Kieran McKenna Responds to Celtic Job Links After Rodgers Exit
Kieran McKenna says he is happy at Ipswich Town despite being under consideration for the Celtic vacancy.
GMS understands the Tractor Boys will fight to keep McKenna if the Bhoys make a formal approach. The 39-year-old is one of the potential candidates to replace Brendan Rodgers, but his £5m release clause, and his wage could also prove a stumbling block.
McKenna Speaks Out Following Links to Bhoys Job
Ipswich are currently 12th in the Championship, three points off the play-offs, and travel to Queens Park Rangers this weekend. McKenna is under contract at Portman Road until 2028 and enjoys a strong relationship with chief executive Mark Ashton. Celtic are currently debating whether to make a formal approach, but McKenna insists his only focus is on guiding his current employers back to the Premier League.
When asked in his pre-match press conference, McKenna confirmed that he is solely focused on his work at Portman Road and is taking no notice of links to the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.
He said: “We’ve got a lot of Scottish representatives here today! It’s not something [the Celtic vacancy] I have given any thought to, or where any part of my concentration is. I have a special job here at a special football club. It’s a massive club. We’re at a really important stage of the season starting on Saturday at QPR. My focus has been 100 per cent on the group here.
“My focus is honestly just on Ipswich. I know the size and significance of this football club. So there is no time or space to discuss any other football club.
“I have not had any [formal] conversations [with Celtic]. My focus has been here. I’ll work here as if I am going to be here forever, and I have done since the day I came here. When I arrived, I always knew it was going to be a long-term project. We are still in the middle of that. If you look outside, you’ll see a lot of cranes, which shows you this club is still building.
“I approach this job like I’ll be Ipswich manager forever. I know that’s not always going to be the case, but I’ll always do my best as long as I am here.”
When asked whether he has been keeping track of Celtic’s season, along with the decision to hand Martin O’Neill the job on an interim basis, he added: “It’s not something I have followed closely. I used to coach Martin’s nephew. That’s the closest link I have to Martin O’Neill.
“[Celtic] is a really big football club. Growing up, we all have our affinities. I don’t think everyone has to go around and announce the club they support, but of course it’s a really big football club, but we are in a really busy stage of our own season.”
Bellamy and Keane Among Others Under Consideration
Along with McKenna, Craig Bellamy is another coach under consideration. The Wales boss played for Celtic in 2005 and is open to returning to club football in the long-run. However, his primary focus is on taking Wales to the 2026 World Cup, with vital qualifiers next month against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia.
If Wales win both games, they will guarantee second place in Group J and a play-off next March. Bellamy is unlikely to walk away from Wales while their World Cup hopes are alive, but Celtic could consider keeping Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney on as interim managers for a longer period than first planned if the right candidate is worth waiting for.
Former Celtic striker Robbie Keane and Damien Duff have also been discussed and enjoy an excellent relationship with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond. Keane is currently manager of Ferencvaros and won the Hungarian title last season, while Duff is a former Celtic coach and is a free agent after leaving Shelbourne.
Celtic also have Bodo/Glimt’s Kjetil Knutsen and Club Brugge’s Nicky Hayen on their shortlist. Hayen was asked about joining Celtic following his side’s 6-1 victory over Eendracht Aalst and simply replied, “Never say never in football, but I am happy here.”
Ange Postecoglou is the other name linked with the vacancy, but a return to Celtic is unlikely, as GMS revealed earlier this week. Postecoglou won the domestic treble with Celtic in 2022/23 and is out of work after lasting just 39 days at Nottingham Forest, but those close to the 60-year-old have distanced him from the role.
GMS has also learned Postecoglou was on a significantly higher wage than Rodgers. It’s understood Celtic are not prepared to match Postecoglou’s old terms for any candidate, nor has the Greek-Australian shown a willingness go back to Parkhead.

Everton Now Want World Cup Record-Breaker As Transfer Advantage Revealed
Everton are looking at potential midfield additions this summer, as Marca claims the Toffees are eyeing a deal for a World Cup star in the transfer market.
There is uncertainty specifically surrounding the future of Idrissa Gana Gueye, as the experienced midfielder’s contract comes to an end at the beginning of next month.
In the retained list, the club confirmed that talks were continuing over a potential extension for the 36-year-old, with no confirmation over fresh terms as things stand.
While that could yet signal an exit for him, Everton are looking at other midfield options, one of which is an international teammate of Gueye.
Everton Want Pape Gueye Transfer
A potential replacement for Idrissa Gueye could be his international teammate Pape Gueye, who has been impressing for Senegal in the World Cup this summer.
Marca reports that Everton are keen on a deal for the 27-year-old midfielder, with Villarreal expecting to sell the star for a big fee in the coming weeks of the transfer market.
The Toffees hold an advantage over some of their rivals in the race, as it’s claimed that Gueye is prioritising a move to the Premier League over any other option.
That only remains an advantage if they are the only team from England eyeing up a deal, as others in the division could soon enter the race for his signature.
Gueye made 39 appearances for Villarreal last season, scoring five goals and assisting twice. While he impressed with those displays, it’s at the World Cup where the Senegal star is really showing his class and quality.

Gueye Impresses At The World Cup
The World Cup is platforming plenty of top stars, with the competition likely to play a huge part in some key transfer switches across the world.
Everton could benefit from that, with Gueye being among those who have impressed in the tournament so far, following three group stage matches.
Everton Plot Bid For ‘Special Player’ As David Moyes Pushes For New Forward
Everton are plotting a bid to sign a new forward this summer, with David Moyes pushing for a potential reunion.
The 27-year-old’s most recent appearance came against Iraq, where he picked up two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win. In the process, he became the first African player in the World Cup to get three goal involvements in one match.
That was the moment he became a record-breaker in the competition, with Senegal now dreaming of putting together a deep run with Gueye at the heart of the midfield.

