Financial Expert Drops New Update on Man City’s 115 Charges Case
With the World Cup now over, all focus for English football fans will turn towards the upcoming Premier League season. One key off-field issue which was expected by many to be resolved this summer remains up in the air, however.
Indeed, Manchester City have long been accused of breaching financial rules between 2009 and 2018. These relate to various rules, including failure to provide accurate financial information and accurate reports on player and manager compensation.
The Etihad outfit were initially charged with 115 alleged breaches of FFP back in February 2023, but that number increased to 130. A hearing into the charges against the Premier League side concluded in December 2024, but a final verdict has yet to be revealed to the public.
Many felt the outcome would be known this summer, but with it still unclear if Man City are guilty or not, financial expert Stefan Borson has spoken out on the ‘inexplicable’ situation as he provided a new update on the matter.
Speaking to TalkSport, Borson slammed the ‘inexplicable’ delay for an outcome ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season. He was asked to provide an update on the case, and suggested that ‘no decision’ has been made yet:
“The general feeling around the industry is that there’s been no decision yet, as remarkable as that is. 19 months on, 20 months on almost, still no decision.
“Totally unacceptable, of course, beyond all of the parties’ expectations about when they would receive a decision. Broadly inexplicable by any sport of norms in these sorts of matters.”
Borson went on to reference Chelsea’s charges from the FA relating to 74 alleged breaches of rules relating to football agents, which came after they picked up a £10m fine from the Premier League. He noted:
“But these cases are taking a very long time. I mean, you do also have a situation with the Chelsea charges from the FA. That was a hearing that was held in November.
“It was a sanction-only hearing, a very simple hearing and we’re still waiting for that, and that’s been sort of eight or nine months.
“So I don’t really know what’s going on with these cases in terms of the timings and why they’re so elongated, but they’re completely out of the realms of normality. Most decisions are in way before this.”
Man City Spending Suggests They Think They Will Win Case
Borson was then asked to give his thoughts on how he thinks things could play out for Man City, but insisted it was still unclear. He did suggest that the amount Man City have spent in recent times on new signings, stadium developments, and more suggests the Manchester club are confident of being proven innocent.
He said: “I think just in the behaviour of Manchester City, since the hearing itself in particular. The spending and the level of confidence that they’re portraying, the signature of numerous contracts, the fact that a manager was prepared to move from Chelsea, the fact that they’ve built a £400million stadium and facility at one end of the ground.
“Every signal that the club has given in terms of its spending and its putting its money where its mouth is, suggests that they feel that they’ve won.”
He did add, however, “But of course, all of these cases are very difficult to predict because litigation is something that even the best cases can lose and you should never be too certain about the outcome of any of those cases.”
Borson’s concluding comments were to predict Man City to win the case, noting: “It’s more likely that City will prevail given the behaviours and given the face that what’s alleged is inherently unlikely.
“But of course, if they’ve done it, as I’ve said many times, the punishment will be extremely severe and this won’t be about transfer bans or things around the edges. If everything is proved against City, the sanctions will be severe.”

Winners And Losers From Man Utd Signing Youri Tielemans
Manchester United have completed the £35million signing of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, as Michael Carrick’s summer transfer plans heat up.
The Red Devils had endured a slow start to the window, and their fanbase was sent into meltdown when a move for long-term target Ederson collapsed at the eleventh hour. While a deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos was sealed, the Atalanta star was supposed to be the marquee midfield acquisition to replace Casemiro at Old Trafford.
However, the north-west club’s hierarchy quickly pivoted to an alternative in Tielemans and it represents an astute piece of business from the much-maligned recruitment department at Old Trafford.
With that said, GIVEMESPORT has taken a look at the winners and losers of Tielemans’ move to Manchester United.

