Real Madrid Fans Cast Clear Bernardo Silva Verdict After Debut
Real Madrid supporters have cast their verdict on summer signing Bernardo Silva following his debut against Ferencvaros.
Silva joined the Spanish giants this summer following nine successful years at Manchester City, where he cemented his status as one of the Premier League side’s greatest ever players.
The 31-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most technically-gifted attacking footballers on the planet, entered the fray as a second-half substitute and helped Real Madrid secure a 2-1 win in Budapest.
Goals either side of half-time from youngsters Mario Rivas and Carlos Espi sealed the win for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Although Mourinho is a huge fan of his compatriot, Silva’s physical condition on his return to training following the 2026 World Cup hasn’t impressed the revered Portuguese coach.
Speaking after the Ferencvaros game, Mourinho told reporters, per GOAL: “He is very important, but the poor guy is one of those players who benefits mentally from not doing anything during vacation, and he arrived for pre-season at a fairly low physical level. He has to improve. But he is an incredible player.”
Mourinho added: “During the game, I realised he was lacking a little physical strength, so I moved him forward to the No. 10 position. He can play there too. He can play in three or four positions.”
Real Madrid Fans React to Bernardo Silva’s Debut
Although Mourinho was critical of Silva’s physical condition, the former Man City star still managed to impress Real Madrid supporters during his 45-minute cameo.
The Portugal international looked typically assured in possession and pleased fans with his ability to carry the ball and play forward passes. Watch his highlights below:
One Madridista wrote on X (Twitter): “Finally, a midfielder who doesn’t treat the ball like it’s a bomb.”
Another commented: “It’s the number 8 that was needed. He gives balance to the team. He’s a versatile player.” A third Real Madrid fan said:
“May God keep him injury-free all season because we’re going to need him for a ton of matches (or all of them). No doubt the closest thing to Luka Modric and he’s only just arrived.”
While a fourth wrote: “It’s impossible that this player isn’t a starter over [Aurelien] Tchouameni or [Federico] Valverde.”
A fifth said: “The great thing about him is his passes that break the lines and forward passes,” while a sixth added: “Wow, we finally got the exact type of profile we have been missing in our midfield over the last two seasons in Bernardo.”
Managing Madrid handed Silva a 7/10 rating, commenting: “Mourinho was critical of his fitness levels after the game, but Silva worked very hard off the ball, and it was refreshing to see his composure in possession.”
Silva Pleased to Make Real Madrid Debut After ‘Tough’ First Week
Speaking after his first appearance for Los Blancos, Silva told Real Madrid TV: “I am very happy. This match is very important to prepare for the season and personally, I am very happy to have debuted with Real Madrid.
“It’s only the first week, but I’m very happy. There are still many things to improve, but the most important thing is to gain rhythm to start the season well, and that’s what we are doing.”
Asked to describe his first week in pre-season training at Real Madrid, Silva added: “Tough, but very happy to have started. I’m trying to get to know my teammates because it’s very important to understand the characteristics of each one to know what they like during matches and training sessions.
“I will be focusing on that over the next few weeks, preparing as much as possible to start the season well.”
Brock Rechsteiner is set to be offered a stunning new job in the wake of his NFL suspension.
Rechsteiner was suspended by the NFL for the first six games of the regular season, according to the league’s transaction wire. No reason was given for the suspension.
The New Orleans wide receiver, who stands at a towering 6-foot-2, will still be allowed to practice during training camp and play in pre-season games. His suspension will take effect when the roster is reduced to 53 players on August 30.
Rechsteiner, who was unselected in the NFL draft, was signed by the Saints as an undrafted rookie after rookie mini-camp in May. He has been competing for a spot on the Saints’ 53-player roster.
Brock Rechsteiner to Be Offered New Job After NFL Suspension
Despite Rechsteiner’s off-field troubles, he’s attracting plenty of interest away from the NFL bubble.
A WWE higher-up has already discussed the possibility of bringing the 23-year-old, whose father is WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Scott Rechsteiner, better known by the ring name Scott Steiner, into the company shortly after he signed with the Saints.
The official indicated that his NFL suspension would have little impact on WWE’s interest in acquiring his services in the future, according to a report from Fightful Select.
He appears to have the chance to follow in his father’s footsteps amid his NFL suspension.
‘99.9% Chance’ Brock Rechsteiner Joins WWE
Rechsteiner’s proposed foray into the world of professional wrestling seems destined given his family lineage.
What’s more, it is said that there is a ‘99.9% chance’ that he receives an offer from the WWE once his NFL career is eventually over.
WWE has reportedly been monitoring Rechsteiner, who is the cousin of WWE star Bron Breakker, through his college career, with the wrestling promotion hearing positive things about him during the process.
So much so, the belief within WWE is that he would not need to go through a traditional tryout process, with suggestions that they expect to sign him outright when the time comes.
In January 2025, WWE icon Scott claimed that Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque offered his son a WWE Next in Line deal, which is a system that supports the training and development of athletes at certain wrestling schools, wrestling promotions and colleges.
Rechsteiner has also communicated his desire to join the wrestling leaders when his NFL career is wrapped up.
