10 Best Teams to Manage on Football Manager 2026 (Ranked)

Published

on

The return of Football Manager after a two-year absence has fans champing at the bit to get in the desktop dugout and flex their muscles against the top managers in the world.

But the break has seen women’s football added to the franchise for the first time, opening the door to a host of invigorating saves to keep you occupied during the somewhat dreaded real-life international break.

That said, which teams are the best to manage, given the various clubs on offer for players? We have assessed and ranked the top team picks for FM 26 managers, including the men’s and women’s games and leagues from around the world.

Do you want to wage war with Pep Guardiola in the Premier League? Or is the prospect of guiding a minnow from non-league obscurity and into world dominance your focus? You can get your hands on the game on November 4 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Ranking Factors

  • The Challenge (What situation are you encountering?) — A fallen giant? A minnow to build? Financial constraints?
  • League/Nation — One of the biggest in England? Women’s football? Going European or global?
  • The Entertainment (How engrossing will managing said club be?) — Under immediate pressure? Familiar with the squad and the club’s history?
  • Long-Term Gameplay (Will you still be loading this save by this time next year?) — Eyeing back-to-back promotions, creating a dynasty, overseeing youth players’ development.

Durham Women

Women’s football makes its long-awaited debut in FM 26, including the Barclays Women’s Super League 2. There are compelling stories of gamers who have spent years managing non-league clubs and turning them into the Barcelona of English football.

If that’s the goal for any prospective FM coach looking at the women’s game, then Durham Women are the team to choose. With limited resources and no experience in the Super League top-flight, it’s a mission that will be overwhelmingly satisfying if promotion turns into major trophy success.

Its northeast location means you prepare for local tussles with Sunderland and Newcastle, and that makes this story even more fulfilling. Durham are currently mid-table in WSL 2, so play-offs may be the ambition on your desktop and amongst Adam Furness’ Wildcats in real life.

Manchester United

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T122214.449

Can you bring the glory days again and get the backing of The Stretford End? As of October 2025, seven managers have tried since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, but to no avail. But this is a new era at Manchester United, which is why, of all of Europe’s sleeping giants, the Red Devils are the most challenging to take on.

To turn the tide, you are, understandably, under immense pressure from the get-go and tasked with continuing to rebuild a flawed squad. But there are gems to help you along the way, such as Leny Yoro, who has the highest potential of any FM wonderkid in this year’s game.

There are also world-class stars such as Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha at your disposal, but also several underperformers on large wages. Given the need to be an instant success, it’s also essential that you continue to follow the club’s youth tradition and the likes of JJ Gabriel are obvious academy starlets to turn to.

This is all about United’s revival as a European powerhouse and perhaps becoming the next Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby. A step-by-step approach starts with a top four challenge in your debut campaign.

8

Sheffield Wednesday

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T123450.166

Another one of England’s big guns who have fallen to the wayside over the years is Sheffield Wednesday, who were placed into administration in October. Everything needs addressing at Hillsborough with little to no money, meaning you’ll have to be clever about managing the squad and plan ahead.

The Owls are relegation candidates, so survival is first on the agenda, while doing so with a squad that has glaring problems due to chairman Dejphon Chansiri’s failure to pay wages. But the old guard, such as skipper Barry Bannan, are ones to lean on for experience ahead of an almighty challenge.

Football Manager’s blog advises managers to have a transfer shortlist ready by January, and to focus on athletic full-backs. Using the loan market will be key, as Wednesday did by signing Harry Amass from Manchester United in the summer.

The Hillsborough faithful deserve to see their club put back on track and, beyond that, propelled back into the big time. It won’t be easy and won’t be for the faint-hearted.

7

Girondins de Bordeaux

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T123628.418

Rebuilding is what has FM players glued to their keyboards each year, and that will be the sole purpose of taking over Bordeaux. No longer are Les Marines et Blanc competing in Ligue 1 and challenging for Europe; they find themselves way down the French lower tiers and it will take years before they are back on the grand stage.

