NDC primaries: We never imposed candidates on constituencies – Party spokesman

Published

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has denied imposing candidates on constituencies in its recently conducted primary election.

This is contained in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Osa Director, on Thursday.

Director said every aspirant who approached the party was received, attended to, and directed to engage with the appropriate caucus leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots members of the party in their respective states.

He stated that the party operates under an established stakeholder leadership structure which has caucus heads in all states of the federation.

According to him, the NDC believes in the principles of leadership, consultation, inclusiveness, and consensus-building.

Hereiterated the party’s commitment to encouraging and supporting female participation in elective offices, and has done so in some cases.

“At no time has the NDC National Secretariat been involved in the business of picking, choosing, or imposing candidates on any constituency or state.

“We are aware of reports of some aspirants prematurely declaring themselves as candidates, as well as complaints raised by others regarding aspects of the process.

“These issues have been brought to the attention of the appeal panel and the leadership of the party and have been addressed accordingly,” the statement partly read.

Obi, Atiku are office seekers not opposition leaders - Baba-Ahmed

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has criticised key opposition figures in Nigeria, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, describing them as “office seekers” rather than genuine opposition leaders.

Speaking during an appearance on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, Baba-Ahmed questioned the response of opposition politicians to the worsening security situation in parts of the country, particularly following recent bomb blasts in Borno State.

According to him, true opposition leadership requires direct engagement with citizens affected by insecurity rather than commentary from a distance.

“Before he (Tinubu) went to the UK, there were two deadly bomb blasts in Borno. Tell me, in all these opposition leaders, who has led us to go and walk on the streets of Maiduguri?” he asked.

Baba-Ahmed recalled how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and late former President Muhammadu Buhari visited Maiduguri during the height of the insurgency years ago, arguing that such actions demonstrated solidarity with affected communities.

“Is that not what Tinubu and the late Baba Buhari did in 2013 or 2014? They went and walked on the streets of Maiduguri, shaking hands with people and all that,” he said.

The former vice-presidential candidate argued that many opposition figures have limited their interventions to social media statements rather than taking practical steps to identify with victims of insecurity.

“No, it’s not enough that they are tweeting about it, that’s child’s play. They are not opposition members, they are office seekers,” Baba-Ahmed stated.

While expressing disappointment with the broader opposition movement, he singled out former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for praise.

“There is an outlier among them. I’ve always told you, if I have my way, Amaechi is an excellent material, but I don’t have my way,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed also revisited his political relationship with Obi, revealing that he had disagreed with some of the former Anambra governor’s political decisions.

“I’ve been in support of Peter LP in any case, but Peter left where I said he should leave. He went somewhere and he left again where I told him was not suitable for him,” he added.

Primaries fallout: Labour Party grapples with two guber candidates in Akwa Ibom

The governorship primary election held by the Labour Party in Akwa Ibom State has set the stage for another round of crisis in the opposition party.

DAILY POST reports that at the end of the exercise held on May 30, 2026, two gubernatorial candidates, Emmanuel Ben and Micheal Bush emerged from different venues.

The election that saw the emergence of Emmanuel Ben was conducted at Port Harcourt Street, off Abak road, under the supervision of supposed INEC officials led by one Mrs Vivian Oladipo.

State Party chairman, Comrade Lincoln Charles told journalists that Mr Ben was the only authentic governorship candidate of Labour Party in the state as he was the only person that purchased the party’s form and was cleared by the National body, describing the candidature of any other person as illegitimate.

“I understand that there are imposters which INEC does not recognise. The governorship candidate of this Party is Emmanuel Friday Ben who has just emerged from the just-concluded primaries.

“So, anyone who’s not here is not known by INEC or Labour Party in Akwa Ibom State”, he said.

However, in a swift contrast, the electoral committee chairman of Senator Nenadi Usman’s led Labour Party, Dr Kingsley Okundaye dismissed the election of Emmanuel Ben as the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Akwa Ibom State, upholding that of Mr. Micheal Bush which was conducted at the party secretariat same day, Saturday.

He said Ben may not even appear on the ballot as he was not cleared by the national screening committee in the first place.

This came amid claims by some analysts that Ben was sponsored by the ruling party in the State to destabilize the opposition party.

Speaking on telephone with the election committee chairman, Okundaye about the legitimacy of Micheal Bush’s primary election in the state, he said the authenticity of the process hinged on the judgment of the Supreme Court that sacked Abure, and all his state exco and affirmed Nenadi Usman as the legitimate National chairman of Labour Party.

“There was only one legitimate and authentic state primary which I chaired at the instance of the national chairman, Senator Esther Nenadi Usman.

“To present candidates for the forthcoming election is the national chairman of the Labour Party as known by law and as recognized by INEC,” he said.

Meanwhile, many other opposition parties in Akwa Ibom State may also suffer a new wave of wrangling as primary elections draw to an end.

For instance, in the Action Democratic Congress, ADC, Barrister Mfon Peter, a gubernatorial aspirant, was alleged to have been sponsored by the ruling party to destabilize the opposition party.

However, his contender, Senator John Akpanudoedehe later defeated him at the primary election to emerge the party’s governorship candidate.

Peter has since dismissed the insinuations during a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, secretariat, insisting that he was eminently qualified financially, intellectually and academically to run his campaigns and eventually be the governor of the state.

He rejected the outcome of the election, alleging fraudulent activities and disenfranchisement of his supporters.

He said he had already filed a petition before the party’s governorship election appeal committee, while calling on the leadership of ADC to nullify the exercise and order a fresh primary.

A House of Representatives candidate under APM for Abak, Etim Ekpo, Ika Federal Constituency, Dr Tom Fredfish is among those who have raised the alarm over the level of alleged infiltration of opposition political parties by officials of Akwa State Government, urging them to allow democracy to thrive.

He tasked the judiciary to remain firm, dispensing justice without fear or intimidation even as he called on genuine candidates not to be deterred as the people would have the final say.

‘’Remain focused, the people are the ones that have the say but in a situation where the people are being deprived of alternatives, it’s very dangerous for democracy. With time, the fake ones will fade away,’’ he stated.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has inaugurated appeal panels to entertain petitions and grievances arising from its recently concluded primaries for presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state legislative positions.

The party said the panels were established as part of efforts to strengthen transparency, fairness and internal democratic processes in the selection of candidates.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, explained that the committees would consider complaints lodged by aspirants and stakeholders dissatisfied with the outcome of the primaries.

According to him, the panels are expected to examine all appeals and make recommendations in line with the party’s constitution, electoral guidelines and other relevant legal provisions.

“The appeal panels will hear and review appeals from contestants and stakeholders who are dissatisfied with the outcome of the primaries. They will also make recommendations in line with the party’s Constitution, Electoral Guidelines and relevant provisions of the law,” he stated.

Mohammed noted that the development reflects the PDP’s determination to ensure a credible and transparent candidate-selection process ahead of future elections.

He disclosed that the party’s National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, will lead the appeal panel handling governorship and presidential primary disputes, while former National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, is among its members.

The spokesman further revealed that Suleiman Afolagbe will chair the panel responsible for appeals relating to state assembly and National Assembly primaries.

According to the statement, the nine-member panel for legislative primaries is scheduled to sit on June 8 and June 9 at the National Working Committee, NWC, Hall located at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The 24-member governorship and presidential appeals panel is expected to commence its sittings on June 10 at the same venue.
