ADC accuses Tinubu of playing politics amid hardship

Published

on

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of being overly focused on politics while Nigerians grapple with worsening economic hardship and insecurity.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the President’s recent remarks about the opposition as “unpresidential”, arguing that they show a disconnect from the realities facing citizens.

The reaction follows comments reportedly made by the President, in which he dismissed opposition parties and mocked them for holding their convention “on the street”.

The ADC said such comments suggest misplaced priorities at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with rising living costs, food inflation, and declining purchasing power.

“At a time when families are battling a historic cost-of-living crisis, the President chose to mock the opposition instead of addressing the suffering of Nigerians,” the statement said.

The party also raised concerns about the state of insecurity, noting reports of abductions and attacks affecting everyday life, while accusing the government of failing to respond adequately.

It rejected claims that its national convention was held on the street, describing the narrative as false and possibly the result of misinformation.

The ADC further alleged that the democratic space is shrinking under the current administration, claiming opposition parties are increasingly denied access to public venues.

“No government before now had denied political parties fair access to public venues such as Eagle Square, a national civic ground that belongs to all Nigerians, not to any ruling party,” the statement said.

On governance, the party accused the administration of weakening key institutions, saying: “The president also cannot preach separation of powers while simultaneously assuming the role of interpreter of the law, political referee, and commentator on judicial matters. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot be a president and a judge at the same time.”

The statement also criticised what it described as a recent attempt by the president to align with supporters of former President Muhammadu Buhari: “After years of distancing himself from the late President and denigrating his record, blaming him for every failure of his government, it is hypocritical to suddenly make a U-turn because of the coming election. It is too late.”

The ADC maintained that Nigerians are facing mounting hardship, insecurity, and debt, adding that it remains focused on presenting a credible alternative in the next general election.

2027: I got APC ticket from God, my people, I’m unpopular with Tinubu’s govt – Senator Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has attributed his continued electoral success to the support of his constituents, God, and some political leaders, saying he is not among those favoured within the corridors of power in the current administration.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the senator said he had consistently won elections because of the confidence his constituents have in him and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Ndume noted that he was preparing for his seventh election, having previously served two terms in the House of Representatives and four terms in the Senate.

According to him, voters in his constituency are informed and educated enough to make independent decisions, adding that their support for him and the APC reflects their belief that both serve their interests.

The lawmaker also stated that he secured his party’s ticket through the support of God, his people and some political leaders, stressing that he is not among the popular figures within President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Ndume, who has at times been critical of the administration, said he believes public officials should be commended whenever they take actions that benefit the people.

Ndume said: “Well, you always ask me this question. By God’s grace, this is the seventh election I’m going into – two in the House of Representatives and four in the Senate – and I’ve always been winning.

“Our people are not fools. My people are mostly aware and educated. So, if you see them elect APC and Ndume is part of it, it is because they feel that APC is better for them and that’s why they vote for us or that Ndume is better.

“I don’t know tomorrow, but I know my people like me. I know if it is election that’s why I got the ticket.

“I got the ticket from God and my people and the support of some of our leaders. You know I’m not one of the popular guys on the corridor of power so far.

“You know that I’m one of the critical guys of this government, and when somebody does something that you expect or something good to you, you really have to commend him.”

The National Executive Committee, NEC of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, has further reached resolutions on running of the party’s activities.

In a statement signed by Osa Director, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, the NDC said that its second NEC resolutions are meant to take the party towards NDC towards institutionalization

The NDC said it is committed to building the party as a strong and enduring institution, with emphasis on party supremacy, adding that programs, policies, and appointments “(except personal staff) of all governments elected on the platform of the party must be made in consultation with the party structure.”

It maintained that the party “remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party.

“All affiliated groups and NGOs shall operate under the guidance and control of the party and must not function in parallel with, or independently of, the party structure.”

The statement added that “A comprehensive Code of Conduct shall be established for all party officials and candidates. To this end, a committee has been constituted under the leadership of the National Legal Adviser to develop the framework and guidelines.”

It said a National Reconciliation Committee has been inaugurated to reconcile all aggrieved members of the party.

It said, “The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded.

“Members are encouraged to remain committed to the party and contribute to its growth and sustainability for generations to come.

“At all times, and for all candidates and aspirants, total allegiance must be to the party and the national interest.

“On financial probity, the party will enforce strict accountability in the management of party resources by all officers, and party funds must be used strictly for party business.

“For candidates, there must also be strict accountability for all funding received. Monies sourced by candidates at all levels, and contributions made by candidates to campaign accounts, must be fully disclosed to the party at the appropriate levels (local government, state, zonal, and national). Such funds must be received through dedicated party campaign accounts, including presidential and governorship campaign accounts of the party, as applicable.”

Former Labour Party Vice-Presidential presidential candidate, Datti Baba Ahmed, says nobody will cause any problem between him and his ex-principal, Peter Obi.

Baba-Ahmed made this statement on Sunday during an interview on ‘Inside Source’ with Laolu Akande, a programme on Channels Television.

He was speaking on the speculation that he has fallen out with the former Anambra state governor.

“Let me say that nobody will cause a problem between me and my boss, Peter Obi.

“He can be in any party today. I still have respect for him as someone who governed Anambra State, as someone who doesn’t give the ‘shi-shi’, and we have mutual respect for each other, so nobody will come between us,” he said.

Recall that he was the running mate to Peter Obi, who was the presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023.

However, ahead of the 2027 general elections, the duo parted ways to different political parties.

While he left for the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Peter Obi defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, and he is the party’s presidential candidate ahead of next year’s general elections.
