Elliot Anderson Cements England Midfield Spot Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Published

on

Elliot Anderson uttered ‘I will definitely try’ when asked at this summer’s Under-21 European Championships if his goal was to make England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Unbeknownst to him, as England Under-21s went on an incredible journey to be crowned back-to-back champions of Europe, the Nottingham Forest midfielder was just months away from nailing down a spot in the England senior squad.

Unlike left-back Tino Livramento, who England boss Thomas Tuchel called before the Under-21 European Championship to spell out that a successful tournament would land him in the senior squad, Anderson had no communication with the England boss.

However, coming off the back of a successful season with Nottingham Forest and dominating countless midfields at the developmental tournament, the 23-year-old became impossible to ignore. Anderson is versatile; he can play as a six, eight or ten. By his own admission, he prefers the eight, where he can occupy more advanced areas, despite being most potent as a six.

Anderson Shines in Fifth Straight England Start

At Wembley on Thursday, Anderson started his fifth successive game for the Three Lions and has become unshakeable from the XI.

“He’s a key player for us,” Tuchel said before the clash with Serbia. “He’s one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. That’s why he’s with us and starts – he’s nothing but impressive.

“He has to keep going. He’s a complete and mobile central midfielder. He’s got a long career ahead of him. But there’s still a long way to go. There are no guarantees, especially publicly, for the World Cup. He’s an elite footballer with a lot of talent. We are very happy with him.”

Partnering with Declan Rice, he provides both stability and creativity as the deep-lying midfielder. His imposing physical presence allows him to get a foothold in the middle of the park, winning a match-high eight duels in the Serbia game. Yet his strengths extend well beyond tenacity.

Naturally, Anderson is a playmaker. His experience in more advanced positions is handy, as he possesses masterful quality in possession that translates into a deeper role. Anderson constantly looks to get on the ball and set the tempo. He controls matches, averaging 118 touches per 90 in England’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Where Rice has become more of a box-to-box midfielder, England have lacked a midfielder who can dictate games in deeper areas and launch effective transitions. Kobbie Mainoo did not allow England to extract the best from Rice at the 2024 European Championship – the midfield was one-dimensional – but Rice and Anderson complement each other well. England now savour a balanced midfield.

Anderson, who was also eligible to represent Scotland, is a progressive all-rounder. He rarely loses the ball, boasting a 92% passing accuracy from 82 passes attempted against Serbia. A clever through ball to Bukayo Saka exhibited his sharpness. Although Anderson has seemingly made the position his own ahead of the World Cup, he is not England’s only option.

“There’s so much talent across the country,” Anderson said after the win over Serbia. “Once you are in, you don’t just stay – you have to keep performing in every game to keep your position. I’m really happy with how it’s going. I’m playing well. It’s accelerated so quickly, but I need to take it in my stride and focus on the next England game.

“It [Tuchel calling him one of the best midfielders in the Premier League] is a big statement, and it shows his confidence in me. I’m happy I’m impressing him. The World Cup is a long way away. I’m just focusing on doing well every time I go out there and put the shirt on. I’d be buzzing if it happened.

England have historically faltered in developing the deep-lying playmaker type, but appear to be making headway. Anderson is no anomaly; look no further than Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, also in this month’s squad and capable of running the show from deep.

While the pair are both suited to dictating play from deep, they enjoy different strengths. Anderson is more athletic than Wharton, but what Wharton lacks in vitality, he makes up for with incredible passing range. The 21-year-old is one of the most incisive line-breaking passers in the Premier League, conducting play for Palace every week. Anderson is ahead of him in the England ranks, but they will both be useful to unlock defences at the World Cup.

Anderson has nailed down his spot, and as long as he stays fit, he will sit behind Rice at the World Cup, hoping to command midfields as England aim to end 60 years of hurt.

His senior international sample size is small, and the quality of opposition does not match those he will have to overcome if England are to win the World Cup – but he has stood out in the Premier League and Europa League, starred at the Under-21 Euros and is now settled in the senior squad.

England require someone capable of dominating games if they are to make it to New York. Anderson might just give them the edge they need.

Kevin Owen’ Emotional Message After Sami Zayn Becomes WWE World Champion

Published

The pro-wrestling industry has been very vocal in its praise following Sami Zayn‘s crowning as WWE Champion, who became the company’s 19th Grand Slam champion in the process.

On Saturday afternoon in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Zayn came up against and defeated both Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a triple threat match in the main event of the Night of Champions to secure his first world title in WWE.

Towards the end of what was a high-octane, entertaining match, it looked like Zayn was going to get dropped with a Cross Rhodes. However, the Canadian wrestler managed to counter it into a pin and get the three-count to claim the victory, sending him and the crowd into raptures.

Fellow WWE Superstars React to Sami Zayn’s Historic Win

Following his victory, stars across the wrestling world have come out to heap praise and congratulations on Zayn. Chief among those was Kevin Owens.

Owens and Zayn have a storied history together over their time in WWE, and even well before that. They established themselves in the wrestling industry at the same time and have been both rivals and partners at various stages over their years as wrestlers.

After Zayn secured the win, Owens posted a heartwarming message to congratulate his longtime friend.

Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens

“I’ve missed a lot of things I wish I hadn’t in the last 15 months because of this injury, but today is, by far, the one I wish I had been there for the most,” Owens wrote on X.

“He has brought out the best in me as both an ally and a foe. That’s because he is THE best. When you’re consistently that good for that long, you become undeniable. Sami becoming WWE Champion was inevitable. He has deserved that moment for a very long time, and I am so happy to see him finally get it.”

