A damning new report this week has shed light on a second shocking plan Gianni Infantino backed before his failed plot to sell stakes in the World Cup. The FIFA president is desperately clinging to power, having already been forced into a U-turn over those proposals.

Fierce backlash continues to come his way, with UEFA among his strongest critics. Aleksander Ceferin has spearheaded a campaign that has seen several European nations – including England and Wales – withdraw their written support for the Swiss millionaire. That shift could leave Infantino vulnerable ahead of the crucial FIFA elections in March.

Any hopes of an early resignation were dismissed on Wednesday night after a World Cup crisis meeting in Morocco. FIFA officials gathered, apologised, but ultimately failed to deliver the change much of the football world had been demanding.

Infantino’s controversies, however, do not begin and end with his money-making scheme this summer. His close relationship with Donald Trump has also come under scrutiny, while a fresh report now alleges the 56-year-old was heavily involved in another failed attempt to completely reshape football back in 2021.

News broke in April 2021 of the 20-team league proposed to shake up club football. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham all signed up to the closed-shop division at the time, but were made to quickly retract their support when protests across the Premier League saw the plot collapse and scrapped. At the time, FIFA president Infantino told UEFA’s congress:

However, according to The Guardian, shocking files now allege he was very much part of the breakaway rebellion. The report claims a term sheet – usually an indicator to a ratified and definitive contract – dated October 2020 suggests naming the new league with FIFA’s branding.

The report also suggests football’s governing body were willing to sideline its member associations in pushing plans to alter international windows and bypass federations over Club World Cup proposals.

The Club World Cup would have been staged annually and directly connected to the new Super League, with FIFA referred to as ‘WO1’ – a term used for high-ranking officers in the British army – in the documents.

A common theme among FIFA’s most controversial ideas is that they are done not with the intention of improving football, but with the self-fulfilling desire of adding more money to their own pockets.

The European Super League proposal was no different, with the idea being that FIFA would be “granted a preferred equity stake in the Super League”, thus ensuring the power to make decisions on format and calendar changes plus the appointment of a chief executive and distribution of funds.

The Sun have contacted the organisation about the new revelation, and FIFA reportedly replied by sending links to articles posted in 2021 including Infantino’s comments to the UEFA congress and a signed statement from the FIFA boss, plus the presidents of the six continental confederations refusing to recognise any unaffiliated, rival competitions – information that is now dubious.

ESPN released their final list of the top 100 athletes of the 21st century back in 2024. Voted for by over 70,000 ESPN contributors, the top 100 was officially decided.

Those who took part in the voting were instructed to only consider the achievements of the athletes from the year 2000 onwards. As well as this, the list is not limited to any gender or sport, resulting in a list filled with variety and talent.

With such a deep pool of athletes to choose from, there are undoubtedly some highly prolific athletes who have missed out on the top 10. Some of the most notable omissions include the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewis Hamilton, and Rafael Nadal. However, the following list of names has been considered the best among voters.

The highest-ranking woman on the list is a sporting icon and will go down as one of the most influential women – not just in tennis, but in the world.

Sister of Venus, Williams is a 23-time Major champion, which is not only astonishingly brilliant, but the second-most of any tennis player. Altogether, the tennis icon secured a grand total of 73 titles across her professional career.

Topping the list is Olympic superstar Michael Phelps, who – throughout his illustrious career – enhanced swimming’s reputation by bringing plenty of eyes to it. The remarkable 28-time medallist made history on numerous occasions as he conquered the Olympics through what he does best: travelling quickly in the pool and becoming widely recognised as one of the most dominant athletes of all time as a result.

Out of his 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them are gold, making him the most decorated Olympian of all time. As well as this, Phelps holds the record for the most gold medals at a single Games, notching up eight in Beijing in 2008. Out of his eight races, Phelps broke records in seven of them, making him one of the most impressive-to-watch athletes since the start of time.

Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Tottenham Hotspur‘s interest in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and explained what needs to happen for a deal to take place.

Spurs are eyeing Gakpo as an option to bolster Roberto De Zerbi’s attack and the Dutchman’s future at Anfield is uncertain. The Reds are on the lookout for a new left-winger and have been pursuing Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.

Gakpo has four years remaining on his contract but could depart if Barcola arrives before the summer transfer window closes in September. A move to North London is a realistic possibility and there has been contact between the Lilywhites and the player’s camp.

Tottenham Hold Talks With Gakpo’s Camp

Romano confirmed talks between both parties while delving into Gakpo’s situation on his X account. He wrote: “Tottenham are in direct talks with Cody Gakpo’s camp over possible move this summer, after approaches revealed in July.”

Gakpo has been with Liverpool since January 2023 and, in that time, has won the Premier League title and Carabao Cup. Last season, he made 52 appearances across competitions, scoring nine goals and providing six assists.

The 27-year-old came in and out of Arne Slot’s starting lineup as the season progressed due to inconsistent form. The Reds’ decision to target Barcola could lead to the Dutch attacker’s departure.

Romano explained: “Deal depends on Liverpool decision; doors closed back in July but now could depend on financial package/Barcola pursuit.”

Spurs are also eyeing Manchester City winger Savinho and could bring both the Brazilian and the Liverpool forward to North London. They have already spent £237 million on six new signings, including Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali, who arrived from Newcastle United for £100m.

A Risk That Might Pay Off For De Zerbi

Gakpo has yet to show a desire to leave Anfield, but with Liverpool’s interest in Barcola growing, it might not be too long until he is considering an exit. At this stage of his career, he’ll want regular game time and a starting role.

There’s much for De Zerbi to like about the former PSV Eindhoven star, including his versatility. He can play out on the left and as the focal point of his team’s attack.