“I want to pursue football as long as I can, play as long as I can, but once I’m done, I’ll get into wrestling, too,” he said of his WWE plans via WDSU-TV’s Sharief Ishaq.
Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi has died of suspected heatstroke following a training session in Japan.
Vunilagi was hospitalised earlier this week after developing severe symptoms following a training session in soaring temperatures.
In the southern city of Fukuoka, temperatures reached 35 degrees. Last year, Japan endured its hottest summer on record and parts of the country have reached 40 degrees in recent weeks. Around 18,000 people were hospitalised for heatstroke in July, with 45 of them pronounced dead on arrival, per the fire and disaster management agency. The Asian country experiences around 1,300 heat-related deaths per year and aims to reduce that number by half by 2030.
Vunilagi’s club Kyuden Voltex said the 26-year-old died on Friday, August 7.
Saimoni Vunilagi’s Club Kyuden Voltex Announce Death
Following the tragic passing of Vunilagi, the team issued a statement.
The Japanese second division side said his death had left players and club staff ‘devastated’.
It read: “After team practice on Monday, 3 August 2026, Saimoni displayed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away.
“The players, staff, and all team associates are devastated by this sudden news.
“Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season.
“We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
“At this time of profound grief, we respectfully ask the family be granted space and privacy.”
Further details surrounding the circumstances of his death have yet to be disclosed.
Japan Rugby League One Issue Statement After Death of Saimoni Vunilagi
Japan Rugby League One also posted a statement in the wake of Vunilagi’s passing.
They said: “We express our heartfelt condolences upon receiving the news of the passing of Saimoni. We offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and all those involved.”
Vunilagi joined Kyuden Voltex last month, having previously played for Japanese Rugby League One team Tokyo Sungoliath.
The towering back rower was born in Fiji but spent several years developing his career in Japan after completing schooling in New Zealand, before turning professional in 2003.
He attended Daito Bunka University in Tokyo and graduated in 2023 before joining Sungoliath. He made three senior appearances for the club before moving to Kyuden Voltex during the 2026 offseason.
The rugby community is in mourning as a minute’s silence was observed before the Japan vs Australia Test match in Osaka on Saturday.
Vunilagi’s former teammates Kanji Shimokawa and Naoto Saito both started for Japan.
The English FA have issued a statement introducing a landmark rule that is set to impact nearly 900 clubs in the 2026/27 campaign across multiple divisions in the 2026/27 campaign.
A decision comes more than four years after the death of a player, with the death of a former Arsenal youth player just last year finally calling upon football’s lawmakers to act accordingly.
The new rule is set to bring sweeping changes to stadiums across the country, with health and safety at the forefront of the legislation. Funding for the changes is also set to be initiated by the Premier League.
Landmark New Rule Introduced by English FA
The FA has introduced new regulations prohibiting solid brick, breeze block and concrete barriers around pitches across the National League System, following a safety review triggered by the death of Billy Vigar.
The 21-year-old Chichester City forward and former Arsenal youth striker sustained a fatal brain injury in September last year when he ran into a concrete wall while attempting to keep the ball in play during a match at Wingate and Finchley.
Under the updated pitch perimeter criteria, such barriers are no longer permitted at clubs competing in men’s steps one to six and tiers three and four of the Women’s National League. In a statement, the FA said:
“Any existing solid brick, breeze block or concrete barriers must be removed as soon as reasonably practicable, or covered with suitable protection if they cannot be removed for structural reasons. We have informed the clubs at this level that will be required to take action as a result of these changes. Matches may continue to be played at affected grounds during this period.
“However, clubs should assess the safety of their pitch perimeter barriers on an ongoing basis, and where alterations to these structures have been recommended during this review, they should develop a plan to complete any such alterations within a reasonable timeframe.”
The FA has notified roughly 160 of the approximately 900 clubs playing at the affected levels that at least one element of their ground requires modification.
Financial support for the necessary work will come jointly from the FA and the Premier League, channelled through the Premier League Stadium Fund, while the programme is already underway.
How Change Finally Came About
The players’ union had been campaigning for a comprehensive review of pitch perimeter safety well before Vigar’s tragic death. In 2022, Bath City’s Alex Fletcher was left in a coma after a similar incident, prompting the PFA to raise its concerns about the dangers posed by hard barriers at non-league grounds.
By June 2023, the PFA and the then Sports Minister, Stuart Andrew, had jointly written to the FA, the Premier League, the EFL and the National League, urging them to examine perimeter safety standards. Reacting to the announcement, a PFA spokesman said: “Following the tragic death of Billy Vigar last year, we again highlighted these concerns and made clear our view that the lack of progress and leadership on this issue had been unacceptable.
“As part of working groups set up by the FA following Billy’s death, we pushed for the FA’s Stadium Accreditation criteria to be amended to ban these types of walls so that there is a clear and centralised policy for clubs to follow. Given that, it’s a welcome step that the FA’s regulations have now been changed to reflect that position.”
They continued: “However, it will now be important for progress on the removal of such walls – and effective mitigation of risks ahead of their removal – to be properly monitored, and for clubs to be given the support they need so that these changes can happen as soon as possible. Player safety must always come first.”
