The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Ogun State has dismissed reports that its Ogun East Senatorial District structure has collapsed into the All Progressives Congress, APC, in support of Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, describing  the claims as false and misleading.

DAILY POST reports that news circulated on Monday, alleging that the ADC Ogun East Senatorial District structure during the weekend decamped to the APC to work for the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Yayi.

Mr Erinle Opeoluwa, ADC Chairman in Ijebu North East, said the defectors chose to align with Yayi because they were weary of opposition politics, which he claimed had yielded no results for them in three election cycles, leaving many of them worse off in Ogun State.

DAILY POST gathered that Opeoluwa and nine other chairmen dumped ADC for APC.

The other individuals are Kazeem Adebanjo of Ijebu North LGA, Dehinsilu Olusegun of Ikenne LGA, Gbade Oluwasegun of Ijebu Ode Shittu Titilola of Ijebu East LGA; Omooba Kazeem of Sagamu LGA; Adegoroye Osubukola of Remo North LGA; Salisu Abdulwaheed of Odogbolu LGA; Ibidunni Adetola, ADC chieftain in Ijebu Ode; and Yemi Macauley, also an ADC chieftain in Ijebu Ode.  

Reacting on Monday, the ADC State Publicity Secretary, Olumide Onabajo, said the report did not reflect the true position in the party.

Onabajo insisted that the party remained “united, functional, and firmly committed to winning the forthcoming elections in the state,” stressing that no collapse of its structure has occurred in the Ogun East district.  

According to the party, the individuals reported to have joined the APC acted “strictly in their personal capacities” and their decisions do not amount to a collapse of the party’s structure.  

“We wish to state categorically that the report is false, misleading, and does not reflect the true position of our party. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun East did not collapse its structure into the APC. The party remains united, functional, and firmly committed to win the forth coming elections in the state.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the individuals reported to have joined the APC acted strictly in their personal capacities. Their decisions do not represent the position of the African Democratic Congress, nor do they amount to a collapse of the party’s structure in Ogun East.

“While we acknowledge the constitutional right of every Nigerian to freedom of association, it is important to state that the decision of these individuals to defect does not constitute the collapse of the ADC structure in Ogun East Senatorial District,” Onabajo stated.  

He explained that a political party’s structure comprises constitutionally recognized leadership, executives, and organs at ward, local government, senatorial and state levels, “not merely individual members or chieftains”.

The spokesman added that ADC structures across the nine local government areas in Ogun East “remain intact, operational, and committed to strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections”.

The ADC image maker accused those behind the report of deliberate misrepresentation intended to create “a false impression of political reality” in the senatorial district.  

He urged members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the narrative, saying the ADC “remains focused, united, and resolute in providing a credible alternative for the people of Ogun State”.

With less than two weeks to the Osun State governorship election, Governor Ademola Adeleke’s campaign team, the Imole Campaign Council, has lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, alleging extensive human rights abuses, politically motivated arrests and misuse of police authority.

The campaign council has called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, to maintain impartiality before, during and after the election. Additionally, it urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure that security agencies are not utilized as tools for political intimidation.

Speaking to the press shortly after submitting their petition at the NHRC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, accused the police of specifically targeting the governor’s supporters in the lead-up to the election.

He stated that numerous campaign supporters have been arrested and held in police custody across the nation without any lawful grounds.

“This morning, we approached the National Human Rights Commission to formally highlight what we perceive as a reckless violation of human rights occurring in Osun State, simply due to the impending election.

“We seek assurance from the Inspector-General of Police to the Nigerian populace, particularly the residents of Osun State, that the governorship election on August 15 will be conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner, and that the Nigeria Police Force possesses the capability to ensure security impartially,” he remarked.

Olajengbesi further alleged that in response to public outcry regarding what he termed arbitrary arrests of opposition supporters, the police authorities initially reassigned the Osun State Commissioner of Police, which resulted in the release of 26 detained campaign members.

He asserted that the officer has since been reinstated in the state following alleged pressure exerted on the Inspector-General of Police.

“We were informed that following the transfer of the Commissioner of Police, he was sent back to Osun State due to threats made against the Inspector-General of Police. If this is accurate, it raises significant concerns regarding the autonomy of the police leadership,” he asserted.

He asserted that there are currently two commissioners functioning in Osun State, one responsible for election security and the other for administrative duties, a situation he characterized as perplexing and potentially damaging to public trust in the electoral process.

The campaign spokesperson further alleged that one of their members, Popoola Alaba, commonly referred to as Alabama, the Accord candidate for the Ijesa South House of Representatives, was unlawfully apprehended while campaigning in Osogbo and later transferred to Abuja.

He stated that the politician is presently being held based on a detention order issued by a Magistrate Court in Dutse, Abuja, concerning accusations of armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

Olajengbesi, however, maintained that no incriminating evidence was found on the politician at the time of his arrest.

“We visited the police facility where he is being held and were told that nothing was discovered on him during the arrest. Nevertheless, an ex parte detention order was secured from a magistrate court without any evidence linking him to the alleged crimes.

“If he has committed any crime, the police should promptly charge him before a competent court. They cannot continue to detain an innocent individual indefinitely under dubious circumstances,” he stated.

He accused the police of manipulating the criminal justice system to intimidate political adversaries, labeling this situation as a perilous precedent that could threaten democracy.

In appealing to the NHRC for an investigation into the allegations, the campaign urged the commission to take immediate action to protect the rights of citizens and political participants involved in the election.

Olajengbesi also urged President Tinubu to ensure that federal institutions maintain neutrality throughout the electoral process.

“The President must prevent the Nigeria Police Force or any governmental body from becoming a tool of oppression. Every Nigerian, irrespective of their political affiliation, is entitled to legal protection.

“The events in Osun on August 15 will serve as a litmus test for Nigeria’s democracy. Security agencies must foster confidence rather than instill fear,” he stated.

In response to inquiries regarding recent comments made by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who claimed that Osun was a “must-win” state for the ruling party, Olajengbesi asserted that the election’s outcome should be determined exclusively by the voters.

“The citizens of Osun will choose their leader through their votes. Democracy is fundamentally about the people’s will, not political assertions. We are confident that Governor Ademola Adeleke remains the preferred choice of the majority in Osun,” he remarked.

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged discrepancies in credentials submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC by President Bola Tinubu.

The activist, who addressed journalists on Monday, claimed that the university certificate Tinubu submitted to the electoral body ahead of the 2027 elections differs from the one he presented in 1999 when he contested and was elected governor of Lagos State.

Sowore warned Nigerians against voting individuals who have no verifiable academic records.

“The APC candidate only presented a paper from Chicago State University, which was different from the paper he presented in 1999,” he said.

INEC on Friday published credentials and other details of all presidential candidates vying for the country’s top job.

There has been widespread outrage over President Tinubu’s missing primary and secondary school certificates, raising fresh questions about his educational qualifications.
