Carrick Wants Marcus Rashford at Man Utd Next Season
Manchester United‘s Marcus Rashford stance appears to have softened as they try to edge the forwards towards the exit door this summer. Michael Carrick is hoping to build a squad that can compete for one of the top two or three spots in the Premier League next season while also putting together a solid Champions League run.
The Red Devils have started building their squad, snapping up Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos so far, and work is ongoing to add another midfielder, a left-back and possibly a forward. Carrick will get money to spend this summer, but United are said to want to trim their wage bill, which they can do by selling just one player.
Rashford, who spent last season on loan with Barcelona, earns more than £300,000-per-week, and his wage actually increased this summer. The England forward has been heavily linked with an exit, but there has been little movement so far, leading to a softer stance.
Carrick offers olive branch to Rashford
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Carrick will now welcome Rashford back for pre-season when the England forward has returned from his holidays following his World Cup participation.
“Rashford is going to restart the pre-season with Man United,” said Romano. “My understanding is that Michael Carrick is really looking forward to that moment. So Carrick wants to try to work with Marcus Rashford, wants to have the opportunity to reunite with Marcus Rashford. He knows the player, and wants to have a good connection at the beginning of the season. And then let’s see what happens if a good proposal arrives for United and for Rashford, he can still leave the club from now to the end of the season.
“Otherwise, he will have a chance to be part of the Carrick squad and be part of the Manchester United team for the upcoming season.”
Rashford’s may still have options this summer
Rashford doesn’t appear to have many options at the moment, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be come the end of the summer. The forward could yet receive an offer from Barcelona despite the fact the Catalan club passed up their option to buy on the back of last season’s impressive loan spell.
Barca did not activate the option due to concentrating on some of their other business, which included the signing of Karim Adeyemi, and they continue to pursue Atletico Madrid superstar Julian Alvarez. Should they fail in that pursuit, which seems more likely than not at this stage, Atletico could circle back for Rashford, as reported in Spain. Other clubs could also pop up before the summer is over.
Meanwhile, United have a wage problem with Rashford, and even if the ‘outstanding’ England forward does impress Carrick, it’s likely they will need to convince the forward to reduce his wage if they want to contemplate keeping him, especially with the spending we are likely to see at Old Trafford this summer.

Newcastle Emerge As Shock Suitor for Rangers Legend
Newcastle United are interested in signing Rangers full-back James Tavernier, although Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC have now emerged as the frontrunners in the race to land the defender, according to TEAMtalk.
Tavernier left Rangers at the end of last season when his contract expired, having made 565 appearances for the Gers, netting 143 times in the process. The Englishman developed a reputation for contributing to goals at a prolific rate from full-back, and thus, it’s no surprise that several clubs are looking to secure his services on a free transfer.
Interest from England, Turkey and the United States has emerged, and Charlotte FC are now deemed the favourites to seal the deal. Newcastle lost Kieran Trippier this summer and are subsequently in the market for a right-back, identifying Tavernier as a potential option.
Newcastle in Race to Sign James Tavernier
The Magpies will be without veteran full-back Trippier for the first time since the 2021/22 campaign, and Eddie Howe seemingly isn’t willing to begin a new season without a seasoned right-back who can influence the game in the final third.
Tavernier is on Newcastle’s transfer shortlist, and the brother of Bournemouth winger Marcus would replace some of Trippier’s key attributes. The 34-year-old has consistently put up elite numbers at the front end of the pitch, popping up with goals and assists at an unprecedented rate for a defender.
According to TEAMtalk, while Charlotte are in a strong position, the race for Tavernier is far from over. Turkish sides Istanbul Basaksehir, Kasimpasa and Amedspor have all held talks over a potential move and are ‘firmly’ in the race.
However, Newcastle are monitoring the situation and are ready to pounce later in the window, once their squad picture becomes clearer. If signed, they will be bringing a defender who broke the record as the highest-scoring defender in British football history in 2024.
The Tynesiders are undergoing a summer of change regarding their roster, with Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and potentially Bruno Guimaraes all on their way out. The club’s hierarchy are eager to see how their new group of players takes shape over the coming weeks, before committing to a deal for Tavernier.

Newcastle Should Be Able to Attract James Tavernier
Newcastle have had a tough time in the market recently. Guimaraes has informed the club that he wants to leave for Arsenal, Alexander Isak did the same with Liverpool last summer, while Johan Manzambi turned a move to St. James’ Park down earlier this month.
The north-east outfit could do with a win, and Tavernier could provide them with this. The competition for the former Rangers star is stiff, but there’s no reason why Howe shouldn’t be capable of convincing him to join Newcastle.
While the likes of Charlotte and those in Turkey might be able to offer him a lucrative contract, they cannot offer the chance to play in the Premier League or to keep the player in his home country, surrounded by family and friends.

