8 Favourites to Replace Arne Slot

Published

on

A few months ago, had you told any Liverpool fan that Arne Slot would be under pressure, they likely would have laughed in your face. Fresh off winning the Premier League during the Dutchman’s debut campaign, the Reds spent heavily to reinforce their squad with elite players, including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

But a week is a long time in football, and the situation at Anfield has deteriorated rapidly. The Merseysiders have lost four consecutive Premier League games in a row, with the 5-1 drubbing of Eintracht Frankfurt their only win in six. Following their 3-2 loss against Brentford, they are seven points behind league leaders Arsenal, and while reports indicate that Slot is not under internal pressure at the club, that could change if form continues to spiral.

Should the unthinkable happen and Slot is shown the door, there will be a queue of managers waiting to take the reigns. But who are the favourites to replace the current Liverpool boss? The Sun have compiled the managers with the best odds on Betfair to show exactly who is leading the charge.

8

Jose Mourinho

Odds – 25/1

jose mourinho

From the infamous Champions League clashes to running down the touchline after Chelsea dealt a hammer blow to Liverpool’s title aspirations in 2014, Jose Mourinho has been involved in some memorable clashes against the Reds over the years. Yet this appointment feels incredibly unlikely.

For one, there have been numerous flashpoints between both parties, which means that the relationship between both groups isn’t necessarily on the best of terms. But more importantly, the Portuguese head coach has only recently taken up a post at Benfica, so chances of him leaving his present role so soon after joining are very slim.

7

Xabi Alonso

Odds – 16/1

You could make a similar point for Xabi Alonso as you did for Mourinho. The Spaniard had been linked with the Anfield post before Slot’s arrival in 2024, but remained at Bayer Leverkusen for an extra year. He has only recently replaced Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid and is targeting a La Liga title in his first year at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Yet while current chances are slim, a door could open for Alonso to return to Liverpool later in his managerial career. After all, he spent five years at the club, becoming a fan-favourite for his spellbinding performances in the engine room. The romanticism of him taking up a place in the dugout is just too good to ignore.

6

Pep Lijnders

Odds – 10/1

Pep Lijnders

If you’re going to make a mid-season change, who better to turn to than someone who knows the club like the back of their hand? Pep Lijnders had two spells at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, acting as his assistant coach and playing a part in the club’s successes in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Unfortunately for the Dutchman, there are a few factors which mean his odds are only 10/1. He has only recently joined Manchester City, where he is assisting Pep Guardiola. But more importantly, his spells as a manager at both NEC Nijmegen and Red Bull Salzburg didn’t go especially well, with him sacked by the Austrian club just months into a three-year contract. That will definitely be a warning sign to the Liverpool hierarchy.

5

Jurgen Klopp

Odds – 9/1

Jurgen Klopp

Besides, if you were going to appoint someone who knows the club well, it would make far more sense to move for Jurgen Klopp. The German manager enjoyed a phenomenal nine-season spell at Anfield, turning the Reds into one of the best teams in both England and in Europe as they lifted a sixth Champions League and a first Premier League in 20 years.

What makes this potential appointment even more enticing is that the 58-year-old recently refused to rule out taking charge of his former club again in an interview. He told The Diary of a CEO podcast: “I said I will never coach a different team in England so that means, if [I did return], then it’s Liverpool. So, yeah, theoretically it is possible.” That has put his odds at 9/1, although it would be remarkable to see him back at Anfield so soon after leaving.

4

Julian Nagelsmann

Odds – 7/1

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann biting his nails

Much like Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann was considered by the club’s hierarchy when they were searching for a successor to the aforementioned Klopp. However, the German elected to remain at his post with the German national side.

The former RB Leipzig boss has often received rave reviews for his tactical intelligence, attracting interest from multiple clubs through the years. So, should Liverpool need someone who can incorporate Wirtz, Isak, Ekitike and Mohamed Salah into one team, then Nagelsmann could very well be the man they need. Unfortunately for the Reds, he signed a contract extension with Die Mannschaft in January 2025, which will keep him in his current post until the end of Euro 2028.

3

Zinedine Zidane

Odds – 9/2

Zinedine Zidane
Zinedine Zidane

As one of the greatest players of all time, one thing that Zinedine Zidane would do is command the respect of all players in his squad. But, arguably even more importantly, he would bring a winning mentality. The French international won two league titles during his first spell at Real Madrid, as well as three consecutive Champions League trophies – quite the resume.

