Three people were rescued after sustaining severe injuries in a multi-vehicle accident caused by a truck that reportedly suffered brake failure along the LASU–Isheri Road at Iyana School, inward Igando, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, disclosed this in a statement, saying its officers swiftly responded to the scene, rescued the trapped victims and restored the free flow of traffic after the crash.

According to the agency, preliminary findings showed that the accident occurred when a MACK flatbed truck reportedly lost its brakes, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles.

LASTMA said officers who were on routine traffic patrol in the area immediately activated the agency’s emergency response protocol, rescued the victims, prevented further collisions and managed traffic on the affected road.

The agency added that it worked with officers of the Iba Police Division to evacuate the damaged vehicles and clear the accident scene to prevent further traffic disruption and secondary crashes.

Three occupants, comprising one man and two women, sustained varying degrees of severe fractures in the accident.

LASTMA said the victims were successfully rescued from the wreckage and taken to El-Shaddai Hospital, where they are receiving specialised medical treatment.

The vehicles involved in the crash were identified as a MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota with registration number FGC 80 XE and a TVS commercial tricycle with registration number LSR 604 QP.

The agency noted that its traffic officers remained at the scene throughout the emergency operation, regulating traffic, protecting road users and ensuring the complete restoration of normal vehicular movement after the evacuation.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the professionalism, courage and swift response of the agency’s emergency personnel.

He also advised motorists, particularly operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles, to carry out thorough mechanical inspections before embarking on any trip, with special attention to the condition and efficiency of their braking systems.

“Routine preventive maintenance of critical vehicle components remains indispensable in mitigating avoidable road traffic crashes and enhancing overall road safety across Lagos State,” he said.  

Bakare-Oki further urged motorists to drive carefully, obey traffic regulations and promptly report road emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code, to enable the agency’s emergency response teams to intervene quickly.

A rescue operation by the Kano State Fire Service ended in tragedy after a father and his 15-year-old daughter were recovered dead from an old dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The victims, identified as Abubakar Abdullahi, 45, and his daughter, Fiddausi Abubakar, 15, reportedly fell into the abandoned well on Tuesday evening.

According to the Kano State Fire Service, its Tsanyawa Division received a distress call on 21 July and immediately deployed firefighters to the scene.

However, the service said darkness and difficult conditions prevented rescuers from completing the operation that night.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said an emergency rescue team was later dispatched from the agency’s headquarters to reinforce the operation.

“Upon arrival, the team successfully recovered both victims from the well. They were rescued unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement said.

The Fire Service said the bodies were handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani, for burial arrangements.

Preliminary findings indicate that the teenage girl accidentally fell into the disused well, while her father entered in an attempt to rescue her but was unable to escape.

“The father attempted to rescue his daughter but was also unable to escape, resulting in the tragic loss of both lives,” the statement added.

The Kano State Fire Service expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged members of the public to avoid entering wells without appropriate rescue equipment and trained emergency personnel.

More than 20 suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, have been killed after a precision drone strike by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI targeted one of the group’s logistics and assembly points in the Southern Lake Chad axis.

The development was disclosed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst covering the Lake Chad region.

According to the report, the airstrike was carried out on July 21 at Kila Bariya following credible intelligence indicating the presence of ISWAP fighters and strategic supplies at the location.

A fresh Battle Damage Assessment, BDA, reportedly confirmed that more than 20 insurgents were neutralised during the operation, while several others sustained serious injuries.

“The precision strike targeted a key terrorist logistics and assembly point following credible intelligence on the presence of fighters and strategic supplies in the area,” the report stated.

The assessment also revealed that more than 30 newly acquired motorcycles intended for future terrorist operations were destroyed during the strike.

According to the report, troops equally destroyed a major ISWAP food storage facility stocked with large quantities of beans and other food items allegedly confiscated or forcefully collected from farming communities across the Southern Lake Chad region.

Military sources described the operation as one of the most significant precision air engagements in recent weeks, saying it dealt a major blow to the terrorist group’s logistics and operational capabilities.

“The destruction of the motorcycles will significantly reduce the terrorists’ ability to conduct rapid raids and reinforcement across the difficult Lake Chad terrain, while the loss of the food stockpile will further degrade their capacity to sustain prolonged operations,” Makama added.

Makama reported that the latest strike is expected to affect ISWAP’s operations around Marte, Ngala and Dikwa Local Government Areas of Borno State, where the group has reportedly been attempting to regroup and expand its activities.

The report added that Operation HADIN KAI has continued its sustained air campaign, combining intelligence, surveillance and precision strikes to disrupt terrorist logistics, command structures and freedom of movement across the North-East.