Winners from Man Utd signing Youri Tielemans
Bruno Fernandes
In the first half of last season, before Carrick’s arrival, Bruno Fernandes was forced back into a deeper role under Ruben Amorim. While the Portuguese midfielder still found a way to be productive in this position, his game went up a level when he was pushed further forward in the latter half of the campaign.
Part of the reason Amorim insisted on using Fernandes in a double pivot was that United lacked midfield ball progression without his passing from deep. The former Sporting CP boss used his captain as a way of getting the ball up the pitch because United lack passers in the rest of their squad.
With Tielemans in the team, Fernandes won’t need to be tasked with dropping deep to progress the ball and can instead focus on finding space in the final third and creating shots for his teammates. The 29-year-old Belgium international is exceptional at breaking lines with his passing, and this should lend itself to forging a partnership with Fernandes, who is adept at positioning himself to receive passes like this in the final third.
If there’s anybody in United’s squad who will benefit from finally having an excellent midfield passer, it’s the team’s skipper.
Kobbie Mainoo
While Kobbie Mainoo has an abundance of useful attributes, progressive passing is not one of them. The England international struggles to get his foot on the ball and break lines or play aggressive switches.
Since breaking into the first team at Old Trafford, the youngster hasn’t had anyone to play alongside to take this burden. Tielemans can certainly do this, allowing Mainoo to focus on his primary skills, such as his ability to retain possession under pressure, his dogged defensive work and his intricate movements with the ball in the final third.
The 21-year-old has been crying out for a metronomic playmaker to partner with at the base of United’s midfield, and he may finally have that.
Losers from Man Utd signing Youri Tielemans
Andrey Santos
While Santos was probably aware that he was arriving at United to fulfil a squad rotation role, at least for the immediate short-term, he probably didn’t anticipate being ousted this quickly by a new marquee signing.
On top of this, Tielemans’ set of skills is so unique in United’s squad, and so different to Santos’, that the Brazilian has already been made somewhat redundant. The ex-Monaco man’s ability to progress the ball through passing will quickly become essential to Carrick’s side’s build-up, and this will make him undroppable from the outset.
Thus, Santos will have one less player Carrick can trust to swap him in for, for any given game. The new signing from Chelsea doesn’t provide any of the on-ball value that Tielemans does, and Carrick therefore can’t simply bring him in for the Belgian without United losing significant value to their build-up.
Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire is one of United’s best passers from deep. However, this quality will be much less valuable with an even more prolific progressive passer playing slightly ahead of him. Not only will this potentially lead to the centre-back being less appreciated for his efforts in United’s team, but it also may mean Carrick is less willing to pick him consistently.
If Maguire’s defensive work isn’t up to scratch, then the United boss has less of a reason to select him, as his passing quality won’t be as valuable with another player providing it to a higher level. To make matters worse for the Englishman, Tielemans’ own defensive work, and ability to cover ground, is often considered his biggest weakness.
The ex-Leicester City playmaker lacks athleticism, and the midfields he’s part of are often carved through with relative ease if he’s not paired alongside a doggish, physically imposing, defensive midfielder. United lack this profile in their squad currently, meaning Maguire is likely to suffer as he’ll have more ground to cover and be left more exposed by the lightweight midfield in front of him.
Lisandro Martinez
For similar reasons to Maguire, Lisandro Martinez may be hindered by the signing of Tielemans. Like his English counterpart, his passing from the ball is all of a sudden less valuable, while he’ll be left more exposed in transition by Tielemans’ lack of athleticism.
However, where Martinez may suffer more than Maguire is the reduced physicality and aerial ability in front of United’s back four. Last term, Casemiro’s size and power in aerial duels helped cover Martinez’s relative lack of size and failure to win balls in the air.
Tielemans alongside Mainoo is a significantly inferior midfield in this specific aspect of the game, and this could leave Martinez vulnerable if the opposition has a big striker they want to hit directly.