Arsenal Problem Emerges As Barcelona Join Transfer Race For Kroupi
Arsenal could face a battle to land one of their striker transfer targets this summer, as Sport reports that Barcelona are also eyeing a possible deal.
The Gunners are in the market for a possible centre-forward addition, despite making the move to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP last year.
Over the course of last season, the Sweden international came up with some important goals as he bagged 21 goals across all competitions.
There was plenty left to be desired, however, and in the long-term, Arsenal may be considering their next move at centre-forward to add another clinical option.
One target is Eli Junior Kroupi, who the Gunners are now facing even more competition to sign.
Barcelona Want Kroupi Transfer
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Bournemouth striker Kroupi, who impressed in his debut campaign in the Premier League last season.
The forward scored 13 goals in the Premier League, aged just 20, showing plenty of quality and some potential to grow even further in the future.
Bournemouth have set a transfer price tag worth over £100 million to secure a move for Kroupi, an expensive deal but one that may be worth it as the Gunners look to repeat their success in the Premier League.
That said, there is competition for his signature, as Sport now reports that Barcelona are monitoring a deal for the Frenchman as a potential option this summer.
Kroupi is viewed as a “Plan B” to Barca for Julian Alvarez, as a transfer saga surrounding the Atletico Madrid star continues to drag out in public.
The deal could put Arsenal on the back foot in any approach for the Bournemouth ace, as they are busy pursuing midfield options as it stands.
It remains to be seen whether Barcelona will make an offer, and whether it will be enough to tempt the Cherries into sanctioning an exit.
However, it could still work in Arsenal’s favour if a move does come about.

Julian Alvarez to Arsenal Impact
If Barcelona do end up moving for Kroupi, it may come as a blow for Arsenal, but it could also open up another deal for the side this summer.
Alvarez has been a target for the Gunners for some time now, but a move currently seems unlikely while the versatile striker pushes to join Barca.
Arsenal Ready £80M Bid For ‘Brilliant’ Star As Contract Decision Made
Arsenal are preparing a bid for a key transfer target, after receiving positive communication from representatives of the player.
If the Catalonian side push to land Kroupi instead, that is likely to close off the route to Alvarez, opening up a possible deal for Mikel Arteta’s team instead.
It remains to be seen just how possible that is, with Atletico Madrid seemingly holding firm on their stance that no sale will be happening this summer.

2026 World Cup Nation Punish Players By Cancelling Their Flight Home
The 2026 World Cup group stages are coming to a close, and many countries have already bowed out of the 48-team competition.
The biggest international tournament in world football was expanded this year, meaning a record 32 teams make it through to the knockout rounds at the United States, Canada and Mexico-hosted event.
However, it means only 16 nations bow out in disappointment after the first stage. One of the more high-profile countries to fall short at this hurdle, alongside Scotland and Turkey, were Uruguay.
Players Punished For Shocking World Cup Display
The two-time champions were expected to progress through the group stage after being matched up against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Especially with legendary manager Marcelo Bielsa at the helm.
However, it all unravelled very quickly for the South Americans. A disappointing draw against Saudi Arabia was followed by a hectic tie with Cape Verde. That left them needing maximum points against European champions Spain to ensure qualification for the next round.
To make matters worse, reports of unrest between the players and Bielsa surfaced in the days leading up to the final group match. In the end, a Fernando Muslera mistake sealed a 1-0 defeat, and Uruguay were out with not so much as a whimper.
Reports in Uruguay (via The Sun) have claimed the AUF have responded by punishing their players by cancelling their private flight home from Mexico. Each member of the staff and playing squad had to arrange their own way home as a result.
Why Uruguay Have Four Stars on Their Shirts Despite Only Winning Two World Cups
FIFA have approved the kit design, despite being against it in the past.
The exact reason for this decision hasn’t been officially confirmed, but it appears an easy link to make when they exited the competition in such a poor way.
Marcelo Bielsa to Leave Uruguay After Angry Outburst
Bielsa wasn’t in the mood for media duties after becoming the first South American nation to be eliminated from this year’s competition. He had an angry outburst in a post-match interview, making his frustrations clear.
It’s also been made clear that he will be leaving his role with the national side following their exit. An emotional Bielsa claimed he had left ‘nothing’ in his spell with the South Americans.
7 National Teams Can Wear Special FIFA 2026 World Cup Gold Badge – Including England
Seven teams at the 2026 World Cup can wear a special gold FIFA badge on their sleeves
He said (per The Guardian): “I have not left anything to Uruguayan football. A coach who has been in a country for three years and not got results cannot say he has made a contribution. Fourth place in the qualifiers has no value and nor does third at the Copa América and there is no need to even define this performance [at the World Cup]. My time doesn’t say anything.”
He then explained his reasoning for bringing off Muslera and talisman Federico Valverde. Claiming his side could’ve earned seven points instead of just two, he fumed:
“We could have seven points but we have two. This is the result of my management. It was my job to manage a group of players that I did not manage to turn into a force. If you want explanations – which I don’t think you want – I would say that of the seven points we deserved, we got two.
“I am responsible for what Uruguay did at this World Cup. [Your] questions do not seek answers but a chance to attack me. I am responsible for all the disappointment because of the job I did. But if I have to analyse what happened, I also have to include the errors. Muslera was the one who decided to depart and I took Valverde off because I wanted to strengthen the attack.”