Gianni Infantino’s Letter to Argentina FA Leaks
Following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, Gianni Infantino has sent a letter to the Argentinian FA. His message comes after Lionel Scaloni’s men were beaten 1-0 by Spain in the final.
The Argentines drew a lot of criticism for their efforts against the Spanish, as they played a physical game and did little in attack. Enzo Fernandez picked up a red card, while there were unsporting scenes at full-time when Leandro Paredes, among others, clashed with the likes of Gavi and Eric Garcia.
There were also conspiracy theories that FIFA favoured Lionel Messi’s side throughout the tournament, with some notably refereeing decisions going Argentina’s way. As a result, a petition has drawn more than 23 million signatures as it calls for the Argentines to be banned from future World Cups.
In light of all the drama, FIFA boss Infantino has sent a letter to the President of the Argentine FA, Claudio Tapia.
Infantino’s Strange World Cup Letter
The contents of Infantino’s letter – as reported by the Daily Mail – are quite strange as he praises them for coming second, insisting ‘Argentina won the silver medal,’ before also applauding their ‘professionalism’.
In full, Infantino wrote: “Dear Mr. President, Yesterday, Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the magnificent New York New Jersey Stadium, Argentina won the silver medal of the FIFA World Cup 2026, after an exciting final against Spain. I would like to reiterate my most sincere congratulations for this important new result for Argentine soccer.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will remain in memory as an unforgettable celebration of football, marked by spectacular matches, the irruption of new promises, the presence of the great figures of the sport and the extraordinary atmosphere lived in stadiums full of fans.
“The magnificent performance of the Albiceleste also contributed decisively to making this edition an exceptional event that captivated millions of football enthusiasts around the world.
“Please send my sincere congratulations to all who have contributed to this magnificent result: to the players, to coach Lionel Scaloni, as well as to the coaching and medical staff and, of course, to the many fans who have accompanied and encouraged the team throughout the competition.
“These victories are always the fruit of constant work, professionalism and attention to detail, but also of passion, commitment and love for this wonderful sport. All this augurs a very promising future and, without a doubt, will pave the way for new and great successes for Argentine football.
“I wish you, dear Mr. President, all the best for the next competitions and I hope to see you again very soon. With all my friendship, Gianni Infantino.”
President of the Argentine FA Speaks Out After World Cup Final Loss
While it’s not yet emerged what Argentina FA chief Tapia has said in response to Infantino’s letter, he has addressed the public after watching his team lose the World Cup final. The FA president was keen to praise Spain for their triumph, insisting that they were deserving winners.
Some Argentinians had felt unfairly treated in the final, with a petition earning around 100,000 signatures. It alleged that Slovakian referee Slavko Vincic and the officiating team’s decisions forced the outcome of the match.
However, Tapia has played down any such notion, stating: “We were unable to get past Spain. We couldn’t beat Spain. They were superior, they won fair and square, and we have to acknowledge that.”
He added: “In sports, you also learn by accepting defeats with the same grace with which you celebrate victories. Yes, we lost a final. But it’s also true that this group had just brought immense joy to the country. Argentina had celebrated a match earlier because this team once again demonstrated why it means so much to our people.”

Celtic ‘Intensify Talks’ For Croatian Star Amid Saudi Interest
Celtic are looking to replace Kasper Schmeichel and believe they have found a new number one for Martin O’Neill.
Schmeichel announced his retirement in May due to injury, and the Bhoys have been tasked with finding an heir. The Danish goalkeeper made 88 appearances over two years at Celtic Park, winning the Scottish Premiership twice.
Finnish shot-stopper Viljami Sinisalo played in a 2-2 draw against AC Milan in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. He’s not expected to be the permanent solution between the sticks.
Celtic Advancing For Horkas Amid Saudi Interest
According to Spanish outlet La Provincia, Celtic have “intensified talks” with Las Palmas for Croatian goalkeeper Dinko Horkas. They have been alerted to interest from the Saudi Pro League and thus are stepping up their interest.
The reigning Scottish champions are trying to finalise a deal for Horkas and have held negotiations with the Spanish outfit in Marbella. The 27-year-old has two years left on his contract but is tipped to move on after enjoying an impressive season.
Horkas kept 14 clean sheets in 41 La Liga 2 games last season, helping Las Palmas to a fifth-placed finish. His club aren’t under pressure to sell the Croatian and are aware that he is one of their most important assets.
That said, interest in Horkaš has been intensifying, and Celtic weren’t the only European club eyeing him. Olympiacos, Torino and Levante had also been linked, although none of those clubs advanced as the Scots have.
Should he make the move, he’d follow Kasper Hogh to Parkhead. The club have agreed on a club-record deal with Bodo/Glimt for the Norweigan forward.
Celtic Need to Get it Done
Celtic can’t afford to let the transfer saga rumble on as the new season draws near. O’Neill would want a new number one to familiarise themselves with the club and get to grips with his teammates.
Horkas is an experienced shot-stopper who possesses a six-foot-two-inch frame and could be the answer for the Bhoys. There is always some risk in signing a goalkeeper from abroad, but he is at the right age to adapt well to life at Celtic Park.
There’s no mention of a fee in the report, but one would assume it would be a reasonable price given Las Palmas’ status as a La Liga 2 club. The threat of Saudi Pro League clubs showing interest should lead to a deal getting done soon.
