‘I Played With Salah at Chelsea

Published

on

Summary

  • Cesc Fabregas shared a dressing room with Mo Salah during his fleeting Chelsea career, and has since revealed what the Blues’ players said about the Egyptian after he left.
  • Salah’s success after leaving shows Chelsea’s error, as he made a name for himself on loan at Fiorentina.
  • The Egyptian king has since torn the Premier League record books apart with Liverpool.

Chelsea have long struggled to strike a balance between burning through money and knowing when to trust the talent already at their fingertips. If it wasn’t painfully clear from letting Kevin De Bruyne slip through their grasp, then Mohamed Salah’s departure in 2014 serves as another glaring reminder. It’s as if they’ve been throwing a fishing line into a sea of potential, only to reel in empty hooks.

For reasons unknown, the Egyptian international struggled to adapt to life in West London. Under the guidance of the esteemed Jose Mourinho, the quick-footed winger made just 19 appearances for the club, with only two goals and three assists to show for his efforts. This laboured return failed to convince the club’s decision-makers to grant him more playing time, especially in a squad already vying for silverware on multiple fronts.

Interestingly, Salah wasted no time proving he was one of the best in the business since departing Stamford Bridge. A brief loan at Fiorentina quickly turned into a permanent move to Roma, and by 2025, the prolific winger is now seen as a Premier League great after an eighth successive season with 10+ goals and 10+ assists across all competitions, highlighting just how far he’s come. Yet, the question has always lingered: what did his Chelsea teammates think at the time? Thanks to Cesc Fabregas, that mystery has finally been solved.

Fabregas Details Dressing Room Atmosphere Around Salah Departure

Salah’s loan spell at Fiorentina proved to be the making of the Egyptian as he earned regular first-team chances, scoring nine goals along the way. And one strike in particular caught the eye of his former teammates at Stamford Bridge. Fabregas was one of the players in the Blues dressing room at the time, having seen the Egyptian fail to make the grade. But after scoring a wondergoal while with La Viola, Salah was the talk of the town back at his parent club. “He’s a very special talent. I played with him at Chelsea for six months. He is a top guy as well and has a good mentality. I am happy for him as he is a very, very hard worker. He believed in his talent, went away and found his way,” he told the Planet Premier League podcast in January 2024, as per the Mirror.

“Now he is showing everyone how good he is. Maybe it was lack of chances [at Chelsea]. You could see his trends. You could see he was quick. You could see that he was attacking the spaces. But then when he had one against ones, maybe he was not as strong as he is now. He was not so prolific in front of goal. Players need chances, they need someone to believe in you and he’s had that at Liverpool.

“He had that at Fiorentina, where he went on loan for six months to show how good he is. I remember a solo goal he did there as soon as he arrived. We were all in the dressing room ‘Oh my God did you see Mo’s goal? He never did that here!’ We were talking like this.”

Salah Is Now One Of The All-Time Premier League Greats

When his Chelsea teammates were raving about his magical solo goal, there was, of course, an air of hesitation over the fact that it could have been a one-off. But the 33-year-old has now had eight years of producing brilliance on a weekly basis.

Salah eventually left La Viola for Roma on a permanent move in 2016, before making his way to Liverpool a year later. In the time since, the Egyptian has been the heart and soul of everything good for the Reds as they’ve won trophy after trophy.

He was a leading man under Jurgen Klopp, helping to Reds win everything on offer under the German, including the Champions League and a first-ever Premier League title. With Arne Slot taking over in 2024, Salah never slowed down either as he helped guide the club to another league title.

In the 2024/25 campaign, Salah was electric, becoming the first player in Premier League history to hit double figures in both goals and assists before Christmas. Not only that, but he also surpassed Sergio Aguero to become the highest-scoring foreign footballer in Premier League history with 190 goals – this also makes him the fourth all-time top goalscorer of all players in the competition.

Against his former club, Chelsea, the Egyptian has netted eight goals and provided four assists in 24 appearances. He continues to remind his old employers of what they missed by failing to unlock his potential during his time in the capital. While some clubs may be relieved to see certain players go, the Blues will forever regret their decision to part ways with Salah, who is easily one of the best Premier League wingers of all time.

Steve Clarke Ridiculed For Comment About England in Scotland Resignation Letter

Published

on

By

After successfully qualifying for two consecutive European Championships and the 2026 World Cup, Steve Clarke has called it a day at the helm of Scotland, after seven years in charge.

It’s been one of Scotland’s most successful periods. After not qualifying for a major tournament since 1998, some memorable moments have taken place during his time, none more so than the 4-2 win over Denmark, which booked their place at this year’s World Cup.

But there was another moment of apparent victory against a bitter rival that Clarke highlighted in his lengthy resignation letter, which the official X account of the Scottish national team have released, that has everyone talking, and not necessarily for positive reasons.

What Steve Clarke Said About England

Steve Clarke

It hasn’t been the first time he’s been under fire for his comments lately. In the wake of Scotland’s 3-0 defeat to Brazil, which ultimately led to their elimination from the World Cup, Clarke was accused of being “disrespectful to his players” after an interview at full time.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke’s post-match interview after losing 3-0 to Brazil has not gone down well

Among the highlights Clarke chose to reflect on from his seven years in charge was Scotland’s 0-0 draw with England at Wembley during Euro 2020, a result he referenced as one of the standout moments of his reign.

