FIFA have issued a statement via their official website amid unsubstantiated concerns over match-fixing and corruption during the 2026 World Cup.

Spain won this summer’s showpiece international tournament last Sunday after defeating Argentina 1-0 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the game, which was marred by unsavoury full-time scenes involving several Argentina players.

FIFA have launched an investigation after Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala all appeared to be involved in post-match altercations with their Spanish counterparts.

Argentina, the reigning champions following their triumph in Qatar four years ago, were heavily criticised throughout the tournament amid claims they were benefitting from favourable refereeing decisions.

Egypt’s players and manager, Hossam Hassan, fanned the flames of these conspiracy theories following their controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the last 16.

Hassan said: “They want Argentina and Messi to stay in the World Cup for marketing,” while goalscorer Mostafa Ziko claimed the tournament was “rigged” in favour of Lionel Scaloni’s side.

These serious accusations, made in the heat of the moment, were categorically denied by FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer Pierluigi Collina, who defended under-fire French referee Francois Letexier.

“Of course, constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport,” Collina said. “Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials. When this happens, it may provoke reactions that lead to threats against them and their families. This is not right.”

Reports have emerged in the aftermath of Sunday’s final claiming the Argentine Football Association (AFA) are considering taking legal action following the ‘spread of misinformation’ about their players during the tournament.

Meanwhile, FIFA have confirmed that no suspicious betting activity or indications of potential match manipulation were identified across any of the 104 matches played at this summer’s World Cup, which were all monitored in real time.

The statement reads: “The FIFA Integrity Task Force, established to safeguard all FIFA competitions against match manipulation‑related threats, has successfully concluded its FIFA World Cup 2026 operations after monitoring betting markets and on-field activity in real time across all 104 matches.

“During the tournament, FIFA centralised the collection of betting‑monitoring reports and other relevant data and information provided by Task Force members, as well as information received through available reporting mechanisms. This information was subsequently analysed and shared among Task Force members in line with operational procedures.

“The collaborative nature of the Task Force enabled an experienced, coordinated and timely assessment of and response to any alert or indication of potential match manipulation throughout the FIFA World Cup 2026, with each participating member contributing their specific expertise.

“Members of the Task Force for the FIFA World Cup 2026 include the AFC, CAF, Concacaf, CONMEBOL, UEFA, the OFC, the United States Soccer Federation, the Canadian Soccer Association, the Mexican Football Federation, the FBI, INTERPOL, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Council of Europe, the Group of Copenhagen, Sportradar, the International Betting Integrity Association, the United Lotteries for Integrity in Sports, IC360, Genius Sports, the United States Department of Justice, Sport Integrity Canada, the Competition Bureau Canada, the Comisión Federal de Competencia Económica and other independent experts.”

FIFA’s Senior Integrity Manager, Liam Rich, said: “The FIFA Integrity Task Force provided a strong framework during the FIFA World Cup 2026 for sharing intelligence, assessing potential concerns and coordinating a timely response.

“We thank all Task Force members for their expertise and commitment during the competition and we look forward to building on this collaboration at future FIFA tournaments.”

FIFA confirm they will continue working with members of the Integrity Task Force to “safeguard future tournaments”, including next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Last season’s relegation scrap has been put firmly behind Tottenham Hotspur and they are going all out to hand Roberto De Zerbi a team ready to challenge for Europe.

Sandro Tonali arrived from Newcastle United for a club-record £100 million and Mateus Fernandes joined from West Ham United for £85m. Spurs’ transfer chiefs have also refreshed in defence with Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi.

The Lilywhites aren’t done there as they look to add a new attacker to De Zerbi’s squad. Speculation grows over Richarlison’s future and Dominic Solanke’s injury record means he can’t be fully relied upon.

Tottenham Handed New Leao Conditions

Rafael Leao has been on Tottenham’s wishlist for over a month but there has been a gap in valuation between the club and AC Milan. The Portuguese attacker has made clear he wants to leave the San Siro and take on a new challenge.

Spurs face competition from Turkish giants Galatasaray, who are also eyeing Leao. But he isn’t thought to be fully convinced on a move to Turkey, and a Premier League switch might be more enticing.

Italian outlet Calciomercato reports that the North Londoners and Aston Villa have noted down the terms of a potential deal but neither have moved. They are exploring other options as things stand although Milan may have handed them something to ponder.

The Rossoneri are insisting on a €60 million (£51m) asking price, but could be open to a loan deal with easily achievable conditions to trigger an obligation to buy. That might tempt Spurs, who wouldn’t have to pay a transfer fee now and can wait until next summer.

A Loan Could Be Perfect

Leao, dubbed “magic”, has been one of Serie A’s top attacking talents during his time at the San Siro. The 27-year-old managed nine goals and three assists in 29 league games last season.

If it’s versatility that De Zerbi is after, the Portugal international is ideal as he can play out wide and centrally. If there’s a chance of signing him on loan initially, that could prove a clever way to look to further invest in attack amid links to Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi.

The fee itself isn’t too unreasonable given he still has two years left on his contract. He’s the kind of player who can help fire Spurs back into Europe and competing for major honours.

Manchester United haven’t given up on signing Aurelien Tchouameni and the Real Madrid star is one of two midfielders back on the club’s radar.

A move for Tchouameni looked off the cards after the Frenchman reportedly agreed to a new contract that expires in 2031. The La Liga giants haven’t officially announced the extension but he is believed to have put pen to paper.

Even with the 26-year-old seemingly wanting to stay put at the Estadio Bernabeu, United are still checking whether there’s a possibility Madrid could sell. He had been one of Michael Carrick’s top targets to replace Casemiro following the Brazilian’s departure.

Man Utd Back in For Tchouameni

A report from club insider Sully on X claims that United have spoken to Madrid in recent days to make “standard enquiries”. He suggested that INEOS want to make sure that a deal for Tchouameni is now “fully impossible.”

Tchouameni isn’t the only one mentioned, though, as Eduardo Camavinga is included in the reported talks between the two clubs. The French midfielder insisted earlier this summer that he intends to stay at the Bernabeu, but he isn’t a guaranteed starter.

United are planning to make one more midfield signing following the arrivals of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. A holding midfielder is the priority and both Tchouameni and Camavinga fit the profile.

Camavinga joined Los Blancos from Rennes in September 2021 for £34 million, and he had been a fan favourite up until last season. Several disappointing displays, including in the Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, saw him criticised, and he missed out on a place in France’s squad for the World Cup.

Tchouameni joined his fellow countryman in the Spanish capital in July 2022 when he headed to Madrid from AS Monaco in a £85m deal. He remains a key man in midfield, but Jose Mourinho is eyeing Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, which could mean a big-name midfielder makes way.

United’s recruitment team deserve recognition for not being rash and swooping for a Tchouameni alternative if they believe there is still a possibility of landing him. Depending on the response they were given, perhaps that’s why they have yet to make a concrete move for Manu Kone.

The AS Roma man emerged as a prime target after the club pulled out of a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson due to medical issues. Italian media claimed that the Red Devils were preparing a £47m bid but that hasn’t happened amid revisiting possible deals for Tchouameni or Camavinga.

United hold a good relationship with the Spaniards after buying Raphael Varane in 2021 and Casemiro a year later. That could be working in their favour as they try to make a marquee third summer signing.

INEOS have succeeded in keeping their transfer activity as quiet as possible. Tielemans’ arrival came out of nowhere, and perhaps they are in the midst of trying to pull off a similarly shocking signing.