Owens has been out of action since April 2025 as he recovers from a neck injury and the subsequent surgery, but to see his friend win the world title has clearly given him a great deal of happiness and cause to rejoice.

Owens is not the only one who took to social media to show their support and love for Zayn. Becky Lynch wrote: “I was crying tears of joy then, and I’m crying tears of joy now! So well deserved! Congratulations Sami Zayn!”

Matthew Rehwoldt wrote: “Underdog from the underground… now on top of the world. Congrats champ. Sami Zayn Forever”

On the Night of Champions post-show, Big E, a former WWE Champion himself, weighed in on El Generico’s victory and rise to the top.

Grand Slam champions

Every Grand Slam Champion in WWE History [Ranked]

There are a strict set of rules that need to be met to be deemed a WWE Grand Slam champion.

“Sami’s overcome a lot of nevers. When I was in the locker room for the longest time, we knew who El Generico was, we knew about his work on the indies, but there was always, ‘He’s not the WWE mould. He’ll never be signed here.’

”He finally comes to WWE: ‘Okay, he’s a good hand. He can put on these great matches in the mid-card, but he’ll never be World Champion.’

”He broke through that glass ceiling that he was butting his head up against for all these years so many times to finally become WWE Champion.”

The overarching theme of Zayn’s victory and the praise he has received, is how much of an underdog story it is. He entered at the bottom where most didn’t give him a chance and came out on top. The eloquent, heartfelt messages he has received, with Kevin Owens’ standing out, highlight the indelible mark he has made on the industry and why he is a well-deserved champion.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Names ‘the Best Player in the World’ Right Now

Published

Plenty of names were thrown into the conversation about who is the best player in the world heading into the 2026 World Cup, with several of the usual stars catching the eye and forcing their way into discussions.

Performances from the usual suspects in the group stage from players like Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Vinicius Junior have the debate among pundits as alive as ever over who is truly setting the tournament apart.

One man who certainly isn’t shying away from giving his verdict is former Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and he has been left in no doubt after watching a teenager over the course of the last few years.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Believes Lamine Yamal is the Best

That player is Lamine Yamal, who wasted little time announcing himself on the biggest stage. The Barcelona winger needed just 10 minutes to open the scoring in Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, becoming the eighth-youngest player to score at a World Cup.

Having already dealt with fitness concerns heading into the tournament and only managing 19 minutes in Spain’s 0-0 draw with Cape Verde, Yamal’s 45-minute display against the Saudis was enough to convince Ibrahimovic that he’s watching the best player on the planet.

“I believe he’s the best player in the world; he’s a special player for special moments.”

Yamal has now played 100 times for Barcelona – but has he achieved more than Messi after his first century of matches?

Why Zlatan Rates Lamine Yamal So Highly

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Ibrahimovic, never shy about sharing strong opinions, be that as a player or a pundit, explained exactly what sets Yamal apart from his rivals in this conversation, right before his opener in his first World Cup start.

“If they can get him on the ball, he challenges every time he gets the ball, it doesn’t matter if he has one, two, three in front of him, he will challenge, he will create, and that is what Spain needs. That’s what they missed in the first game.”

It’s not the first time the Swede has gone out of his way to praise the teenager, either. Before the tournament, Ibrahimovic had already flagged Yamal as the player he was most desperate to watch.

Steve Clarke Ridiculed For Comment About England in Scotland Resignation Letter

Published

After successfully qualifying for two consecutive European Championships and the 2026 World Cup, Steve Clarke has called it a day at the helm of Scotland, after seven years in charge.

It’s been one of Scotland’s most successful periods. After not qualifying for a major tournament since 1998, some memorable moments have taken place during his time, none more so than the 4-2 win over Denmark, which booked their place at this year’s World Cup.

But there was another moment of apparent victory against a bitter rival that Clarke highlighted in his lengthy resignation letter, which the official X account of the Scottish national team have released, that has everyone talking, and not necessarily for positive reasons.

What Steve Clarke Said About England

Steve Clarke

It hasn’t been the first time he’s been under fire for his comments lately. In the wake of Scotland’s 3-0 defeat to Brazil, which ultimately led to their elimination from the World Cup, Clarke was accused of being “disrespectful to his players” after an interview at full time.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke’s post-match interview after losing 3-0 to Brazil has not gone down well

Among the highlights Clarke chose to reflect on from his seven years in charge was Scotland’s 0-0 draw with England at Wembley during Euro 2020, a result he referenced as one of the standout moments of his reign.

“There was an unforgettable night at Wembley when we more than matched the eventual beaten finalists England and held them to a 0-0 win!”

For many supporters, holding the Auld Enemy to a goalless draw four years ago doesn’t quite carry the same weight as some of Scotland’s other achievements, and the inclusion of that line in such an emotional farewell letter has seen Clarke come in for a large amount of criticism.

One fan wrote: “Sums it up. Celebrating a 0-0 draw against England at the euros. Embarrassing. Good riddance.”

Another added: “What an embarrassment, thank god he’s resigned.”

Scotland have produced some true icons of the game and the very best of them have been ranked.

A third questioned how the comment made it into an official statement at all, asking: “How has that gone out on official team channels.”

Others were equally scathing. One supporter posted: “Sums up why he had to go and everything that was wrong with his tenure,” while another called it a “terrible statement by the arrogant person he is.” One fan summed up the disbelief, simply admitting: “Had to check this was the official account and not a parody.”
