Published

on

The sport of boxing has long held a prominent place in American sporting history. For close to 150 years, the United States has consistently produced elite fighters who have excelled on the global stage, resulting in almost 500 world champions across multiple eras.

With so many legendary names to consider, determining the greatest American boxers of all time is a challenging task. Fortunately, artificial intelligence is more than willing to take on the debate. We asked ChatGPT to identify the 10 best American fighters ever, evaluating factors such as career achievements, championship success, longevity, activity level, and quality of opposition.

With that in mind, here are AI’s selections for the 10 greatest American boxers in history.

10

Evander Holyfield

Professional boxing record: 44 wins (29 KOs), 10 losses, 2 draws

Evander Holyfield

Although many casual fans remember Evander Holyfield for his infamous bouts with Mike Tyson, he deserves recognition as one of the most accomplished fighters of the modern era.

Known as The Real Deal, Holyfield first established himself as the undisputed cruiserweight champion before moving up and capturing the undisputed heavyweight title by defeating Buster Douglas. He remains the only boxer to become the undisputed champion in two divisions during the three-belt era and is also the only four-time heavyweight world champion.

After briefly stepping away from the sport in 1994 due to health concerns, Holyfield returned the following year and reclaimed heavyweight gold. He later defeated Tyson twice and fought Lennox Lewis to a controversial split draw. While many believe he extended his career beyond its ideal endpoint, his achievements throughout the 1980s and 1990s remain extraordinary.

9

Jack Dempsey

Professional boxing record: 68 wins (53 KOs), 6 losses, 9 draws

Jack Dempsey transformed the heavyweight division with his aggressive and exciting approach. Nicknamed Kid Blackie, he combined explosive punching power, relentless pressure, and impressive speed to overwhelm opponents throughout his career. His thrilling style made him one of America’s first sporting superstars.

During his seven-year run as heavyweight champion, Dempsey shattered attendance and revenue records. His 1921 clash with Georges Carpentier became the first boxing event to generate a million-dollar gate and attracted a crowd of around 92,000 spectators.

His legacy remains highly regarded, with the Associated Press naming him the greatest fighter of the previous half-century in 1950, while The Ring continues to rank him among the best heavyweights and punchers in boxing history.

8

Joe Frazier

Professional boxing record: 32 wins (27 KOs), 4 losses, 1 draw

Joe Frazier

During the heavyweight boom of the 1960s and 1970s, Joe Frazier stood among the division’s elite competitors. Smokin’ Joe held the undisputed heavyweight championship between 1970 and 1973 and built his reputation on relentless pressure and a devastating left hook. After winning Olympic gold in 1964, he quickly emerged as a major force in the professional ranks.

Frazier famously became the first boxer to defeat Muhammad Ali as a professional, earning a unanimous decision victory in their historic 1971 showdown. Although Ali later won their two rematches, the rivalry remains one of the sport’s defining chapters.

A three-time recipient of The Ring’s Fighter of the Year award, Frazier’s only defeats came against Ali and George Foreman.

7

Sugar Ray Leonard

Professional boxing record: 36 wins (25 KOs), 3 losses, 1 draw

Sugar Ray Leonard made history by becoming the first boxer to win major world titles in five separate weight classes. Among the legendary Four Kings, he was the only fighter to record victories over all three of the others: Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler.

Leonard’s combination of athleticism, punching power, ring intelligence, and charisma made him one of boxing’s biggest attractions. One of the most remarkable achievements of his career came when he returned from a lengthy retirement to defeat Hagler and claim the middleweight championship, handing the champion his first loss in 35 fights.

6

Mike Tyson

Professional boxing record: 50 wins (44 KOs), 7 losses

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson’s enduring popularity is reflected by the fact that decades after becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in history, he was still capable of headlining one of boxing’s biggest events in 2024 at the age of 58.

At his peak, Tyson was arguably the most-feared fighter in the sport, combining explosive power with unmatched aggression. He recorded knockouts in roughly 88% of his victories and dominated the heavyweight division as undisputed champion from 1987 to 1990. His reign ended when Buster Douglas produced one of the greatest upsets ever seen in boxing.

Tyson’s career was interrupted in 1992 when he was imprisoned following a rape conviction, but he later returned to regain a portion of the heavyweight championship before suffering notable defeats to Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.

5

Floyd Mayweather

Professional boxing record: 50 wins (27 KOs), 0 losses

Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather completed one of the most flawless careers in boxing history, retiring with an undefeated 50-0 record. Widely regarded as the premier defensive boxer of his era, Mayweather combined elite technical skill with exceptional ring IQ.

Throughout his career, he faced and defeated numerous world-class opponents, including Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Arturo Gatti, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Shane Mosley.

