Tinubu funded Osibanjo’s campaign, paid Obama’s consultants N2bn – Babachir Lawal alleges

Published

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu personally financed the vice-presidential campaign of former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo during the 2015 general election and spent more than N2 billion to hire political consultants linked to former United States President Barack Obama.

Lawal made the claims during an interview with Symfoni TV released on Saturday while recounting Tinubu’s contributions to the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential campaign that brought late former President Muhammadu Buhari to power.

According to him, Tinubu mobilised substantial funds for the campaign and separately financed Osinbajo’s campaign activities because they operated somewhat independently of the main Buhari campaign.

“Through him (Tinubu), we were able to raise sufficient funds to do the campaign.

“Not only did he do that, Osibanjo’s portion of the campaign, he funded it, hired a chair to funded the trip because our Osibanjo’s campaign was a little bit broken away from the main campaign.

“Osibanjo on his own was a pastor, his ethnic nationalities and Christians had some doubts about Buhari. He was on that side.

“He wasn’t on our own area, and he was just doing sort of semi-independent of the main campaign. Tinubu was funding it,” Lawal said.

The former SGF further alleged that Tinubu engaged political consultants from the United States, whom he described as associates of former President Obama, to strengthen the APC’s campaign strategy.

“Then I know of another place when he hired some consultants for us from the US, who were doing quite a lot of professional work.

“I don’t know their names. I just know that they were Obama people, and they came and they transformed our campaign, and I knew that the money he paid them was in excess of two billion naira equivalent of dollars,” he said.

Lawal also claimed that Tinubu personally bore the cost of major campaign expenditures instead of drawing from the campaign’s central funds.

“And there’s another thing about Bola Tinubu: if there’s a need for an expenditure, no matter how massive, he doesn’t come to the campaign purse; he spends from his own purse.

“All these things I told you. Some people don’t know this, but I was there, and I knew this. And he did all these things,” he added.

2027: Obasanjo favours Peter Obi, Atiku will be President if destined – Dele Momodu

Ahead of the 2027 elections, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dele Momodu, has declared that the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is not the preferred choice of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Momodu said indications are showing that Obasanjo is favourably disposed towards the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speaking on News Central TV on Monday, the former presidential candidate also disclosed that Atiku will be President if he is destined to be.

The veteran journalist also said the outcome of the 2027 presidential election would be determined by Nigerians’ assessment of the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration’s performance rather than divisions within the opposition.

He said: “The truth here is that President Obasanjo never prosecuted Atiku, we all knew what led to their beef. It’s a political season and everybody has their strategies and from what I have read and heard from impeccable sources it’s obvious that Obasanjo might be supporting former governor Peter Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.

“I read somewhere yesterday where my friend, Osuntokun said Obasanjo is the main sponsor of that ticket. If Atiku is destined to be President of Nigeria, no force will be able to stop it.

“So we are watching and it’s obvious that Atiku is not Obasanjo’s favourite candidate, I thought the issue has been laid to rest in 2019 because there is a video in circulation where Obasanjo described Atiku as the President to be, so I don’t know what resurrected that bitter feud between both of them.”

Osun: Pack your belongings out of govt house before it’s too late – MURIC to Adeleke

Published

By

‎Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has told Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to start packing his belongings out of the Government House before it is too late.

MURIC noted that this is necessary due to the fact the people of the state have rejected him.

The organisation spoke in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Isiaq Akintola on Monday.

Akintola alleged that the governor deceived the people of Osun State, noting that the recently commissioned flyover in Osogbo has been damaged just three weeks after its commissioning.

Akintola also stated that the governor turned his administration to a government of the people of Ede, his hometown.

He further condemned the governor for what he described as poor handling of local government affairs in the state.

“As preparations for the gubernatorial election in Osun on 15th August, 2026
‎enter top gear, we remind Governor Ademola Adeleke to start packing his dancing kits out of Oke-Fia Government House before it is too late.

‎”For the flyover damaged after three weeks, for the alleged ‘edenisation’ of governance, for alleged mishandling of local government affairs, alleged examination malpractice, etc, we can’t look away.

‎”Governor Adeleke has crossed the Rubicon. He will be roundly defeated in the coming gubernatorial election in Osun on 15th August, 2026. That will be his punishment for playing on the intelligence of Osun Muslims,” the statement said.

2027: It’s unreasonable to close voter registration early – Sam Amadi

Published

By

The Director, Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for closing the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, Amadi said voter registration should remain open until one month before the election.

According to him, INEC had made significant improvements, but it still operates with outdated processes.

“Closing voter registration nearly seven months before an election is unreasonable.

“It prevents many young Nigerians who turn 18 before Election Day from registering to vote, effectively denying them the opportunity to participate until the next election cycle,” he said.

Recall that INEC had reaffirmed that the ongoing CVR exercise would close on Sunday, July 26 (yesterday), urging eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the final opportunity to register or update their voter records.
