Kylian Mbappe has performed on the biggest stages and at the greatest stadiums in world football during his wonderful career to date, but three atmospheres have stood out to him as the best.
The new all-time leading goalscorer at World Cup finals has been among the best players in world football for many years after bursting onto the scene as a teenager. Now 27, Mbappe has many unbelievable experiences under his belt.
That’s why it’s a massive compliment to any fan base he includes when asked to list the very best atmospheres he’s ever played in. Mbappe did just that when ranking his top three for YouTuber ‘Fiago’.
3. St James’ Park (Newcastle United vs Paris Saint-Germain)
One of the biggest and best stadiums in England, St James’ Park left quite an impression on Mbappe, who experienced a red-hot Champions League night on Tyneside. Newcastle United blew Paris Saint-Germain away in a 4-1 rout, and the deafening noise inside the 52,000-seater venue has stuck with Mbappe, who said:
“Newcastle. When we went with Paris. I think it was the first time they came back to the Champions League in 20 years. It was insane.”
2. Yekaterinburg Arena (France vs Peru)
The most rogue shout of Mbappe’s selections was Russia’s Yekaterinburg Arena. The Frenchman scored the winner at the ground when Les Bleus met Peru at the 2018 World Cup. He gave credit to the Peruvian support inside the stadium, stating he felt like it was a home game for the South Americans.
“Group stage of the World Cup in Russia. It was against Peru. I had the feeling that we played in Peru.”
1. Santiago Bernabeu (Real Madrid)
It’s not too surprising that Mbappe selected his current home as the stadium with the best atmosphere he’s experienced. Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu is a sight to behold, especially on a European night. It’s one of the best grounds in world football and can hold up to 83,000 fans.
“Real Madrid. Always. When it’s a great night, it’s something amazing.”
It does mean there’s no room for some other famous atmospheres he’s played in. Champions League meetings against Liverpool at Anfield, for example. Mbappe has even featured in two World Cup finals, played at Camp Nou and the Emirates. But these three grounds clearly left a strong impression on him.
