APC aspirant Gyang Zi withdraws from Plateau North primary, demands N10bn damages

For an alleged defamatory publication declaring him “not cleared”, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Plateau North senatorial aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Gyang Zi, has withdrawn from the party’s ongoing primary election, demanding N10 billion in damages.

In a letter addressed to the APC National Chairman and dated May 18, 2026, Zi alleged that the party published his name on social media and on its official X handle among aspirants not cleared for the primary election, without giving any reason.

Zi said the publication was made despite his paying for nomination and expression of interest forms and his participation in the screening process for the Plateau North senatorial district primary.

He explained that the publication portraying him as ‘not cleared’ without justification had greatly injured his reputation, subjected him to public ridicule, and destabilised his supporters and political structure across Plateau North senatorial district and beyond.

According to the letter, “The publication had caused embarrassment to my legal career, political ambition and public standing.”

Pending what he described as an immediate retraction, public apology and compensation from the party, he subsequently announced his withdrawal from the primary election.

Zi demanded N10 billion as damages for alleged defamation, reputational injury and emotional distress, saying that failure to comply with the demand within a reasonable time would leave him with no option but to seek legal redress against the party and all persons connected with the publication.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC had yet to respond to the allegation.

Not right decision – David Mark’s aide faults Obi’s move to NDC

Chille Igbawua, an Adviser to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, National Chairman, David Mark, has faulted Peter Obi’s decision to quit the party. Igbawua, who is part of the ADC Electoral Panel, said Obi should have stayed in the party to partake in the presidential primary.

In an interview with Channels Television, Igbawua said Obi would have gained important lessons, even if he ended up losing to the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Igbawua stressed that the ADC primary created a fair opportunity for all candidates.

Highlighting the results from Benue State, he said it showed that Atiku got about 55,000 votes, Rotimi Amaechi received around 30,000 votes, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen had about 22,000 votes.

“I was there right from the start when we began forming the coalition, and that’s when we chose ADC as our political platform,” Igbawua said.

When asked if Obi might feel relieved about leaving, Igbawua said, “I don’t think he can be grateful, I don’t believe he made the right decision, in my opinion.”

Igbawua emphasized that the coalition was meant to save Nigeria, not for personal gain, and encouraged leaders to put aside their own interests for the benefit of everyone instead of leaving the group when their own needs aren’t fulfilled.

Obi recently left the ADC and is now a presidential hopeful in the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC, days after losing the Delta Central APC Senate primary.

Omo-Agege announced his resignation in a letter dated May 22, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Orogun Ward 2 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The letter read: “I hereby resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress, effective immediately.

“After reviewing recent developments in the party in Delta State and consulting with my associates and supporters, it is clear my political objectives and those of my constituents are better served outside the APC.

“I will not remain a sitting duck in a party where I cannot advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria.

“I thank the party for the opportunity to serve as Deputy President of the 9th Senate. I wish the APC well and request that my name be removed from all membership records, registers, and communication lists.

“My focus remains on delivering development and effective representation for Delta Central, Delta State, and Nigeria. I will pursue these goals outside the APC.”

Better Nigeria still possible despite hardship — ADC in Eid el-Kabir message

The opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians not to give up hope despite worsening economic hardship and insecurity across the country as Muslims celebrate Eid al-Kabir.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the Sallah season comes at a particularly difficult time for many citizens struggling with rising food prices, unemployment and uncertainty about the future.

The party, however, said Nigerians must continue to believe in the possibility of a better country.

“We believe deeply that beyond the hardship and frustration of this moment lies the possibility of a stronger, safer, and more prosperous nation,” the statement said.

The ADC added that Eid al-Kabir symbolises sacrifice, faith, obedience and compassion, stressing that the lessons of the season are especially important for Nigeria at this time.

According to the party, “faith is most meaningful in difficult seasons”, urging citizens not to surrender to despair despite the challenges facing the country.

The party also expressed optimism that Nigeria could still recover and achieve progress with responsible leadership and unity among citizens.

“We believe in a Nigeria where real leadership works for the people, where young people can dream again, where farmers can return safely to their farms, where businesses can grow, and where ordinary citizens can once again live with dignity and hope,” the statement added.

The ADC further called on leaders at all levels to reflect on the meaning of responsibility during the festive period, while praying for peace, healing and unity across the country.

“History has shown that nations recover when citizens refuse to stop believing in a better future,” the party stated.