Javier Mendez on McGregor Injury, Makhachev vs Garry at UFC 330
Islam Makhachev’s head coach Javier Mendez has admitted that he felt sorry for Conor McGregor after he suffered a serious knee injury in his return at UFC 329, while speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT.
The legendary Irishman returned from a five-year layoff to take on Max Holloway earlier this month but tore his ACL and meniscus with the first kick he threw and struggled to stand, before the fight was called off after just over a minute of the first round.
McGregor has since vowed to return after undergoing surgery, and is pushing to be back in contention for a fight in the summer of 2027. But at that point, the former two-weight simultaneous world champion will be nearing his 39th birthday, and Mendez told GMS that any return will be much harder now.
“There’s no secret that I’m not a big fan of his, but I’m a big fan of any fighter that trains hard and is able to go out there and showcase what they trained hard doing,” he said.
“I don’t like what I saw. I didn’t like it. I felt bad for the guy because he deserved to go out on a win or die with his best effort out there, not like this.
“My heart will go out to any fighter that trains hard and then goes out like that. He deserved better, in my opinion.
“Whether he comes back or not will be on him. It’s going to be harder now, because now he’s got so many more demons he has to deal with, so it will be up to him to see what he wants. He didn’t have to come back for this fight, and he did, after a five-year layoff.
“He was rusty, had broken shins, and was accustomed to the rich lifestyle that he was living. And to go back down to training, like in the movie Rocky, right? When he got fat, and he was in a rich lifestyle, he went down below to go back to the grunt, and he was successful.
“But in this case. It was the same scenario, but he wasn’t successful because his body failed him.”
Mendez: Makhachev May Strike with Machado Garry
Mendez is the founder of Team AKA (American Kickboxing Academy), and has been the head coach for a number of UFC superstars including Daniel Cormier, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and now Makhachev – who is the reigning welterweight champion of the world.
The Dagestani fighter will defend his championship for the first time on August 15th, when he takes on Irishman Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in the main event, with many people speculating that it will be a classic ‘grappler vs striker’ battle.
But when asked by GIVEMESPORT what the biggest advantage the challenger has over the champion, Mendez revealed that there is currently no game plan in place, as they need to wait to see how things play out in the octagon first.
“Ian Garry’s biggest advantage is his range,” Mendez said. “His ability to use his range well with his kicks – as well as his scrambling and takedown defences. We’re going to have to see what we can do once we are in the octagon.
“Islam is well-rounded, so he is able to adapt to anything. It’s hard to say right now but come fight night we will be able to dictate what openings we can find and go from there. I would love to say, ‘we are going to take him down.’
“Until we see Ian Garry’s timings we won’t know. We might not even have to take him down, we could just strike with him.
“Ian Garry is no slouch in the stand-up, but neither is Islam. Garry can’t think he can go in there and do whatever he wants in the kickboxing arena. He has to be careful otherwise Islam will take him out.”
Mendez: Prates The Biggest Threat to Makhachev
Alongside Machado Garry, the welterweight division is considered to be one of the most stacked in the organisation at the moment, with a host of top stars vying for a title shot.
Michael Morales and Carlos Prates are among the two with the biggest claim to being next in line, and when asked who in the division poses the biggest threat to Makhachev’s crown should he be able to get past Machado Garry at UFC 330, Mendez answered with no hesitation.
“The next one I’m gonna have to say is probably Carlos Prates,” he said.
“He is the more skillful of the two [Morales and Prates]. Morales is stronger and probably hungrier, but he’s more reckless, so we just have to watch out for the haymakers with him. But Prates would be the next more dangerous guy.
“I feel he is more polished with his striking ability and using his height right. He may not have the striking edge or the grappling edge, but he is strong. He’s very strong.
“So, that’s where you have to be careful with a young lion like him. These guys are formidable, very formidable. But we have to get through them, and I believe Islam will get through all those guys, and I think he looks forward to showing who’s the king, and he’s going to maintain that.”

Man Utd Increasingly Confident of Signing ‘One of the Best Midfielders in the World’
Manchester United are increasingly confident in their ability to sign Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, according to BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone.
Tchouameni has plied his trade at the Bernabeu for four years, helping Los Blancos to a Champions League and La Liga triumph in that time. Jose Mourinho arrived in the Spanish capital earlier this summer and was reportedly keen on keeping hold of the defensive midfielder, but this stance has now changed due to the Spanish giants’ pursuit of Manchester City’s Rodri.
Real Madrid are plotting an audacious move for Rodri, and they may need to sanction Tchouameni’s departure to raise funds and create room for the World Cup winner.
United have emerged as the frontrunners for Tchouameni, having tracked the Frenchman for some time now, and believe they are well-placed to pull this deal off in the coming weeks.
Man Utd Increasingly Confident of Signing Aurelien Tchouameni
United are in the process of rebuilding their midfield this summer. Youri Tielemans has arrived for £35 million from Aston Villa, while Andrey Santos has joined from Chelsea for £50 million.
This rebuild has been a long-time coming, although the need for it has arguably been exacerbated by the departure of Casemiro and the serious injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte during the World Cup.
Tchouameni, described by Monaco coach Robert Moreno as ‘one of the best midfielders in the world‘, has been made the priority target, although early indications from the Real Madrid camp were that the 26-year-old is not for sale.
This saga has now developed, however, with Los Blancos turning their attention to signing Rodri. Credible reporter Simone Stone has revealed that there is an ‘element of positivity’ around United’s chances of landing Tchouameni.
“It is sounding like there is an element of positivity around Manchester United’s chances of signing Real Madrid’s France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni,” he said.
It remains to be seen what sort of fee it would take for the Red Devils to pry Tchouameni to Old Trafford, although £85 million, the sum Real Madrid spent on the midfield anchor back in 2022, has been mooted.

Aurelien Tchouameni Saga is Great News All Around for Man Utd
The reporting seems to suggest that Tchouameni’s move to United is still dependent on Madrid securing Rodri’s signature. Given City have invested £116 million in Elliot Anderson, it does seem plausible that they might be willing to cash in on their talismanic, but ageing and injury-prone, midfielder.
Tchouameni has the perfect set of tools to complement the existing midfielders at United. Alongside playmaker Tielemans, who will provide the progressive passing from deep, the France international can focus on what he does best — disrupting the opposition’s attacks.
Meanwhile, if the deal materialises, City will have lost Rodri — a huge blow for the Red Devils’ major rivals. Anderson’s presence may not be sufficient to cover for the loss of the Ballon d’Or winner, meaning the Citizens may well struggle in the short-term.
