Man Utd Make Shock Mason Mount Plan After Ederson Deal Collapses
Manchester United are reportedly set to hand Mason Mount a new role in Michael Carrick’s team next season.
Mount has endured an injury-ridden spell at Old Trafford since arriving from Chelsea in the summer of 2023. There were raised eyebrows when the club agreed on a £55 million deal for the English attacking midfielder.
The 27-year-old appeared just 25 times across competitions last season, featuring mostly off the bench. Talk of a potential summer exit has been downplayed and he may have an important role to play for Carrick.
Man Utd: Mount Set For Deep Role
According to SunSport, Mount is set for a deeper role to help United deal with a midfield crisis. The only fit member of Carrick’s squad in the middle of the park is Kobbie Mainoo.
Casemiro left after his contract expired last month, while Manuel Ugarte is set to be sidelined for months following a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament at the World Cup. This has come as a major setback for Carrick ahead of pre-season.
Mount did turn out in a deeper midfield role in the latter stages of last season, and it’s thought that his positive displays have safeguarded his future. Carrick likes his work rate and versatility, and he is expected to start pre-season as one of the starting central midfielders behind Fernandes.
Mainoo won’t link up with his club teammates until the club’s training session in Dublin starts on August 9th. This means Mount could be a starter against Wrexham on July 18th, Rosenborg on July 24th and Atletico Madrid on August 1st.
This could be a make-or-break season for Mount, whose injury-troubled time in the North West has left fans frustrated. Sitting on purported wages of £250,000 per week, he has yet to replicate his performances that helped Chelsea win the Champions League in 2021.

Man Utd Midfield Rebuild Continues
In the meantime, United will continue their midfield overhaul, which has seen them agree on a £50m deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos. The Brazilian is expected to be one of three new midfielders to arrive at Old Trafford.
Brazilian midfielder Ederson seemed certain to become Carrick’s first signing, but the club have reportedly pulled the plug. Issues that arose during medical assessments have seemingly caused a proposed £39m transfer from Atalanta to collapse.
United have alternatives in mind, including LOSC Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, who starred for Morocco at the World Cup. AS Roma’s Manu Kone and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott are other names that feature on the Red Devils’ wishlist.

Newcastle in Talks to Sign Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki
Newcastle have opened talks to secure a new signing in the summer transfer window as they aim to improve Eddie Howe’s squad.
It’s already proving to be a difficult window for the Magpies after losing both Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon to Tottenham and Barcelona, respectively.
Bruno Guimaraes could also be heading through the exit door, with Arsenal prepared to formally open talks to secure his signature
The Brazilian midfielder wants to make the move to the Emirates Stadium, which could mean Newcastle lose three of their best players this summer.
It’s now imperative that Newcastle bring in some adequate replacements, and they do appear to be working on multiple deals at the same time in the window.
Newcastle open transfer talks
According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle have opened talks to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the summer transfer window.
Newcastle have had talks with the player’s agency about a possible move. He’s set to leave the Italian club, with a price tag of around £17 million mooted.
Aston Villa, Leeds and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested and have held talks with the goalkeeper, who has been described as ‘world-class’. The Magpies are just the latest to have registered their interest.
It’s been a difficult summer transfer window for Newcastle so far, and they need to start getting deals over the line.
Signing a goalkeeper might not be an immediate priority after bringing in Ewen Jaouen, as they also need to prioritise other positions.

Newcastle need midfield additions
Newcastle desperately need to bring in a central midfielder in the coming weeks, especially with talk of Guimaraes wanting to leave.
The Magpies appear to be strong in their stance that the Brazilian midfielder won’t be leaving, but they said the same about Alexander Isak last summer.
Tonali has already left the club, leaving them short of options in the middle of the park. They need to up the ante when it comes to bringing in a midfielder.
Newcastle are in pole position to sign Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi, who starred at the World Cup. Until he’s pictured holding the shirt, though, Newcastle fans will be worried.