“There was an unforgettable night at Wembley when we more than matched the eventual beaten finalists England and held them to a 0-0 win!”

For many supporters, holding the Auld Enemy to a goalless draw four years ago doesn’t quite carry the same weight as some of Scotland’s other achievements, and the inclusion of that line in such an emotional farewell letter has seen Clarke come in for a large amount of criticism.

Another added: “What an embarrassment, thank god he’s resigned.”

Scotland have produced some true icons of the game and the very best of them have been ranked.

A third questioned how the comment made it into an official statement at all, asking: “How has that gone out on official team channels.”

Others were equally scathing. One supporter posted: “Sums up why he had to go and everything that was wrong with his tenure,” while another called it a “terrible statement by the arrogant person he is.” One fan summed up the disbelief, simply admitting: “Had to check this was the official account and not a parody.”

Oleksandr Usyk’s Last-Ever Boxing Match Will Be Against Deontay Wilder, Says Eddie Hearn

Published

Oleksandr Usyk’s next, and possibly final, opponent has been leaked by Eddie Hearn.

With the Ukrainian now 39 years old, he is approaching the end of his career, and while he has made it clear that he is not yet retiring, his next showdown will be one of his last acts on the boxing main stage.

Usyk has an undefeated professional record of 25 wins and until recently held the WBA ‘super’, WBC, and IBF belts, but on the 26th of June, he announced he would vacate his belts.

“This is a well-considered decision that I am confident will open new opportunities for me. This is not the end of the story. The continuation lies ahead,” he said on X.

In a video message, he added: “I want to vacate all the belts that I currently hold to make them available for the guys next in line to fight for them.

“Friends, I’m leaving the belts but not the sport because I still have my last dance.”

So who will his last dance come against? While it is unclear whether his next fight will indeed be his last, Eddie Hearn did reveal his next opponent.

Speaking on DAZN, the English promoter stated that Usyk’s next fight will be with Deontay Wilder.

“As I understand it, Usyk will fight Wilder next. He wants to do what he wants to do, I guess, and have one more in the sun, and now the contenders are going to get their shots.”

Usyk’s desire to defeat all the major heavyweights of his era led him to choose the American for his next bout. Usyk has already defeated Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Daniel Dubois, and will be keen to add Wilder to his conquered list.

Usyk no longer holds any gold…

The pair were linked with a fight against each other at the start of the year, but the cards failed to fall into place and the American instead set up a bout with Derek Chisora.

The Bronze Bomber had been scrutinsied following back-to-back defeats versus Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, with many speculating his future in boxing was well into its twilight years. However, a comfortable win against Chisora, in conjunction with a record of 43 knockouts, has proven that he still has what it takes to win at the elite level.

Usyk’s most recent fight came against Rico Verhoeven. It was a tough match for the Ukrainian, who was tested all the way, but he eventually came out victorious late on in the 11th round.

With Usyk and Wilder 39 and 40 respectively, their showdown may act as the grand finale for what has been two legendary careers. When the curtain does fall, they will be remembered as two greats of the game. But for now, the show goes on and a clash between Usyk and Wilder is sure to be an entertaining one.

Bastian Schweinsteiger Reacts After He’s Accused of Making Racist Comments

Published

Bastian Schweinsteiger has been forced to defend himself after comments he made about the Ivory Coast ahead of their World Cup clash with Germany were branded racist by their head coach.

The former Germany, Bayern Munich and Manchester United midfielder described Ivory Coast’s style as unpredictable and unorthodox while working as a pundit, remarks that brought a wave of criticism in the days that followed.

Ivory Coast boss Emerse Fae pulled no punches when addressing the comments, leading Schweinsteiger to release a statement explaining what he had actually meant by the analysis.

Fae was quick to give his view on the matter, hitting back after guiding Ivory Coast into the knockout rounds for the first time in their history following a 2-0 win over Curacao.

“We could call it racist, if we were calling a spade a spade.”

Though he added he hoped it was simply a “clumsy statement that’s not necessarily reflective of what’s in his life.”

The issue also drew in Jurgen Klopp, who appeared uncomfortable when pressed on the subject during a broadcast appearance, eventually cutting the interview short.

Bastian Schweinsteiger working as a TV pundit

Schweinsteiger had described Ivory Coast’s approach as “a bit African football, a bit unorthodox, a bit wild, a bit perhaps also not so conditioned by tactics” while appearing on German broadcaster ARD.

World Cup Nation Claim the US ‘Don’t Want to See Our Supporters’ as Visas Denied

The 2026 World Cup has already been pure chaos, and the travel plans of one nation’s supporters torn apart.

The comments quickly drew backlash, with some suggesting he leaned into outdated racial stereotypes. Responding through a statement released by the same broadcaster, Schweinsteiger said:

“I was talking about football, not about people. It’s a football analysis. Nothing more and nothing less. … I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone.”

Including the likes of Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure, the best Ivorian players of all time have been ranked.

Axel Balkausky, ARD’s sports coordinator, defended Schweinsteiger’s stance in a very similar manner. “He summarized his experiences and observations from recent games. It wasn’t about individual people but rather a footballing assessment. I can’t detect any form of racism in that or in his choice of words. If the coach of Ivory Coast, Emerse Fae, were to speak directly with Bastian, his suspicions would be quickly revised, I am sure of that. Perhaps an opportunity of that sort will arise in the course of the tournament.”