There is no Andy Carroll for those wondering, as he’s back in England with Dagenham & Redbridge, and their current crop aren’t exactly flourishing in the Championnat National 2 after an administrative double relegation in 2024. Putting down promotion targets is a tip to take on board if you do wish to try the bold Bordeaux quest.

Focusing the rebuild on academy prospects is a good way to kickstart your reign, and, of course, the club’s facilities are much superior to those of their opponents in the lower division.

6

Seattle Sounders

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T123725.820

Lionel Messi‘s arrival at Inter Miami has helped the MLS grow towards rivalling the top leagues in world football. Viewership figures are improving season after season, and teams are luring some of Europe’s top talent to the United States.

While there might be an appeal to take charge of a club with such a household name, the most intriguing MLS club may well be the Seattle Sounders. The Rave Green is a franchise deeply embedded in the city, and as such, you’ll feel a responsibility to make their fans proud.

There is risk in taking over the Sounders because their status as one of the most respected teams in the country means you must deliver and anything less than finishing in the higher end of the table feels like a failure. Just make sure Danny Musovski is on song up top and Albert Rusnak is controlling proceedings from the middle of the park.

5

Arsenal Women

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T123542.255

It’s been six years since Arsenal won the Women’s Super League title, and they have been chasing Chelsea, which has become the league’s dominant force. If you want to get to grips with the debuting women’s game, then the Gunners are an ideal pick due to their short and long-term gameplay potential.

They have a strong squad to work with, and this depth can allow you to try and compete for top prizes both domestically and in Europe. A decent transfer budget allows you to dip into the market for potential improvements, although you should be placing your faith in Michelle Agyemang once her loan at Brighton expires.

Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo will be vital to keep on board in the effort to bring the Super League title back to North London. Adding another Champions League to the one won back in 2007 should be the number one desire.

4

Sunderland

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T123528.190

Sunderland are the top Premier League pick for those wanting a short-term fix with FM 26 until the real beautiful game becomes too much of a distraction later this season. But for gamers willing to put the work in and enjoy a long-term save, the Black Cats’ current situation is ideal.

Just returning to the top-flight, your job is to keep the red and whites up, and based on Regis Le Bris’ start to the campaign, it’s extremely doable. A squad that has been backed with some stellar signings, including Granit Xhaka, and a youth system that has developed names such as Chris Rigg, gives you the base point to try and make history in the long run.

Attack, attack, attack should ideally be your philosophy to excite one of the most celebrated set of supporters in the country. It will feel that much better to lead the Wearside outfit to major success at the expense of their rich neighbours, Newcastle United.

3

AFC Wimbledon

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T123503.683

There is something gratifying about embarking on an underdog story on Football Manager, which sees you guide a club from the lower divisions and into the elite of domestic or even European football. Clubs such as Wrexham are attempting to do so in real life but with the financial backing of two Hollywood actors.

But if you decide to take over AFC Wimbledon, it gives you the opportunity to reward a proper fan club who are one of English football’s most compelling stories. Founded in 2002, they have a passionate fanbase who built the club themselves, and on FM26, supporters and the higher-ups value integrity, hard work, and homegrown talent.

Currently battling it out in EFL League One, you’ll start with a limited budget, a small stadium and modest players, although there are some talented members of the Dons’ squad. Danilo Orsi, Matty Stevens and the on-loan Nathan Bishop are three who could come in handy.

Taking to the Cherry Red Records Stadium’s dugout, you’ll also slyly be looking to do what fierce rivals MK Dons have failed to do by reaching the Premier League. This is a perfect save if you want emotional investment with a long-term reward.

2

Union Berlin

White Black Modern Photo Collage Before After Youtube Thumbnail - 2025-10-31T123435.198

As story-driven FM 26 saves come, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more entertaining ride than that of Union Berlin, who have been on the rise in recent years. The Iron Ones, like Wimbledon, are rooted in fan culture, and there isn’t anything better than becoming the hero of your club’s support.

The task for the German outfit is to keep the fairytale story going while also pursuing long-term sustainability. It’s a moneyball-style save with a limited budget, meaning scouting should be a priority in a league that is among the most competitive in Europe.