To make matters even more interesting, Zidane remains out of work, having not managed since leaving Los Blancos in May 2021. And he’s spoken about his admiration for Liverpool’s stadium, stating that Anfield was the best stadium that he played in. It feels like it could be the perfect opportunity for the 53-year-old to return to coaching.

2

Andoni Iraola

Odds – 4/1

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola watching on from the touchline

Should Liverpool wish to appoint a current Premier League manager, though, then Andoni Iraola is certainly likely to be on their shortlist. The Spanish head coach has turned Bournemouth into a fearsome side for English teams, with them playing an exciting brand of football and picking up results against clubs much bigger in stature.

Presently, the Cherries are flying in the league, lying in the top four spots despite losing key players during the summer transfer window, including starting centre-backs Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi. Iraola currently has odds of 4/1 to move to Liverpool, but even if that doesn’t happen, it feels as though it’s a matter of time until another behemoth pinches him.

1

Oliver Glasner

Odds – 3/1

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner watching on

If Slot is fired though, the most logical appointment for Liverpool to make is arguably Oliver Glasner. Since arriving at Crystal Palace in 2024, the Austrian manager has brought a new lease of life to an Eagles side which sometimes lacked inspiration under Roy Hodgson. He’s the mastermind behind two of Palace’s most incredible achievements in recent memory, winning the FA Cup in 2025 before beating Liverpool back at Wembley to win the Community Shield.

However, what makes him favourite for the job is his availability. Glasner’s future at Selhurst Park remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, meaning that his head could be turned should Liverpool come knocking. If Slot does go, then watch this space.

Why is Djed Spence Wearing a Face Mask?

Published

By

Djed Spence has been a frequent starter in England’s World Cup campaign, especially since being the only available right back following a Reece James injury.

The Spurs fullback has stood out on the pitch, not just for his performances, but also for the protective face mask that he’s been wearing throughout the tournament. It’s a look that naturally sparks curiosity.

Here is the reason why Spence has been wearing the protective mask.

Why Is Djed Spence Wearing the Mask?

Spence’s face mask is the result of a minor facial fracture sustained in the weeks leading up to the tournament. The 25-year-old was involved in an aerial duel with Chelsea striker Liam Delap, whose elbow clashed with Spence, although he was able to continue through until the end of that particular game.

Spence took to social media following the game to complain about the challenge with Delap, perhaps unhappy with the Chelsea striker’s aggressive antics resulting in Spence breaking his jaw.

Just five days later, Spence took to the field for Tottenham wearing the face mask, as Spurs secured their Premier League safety on the final day of the season with a win against Everton.

A broken jaw can normally take three months to heal, and with Spence wanting to feature in the World Cup, he opted to wear the custom-fitted jaw guard throughout the competition, as well as in training sessions.

Spence told the BBC: “It is a little bit uncomfortable, but it is what it is. I have a broken jaw, so I have to wear it throughout the tournament. It is something I will have to get used to. It will be three months until it is fully healed, so it is a long time. It was painful, but luckily I play football with my feet and not my jaw.”

“It was a crazy challenge, but it is in the past now. I’ve just got to focus on this tournament now.”

How Does the Mask Help?

The mask’s primary function is simple: to offer protection. It shields the affected area from direct blows, accidental elbows, and the kind of incidental contact that can occur during high-tempo matches.

It also offers Spence psychological support, as he might have been hesitant to go into duels without a protective mask, but the guard now reassures him to commit fully. The moulded fit also keeps the affected area stable, reducing the risk of sudden pressure or movement that could worsen the fracture.

It also, of course, means Spence can still play, as without the mask he might have been forced to miss the tournament entirely.

Whilst the mask can feel unfamiliar at first, it shouldn’t affect Spence’s game, and he will be able to adapt quickly. Spence’s performances so far haven’t shown that this new mask is affecting him, putting in consistent performances in the place of injured Reece James, and it leaves Thomas Tuchel with a selection headache for when he has a fully fit right-hand side operating again.

US Icon Brad Friedel Blasts Mexico Ahead of England Match

Published

USA legend Brad Friedel has caused a huge stir with comments he’s made about Mexico ahead of their World Cup clash with England on Sunday night. The retired goalkeeper appeared on the latest episode of ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, where he discussed the crunch Round of 16 tie with Joe Cole and Gary Lineker.

The fixture was set up after El Tri became the first nation since Italy in 1990 to win their first four matches of the tournament without conceding a single goal. Their latest victory came via a comfortable 2-0 win over Ecuador, with Julian Quinones and Premier League striker Raul Jimenez on the scoresheet.

