knee.

Looking to make a fast start, the Irishman tried to land a leaping kick and ended up blowing out his knee. He suffered what could possibly be a torn ACL, which can take nine to 18 months to recover from. Talks of a trilogy fight had been mentioned, but with McGregor now 37 years old, he may never fight again.

He described the situation as ‘hell‘, but vowed a return.

Paddy Pimblett Destroys Benoit Saint Denis

Elsewhere on the card, Paddy Pimblett made a title claim with victory over Benoit Saint Denis. While McGregor’s fight was over all too soon, Pimblett’s fight ended even earlier.

With just 52 seconds on the clock, the Englishman had Saint Denis in a guillotine choke. The Frenchman, though, refused to tap out and so the referee had to intervene as he became unconscious.

It was the 31-year-old’s first fight since losing to Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title in January, with Pimblett calling for a rematch in the aftermath of his victory.

UFC 329 Fighter Earnings & Pay

Despite losing the fight after just 69 seconds, McGregor is estimated to have pocketed a staggering $32,000,000. His return was always going to come with eye-watering sums, but even so, he has earned unprecedented amounts of money from the fight.

His opponent, meanwhile, took home a measly $5,600,000 in comparison, over five times less than what McGregor took home with him.

On the other end of the scale, there is John Garza, the 23-year-old debutant who suffered defeat and earned the title of the lowest earner of the night after he took home just $12,000.

Alexander Sorloth’s Girlfriend Releases Statement After Online Backlash

Alexander Sorloth’s girlfriend has released a statement after a wave of hateful comments flooded her Instagram posts following Norway’s defeat to England at the 2026 World Cup.

Norway narrowly lost their first-ever World Cup quarter-final at the Miami Stadium on Saturday. They took the lead in the 36th minute through Andreas Schjelderup and then spurned an opportunity to double their advantage before half-time.

Sorloth, who plies his trade with Spanish side Atletico Madrid and has been capped 77 times by Norway, found himself in a two-versus-one situation in the 44th minute after receiving the ball from Martin Odegaard.

Alongside him was Erling Haaland, arguably the best centre-forward in the world, who had already scored seven goals at this summer’s tournament.

Rather than pass the ball to Haaland, Sorloth opted to cut inside and shoot, only for his shot to be blocked. Haaland’s frustration was clear for all to see. Watch a clip of the incident below:

England equalised through Jude Bellingham moments later – albeit in controversial circumstances, with television replays appearing to show the ball hit a spidercam cable and changed trajectory following Orjan Nyland’s goal-kick. Fresh data has now emerged, which appears to confirm the goal was correctly allowed to stand.

Bellingham then sent England through to the semi-finals, where they face Argentina on Wednesday, after scoring the winner in extra-time.

Sorloth Explains Why He Didn’t Pass to Haaland

Speaking to the press after Norway’s World Cup exit, Sorloth explained why he failed to pass to Haaland.

Per GOAL, the 30-year-old striker said: “I take a touch and look up, and then I see that [John] Stones blocks that pass. Then I take another touch, and that is too bad. I wait for him to make a move instead of me making him make a move.

“The only thing I want in that situation there is to pass to Erling. Then it feels like that pass isn’t there, and then I go for the shot.”

Despite Sorloth’s explanation, the reaction on social media has been brutal. So much so that the forward’s girlfriend, Lena Selnes, has released a statement following a wave of awful messages that her and her partner have received.

Selnes posted a screenshot showing a series of hateful Instagram comments, including death threats, alongside the following statement, per The Mirror:

“The World Cup and football bring a lot of joy, but also a lot of hate. I don’t really want to give it any attention, but feel the need to after comments like this.

“Hope everyone can think a little extra before making such comments, regardless of the situation.”

While this summer’s tournament was a success for Norway, with Haaland further cementing his status as a global superstar, the reaction towards Sorloth has cast a dark cloud over their World Cup adventure.

Aston Villa Make Inquiries For 33-Goal Watkins Replacement

Aston Villa scouts have been keeping a close eye on the World Cup and have stepped up their interest in a breakout star.

Villa return to the UEFA Champions League next season and thus want to ensure Unai Emery has a squad ready to compete on all fronts. That has resulted in the scouting team travelling to North America.

Several players have caught the eye during the World Cup and put their names in the shop window. That includes Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, whom the Villans are reportedly finalising a deal to sign from Freiburg, per The Athletic.

Aston Villa Eyeing Mexico Star Quinones

Manzambi could be followed to Villa Park by Mexico attacker Julian Quinones. A report from Sacha Tavolieri of Sky Sports claims that Villa’s management “closely observed” the 29-year-old.

Quinones enjoyed a fine campaign for the co-hosts, scoring four goals and providing one assist in five games. That included a thumping finish in his nation’s 3-2 loss to England in the Round of 16.

Villa have reportedly made inquiries with the Al-Qadsiah forward’s entourage to assess whether a deal is possible. Contacts have “recently intensified”, and this could lead to an official offer being made.

Quinones is an experienced frontman, although he’s never played his football in Europe. He managed a superb tally of 33 goals in 31 Saudi Pro League games last season.

Villa Set For Frontline Overhaul

It’s clear that Emery wants at least one new attacker signed ahead of next season. The Mexican is the latest name to be added to their growing shortlist.

The Villans reportedly hold an interest in Barcelona’s Ferran Torres, whose days at Camp Nou look numbered. The Spaniard boasts a more versatile profile than Quinones and is still only 26.

There has been talk of Villa selling one of their star players to meet UEFA’s spending rules. One name who is linked with a move away is Ollie Watkins, who is reportedly on Turkish giants Fenerbahce’s radar, per the Daily Mail.

If the English striker were to move on, it could pave the way for Quinones to replace him. For now, he is busy representing England at the World Cup and any potential exit will come once the tournament concludes.