Rocky Marciano

Professional boxing record: 49 wins (43 KOs), 0 losses

Rocky Marciano

Rocky Marciano enjoyed a remarkable heavyweight career, retiring as champion with a perfect professional record of 49 wins and no defeats. More than half a century later, he remains the only heavyweight titleholder to leave the sport unbeaten.

Marciano’s relentless work rate, incredible durability, and tremendous punching power made him one of the division’s most-feared champions. His knockout percentage approached 88%, and he achieved the rare feat of stopping every opponent he faced in heavyweight championship contests.

A three-time Fighter of the Year, according to The Ring, Marciano is consistently ranked among the greatest heavyweights ever.

3

Joe Louis

Professional boxing record: 66 wins (52 KOs), 3 losses

Joe Louis

Joe Louis occupies a unique place in boxing history, both for his achievements in the ring and his impact beyond it. As only the second African-American heavyweight champion, he became the first to achieve widespread national admiration. His 1938 rematch victory over Max Schmeling carried significance far beyond sport and came to represent a symbolic clash between democratic values and the rise of Nazi Germany.

Louis was also one of the finest fighters the division has ever seen, blending power, technique, and precision into a complete package. His 12-year heavyweight title reign remains unmatched, while his 25 successful title defences continue to stand as a boxing record.

2

Sugar Ray Robinson

Professional boxing record: 174 wins (109 KOs), 19 losses, 6 draws

Sugar Ray Robinson is frequently described as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer in history, and his influence can be seen in generations of fighters who followed him. Combining speed, power, adaptability, flair, and technical excellence, Robinson set standards that many believe have never been surpassed.

Between 1940 and 1951, he fought 133 professional bouts and lost only once, a defeat to Jake LaMotta that he quickly avenged less than three weeks later. Robinson captured championships in multiple divisions and won the middleweight title on five occasions. He also defeated more world champions and Hall of Fame fighters than anyone else, recording 25 such victories.

His success at the highest level stretched across nearly 15 years, demonstrating exceptional longevity.

1

Muhammad Ali

Professional boxing record: 65 wins (37 KOs), 5 losses

Muhammad Ali

A figure whose legacy extends far beyond boxing, Muhammad Ali combined elite athletic ability with unmatched charisma to become one of the most recognisable athletes in history. He remains the only boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship on three separate occasions and successfully competed across two generations of top heavyweights, including the legendary fighters of the 1970s. Victories over Sonny Liston and George Foreman, along with his unforgettable trilogy against Joe Frazier, helped define an era.

Man Utd Face Transfer Concern For Sandro Tonali As AC Milan Eye Deal

Published

Manchester United face a battle to land one of their key targets in the summer transfer window, as TEAMtalk reports of another team entering the race to seal their signature.

It comes as the Red Devils are looking to bolster the midfield ranks this summer, as Ederson is set to join from Atalanta as one of a few additions expected in the centre of the pitch.

There are plenty of options on the cards, with confidence that the club could land Elliot Anderson ahead of their rivals Manchester City, while links continue to emerge over interest for the likes of Alex Scott, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba.

United are already facing a transfer hijack from Real Madrid after Jose Mourinho asked his new club to sign United target Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, and it might not be theonly one.

Then there’s the future of Sandro Tonali to consider, with Man United firmly in the race for the Newcastle star valued at £100 million, but there is fresh competition for his signature.

AC Milan Join Sandro Tonali Race

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in action

As Man United line up a potential deal for Tonali this summer, they may be met with some fierce competition, as TeamTalk reports that the midfielder’s former side AC Milan view a pathway to landing the star.

It’s stated that the Rossoneri are keen on a return, but the Italian international’s camp are frustrated by the club’s delay in putting a new leadership team in place.

AC Milan dismissed Massimiliano Allegri, along with much of the sporting structure behind him, leaving the club in search of a fresh plan after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

While that process to hire a new head coach and sporting director is ongoing, there is belief that a return to the San Siro could be on the cards for Tonali.

The £100 million price tag could prove prohibitive, but the report claims that AC Milan are looking at deal structures that could write off previous transfer fees owed to the club from Newcastle for deals involving Tonali and Malick Thiaw.

It’s unclear how successful that will be, but Tonali’s preference appears to be a return to his former club, if he is to leave the Magpies this summer.

That comes as a potential blow for Man United, who have been tracking a deal for the 26-year-old as a potential key target for the summer window.

Michael Carrick’s Midfield Focus

Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick claps the fans

While the midfield will be a focus for Manchester United, there should also be a priority in signing players with the right attitude to joining the club.

The Red Devils cannot afford to have players who don’t want to join the club, with Tonali’s preference to joining AC Milan making it clear where his priorities stand.