Mexican media are now confident they can beat England, pointing to the Three Lions’ sluggish 2-1 comeback win against tournament minnows DR Congo as evidence of vulnerability. The Azteca Stadium atmosphere, heat, and altitude are all expected to play a major role, and there is every reason for belief that they can extend their impressive Mexico City record to 89 matches, having lost only twice.

Brad Friedel Blasts ‘Average’ Mexico Ahead of England Round of 16 Tie

There’s even fear among the English population that conditions in Mexico make a win against the Latin American country pretty much mission impossible. However, Friedel has taken a completely different view of things, branding Thomas Tuchel’s next opponents ‘average’ despite their impressive record up until now. He said (watch the full segment):

“Mexico are so average! I played against them for a few years, I know what they do. Because they are playing in altitude, they look faster than everybody else. [But] they’re an average team. Below average actually. They’re so beatable.

“If England go there, I don’t care if they play a low block, a high block, anything, just get through the first 15-20 minutes, and they will win the game. Just don’t concede the first goal. What they try to do is suffocate you, so you can’t get your second breath.”

He continued: “Just look at their games, they’ve created five chances in each of them. But the players are dead after 20 minutes because they are always playing this uphill battle. The altitude is no joke, the heat is no joke, it’s hard. But England are so much better than Mexico. It would be a complete shame if they were knocked out by altitude.”

Friedel’s comments went down well with a lot of Americans, who loved to see his fighting talk. Besides them, however, he has come under scrutiny, with one X user remarking: “What is this man saying. If they are so average, why would you say don’t concede first? Clearly, he hasn’t watched any of their games.”

A second continued: “Have you watched England’s last two performances? You walloper,” as a third labelled him a “Classic American.” Elsewhere, a fourth concluded: “How can you do that? Mexico might win.”

2026 World Cup Hosts Have Overperformed So Far

Heading into this summer’s tournament, Mexico were the only co-hosts who could consider football to be their nation’s favourite sport, with Canada preferring ice hockey and USA’s favourites being the NFL, NBA, and MLB. But the Maple Leafs beat South Africa 1-0 in their Round of 32 fixture, while the Stars and Stripes beat Bosnia 2-0 in theirs.

It’s been a hugely impressive showing from the duo, with the latter now looking like they have an easy route to the semi-finals, which would mark their finest footballing achievement since finishing third in the inaugural 1930 edition, nearly a century ago. Of course, Mauricio Pochettino must be given a lot of the flowers, but it’s clear that the sport’s perception is massively changing stateside too.

Phil Mickelson Breaks Silence on Claims He Showed Penis Photo to Fellow Pro’s Wife

Published

A golfer with six Majors to his name has taken a swing at an article published last week, which claims the seasoned pro had shown nude photos of himself to the former wife of a rival.

It is further alleged that Phil Mickelson, who left the PGA Tour for its controversial rival LIV Golf back in 2022, was thrown out of numerous golf clubs in California due to his conduct toward women, as reported by Skratch.

The article further details which golf courses have supposedly banned the former world number two, with prestigious clubs such as The Farms, The Madison, and The Bridges all said to have rescinded his membership.

The allegations are historic in nature, with Mickelson said to have engaged in friendly texting with Ashley Perez, the ex-wife of another professional golfer Pat Perez, before things reportedly crossed a line with the 56-year-old said to have shown explicit photos of himself to her in 2015.

In describing the alleged 2015 incident, Ashley Perez details the claimed circumstances.

Disturbing Reason Phil Mickelson Has Been Banned From Golf Club

Bombshell reports have emerged about the golf legend.

“Phil says to me, ‘I’m going to leave my bedroom door open tonight. When Pat falls asleep, I want you to come see me.’

“We were staying next door to Phil, and Pat still had to play in the tournament. I didn’t want it to get messy.”

At the conclusion of the 2015 Barclays tournament, Ashley said she had told her then-husband what had transpired, which led to a breakdown in the friendship between Phil Mickelson and Pat Perez.

Mickelson is vehemently denying the accusations, and his lawyer has gone on the attack to dispute the article as one that they view as an “anonymously sourced drive-by shooting.”

In a statement provided to The New York Post, representatives of the three-time Masters winner said: “Mr. Mickelson has never been expelled from a golf club. His membership has never been revoked by a golf club. Those decisions were his alone.”

Hinting at the rift in November 2022 on the Claude Harmon podcast, Pat made his feelings about the incident clear, stating: “I have a different hate for Phil than most people. And people won’t know the story—I’m not gonna go into the story again—but Phil crossed the line with me that is just uncrossable and unforgivable.

“He knows that he screwed up. He apologised for the action, but I cannot forgive him for it.”