Can you guide Union to the Bundesliga title picture and slug it out with the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen? There are some players to list on the must-keep notepad at the start of your reign, such as Frederik Ronnow, Danilho Doekhi and Diogo Leite.

England Face Nightmare Route to 2026 World Cup Final

Published

on

By

England’s Group L probably sits somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of difficulty.

At 33rd and 74th, respectively, the Three Lions will see Panama and Ghana as winnable matches, but the addition of Croatia means Group L is one of only two groups in the entire tournament that includes more than one team from the top 11 of the FIFA rankings.

So, should Thomas Tuchel’s men win their opener against Luka Modric and co, England will feel good about topping the group. Should they let anything slip, the path to the final gets considerably more complicated.

Here is how both scenarios could play out.

If England Win Group L

Harry Kane in action for England

Topping the group sends England into a round of 32 tie against a third-placed finisher from Group E, H, I, J or K. The most likely opponents from that pool include the Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Uruguay, Senegal, Norway or Colombia.

England would then face the winners of Group A, most likely Mexico, on home soil at the Estadio Azteca. It’s a fixture England has dominated over the years. Their only competitive meeting was a 2-0 England win in the group stage of the ‘66 World Cup, but England have come out on top in five of the eight friendlies the nations have staged.

If England get past Mexico, it ramps up considerably. Brazil could lie in wait in the quarter-finals. They’re expected to top Group C and navigate their way through the early knockout rounds with relative ease, unless Morocco, the dark horses of the tournament pull off a surprise.

World Cup 2026 Power Rankings

England, Spain and France feature in the top 10.

Should England make the last four, Argentina or Portugal would likely be waiting, and what a quarter-final that would be in itself. England would meet either Messi or Ronaldo should they make it past the Selecao, with both players knowing that this is likely their last tournament.

The last time England beat either side in a major tournament knockout stage was on their way to winning the World Cup in 1966, where they beat Argentina in the quarter-finals, and then Portugal in the semis.

Spain look the most probable opponents in the final. They’re on the opposite side of the draw from England, and would likely face France in the semis, who, in reality, have every chance of being there as well. Spain beat England in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, so the opportunity for revenge on the grandest stage possible wouldn’t be lost on anyone.

If England Finish Second in Group L

England stars could end up NOT shaking hands with one player at the 2026 World Cup

Finishing second flips England onto the other side of the bracket entirely, and the path immediately becomes tougher. Their round of 32 opponents would be the runners-up from Group K, most likely Colombia, who sit in a group alongside Portugal, DR Congo and Uzbekistan.

Win there, and Spain await in Dallas. The European champions are expected to top Group H and come through the next round comfortably, meaning the Euro 2024 final rematch might not require both sides to make it to the final.

Beating Spain to reach a quarter-final would be a monumental achievement in itself. Belgium are the most likely opponents at that stage, as potential Group G winners, arguably the easiest of the tournament. Though the USA, as co-hosts, can’t be ruled out either.

France have a tough route through the draw on this side of the bracket, with clashes against Germany and the Netherlands likely, but if anyone has the squad to navigate that gauntlet, it’s them. England would come face-to-face with the nation that eliminated them from the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

Argentina could be England’s opponents in the final on this route. The holders may face Portugal in the quarters and navigate a tough semi-final, but Messi’s side are chasing back-to-back World Cup titles for the first time in almost a century. After two doses of heartbreak in finals at the last two Euros, England would then have to get past the GOAT to avoid a third and lift the World Cup.

Sheikh Jassim’s Stance on New Man Utd Takeover Bid

Published

on

By

Three years on from one of the most drawn-out takeover sagas, the question over Manchester United’s ownership has resurfaced and inevitably, so has the name of Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Qatari businessman came closer than anyone to purchasing 100% of the club from the Glazer family back in 2023, and with fresh reports of certain Glazer siblings now pushing for a sale, speculation about a renewed approach from his camp was always going to follow.

But will he actually come back?

Glazer Family Considering Selling Stake in Man Utd

The day has come.

How Close was Sheikh Jassim to Buying Manchester United?