Fresh FIFA Data Emerges Following Controversial England Goal vs Norway
A significant update has emerged amid the ongoing debate over whether England’s equalising goal against Norway in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals should have been disallowed.
Jude Bellingham cancelled out Andreas Schjelderup opener on the stroke of half-time with a superb individual goal. However, replays appeared to show the ball’s trajectory changed after hitting one of the spidercam cables following Orjan Nyland’s goal-kick.
Norway head coach Stale Solbakken said in his post-match press conference, following his side’s 2-1 defeat at the Miami Stadium: “Many on the bench reacted immediately, I was not one of them. I can’t say anything about that because FIFA, if there is no sound in the chip, what can I say against that?
“The ball drops straight down from heaven. I saw another way just then so I also don’t know what happened. I think it’s pretty clear that it did and yeah, it was a strange thing.” Watch footage of the incident below:
In a statement, FIFA said: “Before England’s goal in minute 45+2 against Norway, the sensor in the Connected Ball showed no peak in the ‘heartbeat of the ball’ when in the air, and therefore no evidence that the ball touched the overhead wire and changed the movement of the ball.”
However, further fuel was added to the fire after BBC Sport’s 3D replay technology appeared to back up clams that Nyland’s goal-kick was impacted by one of the spidercam wires. Watch the clip below:
VAR Expert Provides Update
BBC Sport’s VAR expert Dale Johnson has now provided an update after the 3D replay footage went viral.
Reacting to suggestions that the height of the ball impacts how the chip inside the Adidas TRIONDA ball records data, Johnson said: This is not true. There are 16 antennas for the ball signal under the roof. Also, the ‘heartbeat of the ball’, was available at all times. There is a very slight ‘wave’ which is the ball travelling through the air. Plus, the cable cam footage doesn’t shake or move.”
He also showed how the BBC’s 3D replay technology, while impressive, still isn’t perfect. An example of a similar incident incorrectly interpreting the flight of the ball was recorded during the Round of 32 clash between Ivory Coast and Norway.
Johnson then shared a screenshot from FIFA’s connected ball technology which shows there’s “no indication whatsoever” that there was any in charge in the ball’s movement between when Nyland took his goal-kick and Elliot Anderson gained possession.
All the data FIFA have gathered confirms England’s equaliser was legal and there was no reason to disallow it, despite television replays appearing to tell a different story.
England booked their spot in only their fourth-ever World Cup semi-final thanks to Bellingham’s extra-time winner. Thomas Tuchel’s side now face old rivals Argentina at the Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday.

Rashford Set for Man Utd Talks, He’s Ready to Play for Carrick
Manchester United are pushing to pick up their transfer business in the coming weeks with the World Cup entering its final phase, as the club make decisions about what their squad will look like for the new season.
The Red Devils have completed a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos for a total £50m package, while ex-Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow is also set to join on a free transfer to bolster the goalkeeper department. A deal for midfielder Ederson had also been agreed with Atalanta, but the plug has been pulled after a knee injury was picked up in his medical.
The club are keen to make additions in other areas of the squad too, with left-wing understood to be a key area they want to strengthen, and now Michael Carrick is set to hold direct talks with a player who could fill the spot.
Rashford and Carrick Set for Direct Talks
Marcus Rashford enjoyed a fine season on loan at Barcelona in 2025/26, being described as ‘frightening’, and there was genuine surprise when the Catalan club opted not to trigger the option to make the loan permanent.
The forward is currently at the World Cup with England, who have reached the semi-finals, but the expectation is that he will be part of the club’s pre-season campaign once he returns from his holidays. Now, speaking in his latest YouTube video, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the winger and Michael Carrick are set for direct talks about his future in the coming days.
“Just quickly, after the World Cup, Marcus Rashford, as soon as England returns home, Marcus Rashford will be in direct conversations with Michael Carrick,” he said.
“But Rashford already confirmed his availability to start the pre-season at Manchester United. So the news I gave you two weeks ago is 100% confirmed. Rashford will start pre-season with Man United, and then, if there is a proposal on the table, Rashford and United will consider that.
“But Rashford will start the pre-season with Manchester United.”

Is Rashford the Answer for Man Utd?
Man Utd are in desperate need of a direct left-winger who can win a game on the own, and they already have Rashford on the books, meaning they can save their transfer budget for other areas of the pitch.
When it comes to ability, quality, and fit for the club, there aren’t many better options out there right now. But the bigger issue is the problems that took place behind the scenes with Rashford and the club’s hierarchy, and it feels best for everyone involved that a transfer takes place instead.
Should no offers or proposals arrive, then United would be stronger with him in their squad than without him, but if they can secure a replacement and get him a move away, it would probably be best for all involved.