While United seemingly have the upper hand, with more money to spend than the Rossoneri, as well as a clear structure in place, a move for the midfielder is likely to take time, if he waits to see the outcome of their rebuild.

It would be a deal for a player described as a “superstar”, but one that may not come with the same level of buy-in that Man United could get elsewhere.

With that in mind, attention should turn towards players who can join quickly, and with a desire to play at Old Trafford to be part of the new project.

That buy-in will help Carrick continue to build the foundations that have got the club back into the Champions League, with aims of going even further in the future.

World Cup Referee Reveals Details About Why He Was Denied US Entry

More shocking details have emerged about what happened to top FIFA referee Omar Artan before he was denied entry into the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The football world was left outraged this week after learning that the Somali official would not be able to work at the tournament this summer, despite having a visa. Artan arrived at Miami International Airport on a flight from Istanbul but was not allowed to come into the country due to ‘vetting concerns’.

An unnamed United States official later stated that he was refused admission due to “association with suspected members of terror organisations.” The FIFA referee has now claimed that he simply shares the same name as a leader of a terrorist group, as he offered more eye-opening details about how he was treated in the US.

Barred 2026 World Cup Referee Omar Artan Speaks Out as FIFA Issue Statement

Upon arriving in Miami, Artan faced an immediate issue. Despite having a valid visa, he was interrogated for 11 hours, then thrown into a cell and then officially denied entry as he was sent on a flight out of the country. He explained:

“I’m simply a referee trying to live my dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup. I had all my papers in order, yet I was interrogated for hours, thrown into prison, and then expelled. I think they have a problem with my country.”

As quoted by Gazzetta, Artan explained how security took issue because he shares the same name as a leader of the Al Shabab military group, which occupies part of Somali territory. He said:

“They asked me several times if I had ever met representatives of Al Shabab. I explained to them that I knew nothing about this military group, that I was only in the United States to do my job as a referee.”

Artan became a FIFA-listed referee in 2018, was named CAF’s African Referee of the Year for 2025, and was set to make history as the first Somali official appointed to a World Cup. His absence now means just six African referees will work at the tournament this summer.

He finally landed in Somali capital Mogadishu this morning (10 June), where he was greeted by a crowd of reporters and supporters. Despite seeing his dreams dashed, Artan has spoken positively about his hopes for the future, noting:

“Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood and I am focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career.

“I would like to thank FIFA and CAF for all their support and I promise to keep my refereeing levels up as I concentrate on the future.

“I want to thank the football family for their messages and wish my colleagues all the best success during the World Cup and I look forward to joining them again in future competitions.”

Newcastle Eye Deal For One Of the Fastest Players In Spain

Published

Newcastle United are now eyeing a double signing after reaching a ‘full agreement’ with their next summer arrival. The Magpies have work to do this summer after a disappointing campaign that saw them finish firmly in the bottom half.

Eddie Howe knows that, even after so much positive work, he is not going to be granted another disappointing campaign to that extent next season, but new signings are needed for the Magpies to turn things around, and especially after Anthony Gordon was sold to Barcelona off the bat.

As ever, though, Newcastle have to be smart with their spending to keep in line with Financial Fair Play, and that means signing some ready-made players, yes, but also players with big potential yet to be reached.

Newcastle strike deal with goalkeeper

Ewen Jaouen

Newcastle have completed their first signing of the summer by bringing in Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen. The 20-year-old France Under-21s international impressed with Reims last season, serving as their starting goalkeeper and making 34 Ligue 2 appearances as they finished sixth, and with the fourth-best defensive record in the league.

The young stopper is over 6ft 5ins tall and will be signed as a prospect with the hope he can supplant Nick Pope at some point in the not too distant future.

Magpies in search of another deal

Newcastle may be shopping for the future in Jaouen, but they are also looking at players who can make an immediate impact, and Osasuna attacker Victor Muñoz certainly fits into that category.

The winger has impressed with the Spanish side this season, scoring seven and assisting five across all competitions, with the Pamplona side narrowly dodging relegation in LaLiga. The 22-year-old even won a call-up to the star-studded Spain World Cup squad, and that could complicate a transfer this summer, or at least the timing of it.

A report from the Northern Echo claims Newcastle are trying to make a breakthrough in negotiations before the Spain World Cup squad effectively shuts off all communications, although most players are already likely to have told their agents to stop business communications at this point. La Roja are just a few days from kicking off their World Cup campaign, and it’s a World Cup they have a serious chance of winning.

To further complicate things, Real Madrid hold a buy-back clause in Muñoz’s deal, having sold him to Osasuna, and if they do not take up the option of re-signing him, they will likely pocket a significant chunk of cash instead.

Osasuna are likely to demand the full release clause for their young World Cup star, which is worth £34.5million.