Glazers
Glazers

When the Glazers opened up the bidding process in late 2022, Sheikh Jassim quickly emerged as the most ambitious suitor. His Nine Two Foundation tabled multiple offers, eventually understood to be in the region of £5 billion, promising to clear the club’s debt entirely and invest heavily in the stadium, training ground and squad. It was exactly what United fans had been crying out for.

Every Premier League Club’s Owners Ranked From Worst to Best

From Tottenham and Manchester United’s odious ownerships to Brighton and Manchester City’s empires, every Premier League owner has been ranked.

But it wasn’t enough. The Glazers ultimately favoured Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s proposal for a partial stake, with the INEOS billionaire completing a deal worth around £1.25 billion for just under 30% of the club. A source close to the Qatari group later said they felt the goalposts had “continually changed” throughout the process and that they had been left feeling used.

Ratcliffe’s time in charge has done little to ease the frustration of the United fanbase. Mass redundancies, repeated managerial changes, and even a reduction in staff Christmas bonuses have kept the club in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Will Sheikh Jassim Make Another Bid for Man Utd?

Old Trafford
Old Trafford

So, with the Glazers now reportedly entertaining the idea of a full sale again, has Sheikh Jassim reconsidered?

According to the Mail Online, the answer is a firm no, at least for now. A fresh bid is described as “highly unlikely,” with those close to the group said to be “scarred” by the way the 2023 process played out.

Crucially, Sheikh Jassim’s consortium hasn’t even been approached to gauge their interest, which in itself says something about where things stand between the two parties. The ambition was never in question; his 2023 statement set out a sweeping vision to make United “the greatest football club in the world.”

The 10 Players Sheikh Jassim Wanted to Sign For Man United

Ruben Amorim’s current squad could have looked a lot different had it not been INEOS that took over the club last year.

But ambition and appetite are two different things, and right now, the appetite is nowhere to be seen.

United dreamed of what his involvement might have looked like, so this will feel like a disappointing update. But you never know when things might re-ignite. Newcastle’s takeover by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) was dead in the water, but a year later, the deal was back on the table, and they became the richest team in the world overnight.

Liverpool Get Van de Ven Transfer Boost as Tottenham Table Van Hecke Bid

Published

on

By

Liverpool are entering a new era at Anfield under Andoni Iraola for next season, and they have now been given a major boost in their bid to sign a top Tottenham Hotspur star.

The Reds have seen Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson depart the club at the end of their contract this month, and that means that defensive reinforcements are being eyed as a priority for the transfer window, with Iraola keen to ensure they don’t ship more than 50 goals again.

One of the top targets for Liverpool in recent months has been Spurs star Micky Van de Ven, with the centre-back understood to be very keen on making the switch to Merseyside.

Liverpool Get Major Van de Ven Boost

Stand-in Tottenham Hotspur captain Micky van de Ven applauds fans

Van de Ven, who has been described as ‘world-class’, has been expected to depart the north London club after they narrowly avoided relegation for a second consecutive season, with the Netherlands star playing a key role in keeping them in the top flight.

Spurs are also looking to bolster their squad and have already brought in Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on a free transfer. Now manager Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear that he is preparing for an exit by getting the club to table a big offer for Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke.

While the offer was rejected, with Brighton pointing to their £70m valuation, Spurs are confident of getting a deal done and have already agreed personal terms with the Netherlands international.

While there is an expectation that Cristian Romero will leave too, Liverpool’s interest in Van de Ven simply cannot be ignored in this situation, and should Tottenham bring in Van Hecke, then it would likely be a major boost to their plans to bring the 25-year-old to Anfield.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a new central defender to come in and strengthen the squad after Konate’s departure, and they need whoever it is to be ready to make an immediate impact.

Jeremy Jacquet has already agreed a deal to join the club and will arrive to provide competition, while Iraola will be hopeful that young Italian defender Giovanni Leoni can return from his knee injury and continue to be a top prospect.

But with Virgil Van Dijk turning 35 before the season starts, another first-team ready option is needed to ensure standards are maintained, and Van de Ven would be perfect if a deal can be found.
