The 15 Best Managers in Premier League History Based on Stats
The Premier League has been home to some incredible managers over the years, with fans lucky enough to witness the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola battling it out in the same era. But that’s not the only pairing who have been at loggerheads since the league’s inception in 1992.
Legendary Manchester United gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson was king of the castle for most of his career. However, he found himself challenged by the likes of Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho all the way until his retirement in 2013. But that didn’t stop the Arsenal and Chelsea legends from enjoying their own tense rivalry.
All the names above are undoubtedly some of the best the English top flight has ever seen over the years, with numerous league titles between them and plenty of points on the board. Here is a look at the managers who have the best statistical record in Premier League history.
Managers must have taken charge of at least 50 games since the start of the Premier League in the 1992/93 season.
1
Pep Guardiola
2.28 points-per-match
Taking top spot as statistically the greatest Premier League manager of all time is Guardiola, who took charge at the Manchester club after stints with European powerhouses Barcelona and Bayern Munich. In fine, treble-winning fashion, the enigmatic Spaniard finally broke the curse and delivered Europe’s most coveted trophy to the fans at the Etihad Stadium, and was named the best coach of 2023 at the FIFA Best Awards for doing so.
His recent dominance in the league is unrivalled too, with a points-per-game record of 2.28 secured on his way to six titles in seven years. In a division that has seen some of the greatest managers of all time feature in it, Guardiola has truly proven how special he is during his memorable stint on the blue side of Manchester.

Alex Ferguson
2.16 points-per-match
Just missing out on top spot is Ferguson, who effortlessly won a ludicrous amount of honours at Old Trafford. Recording a staggering 2.16 points per game, the manager with the most trophies in football history lifted 13 league titles during his period of dominance with Manchester United.
The age-old debate of whether he is the greatest footballing manager to stand on the other side of the white line is – to this day – almost unbearably rife, with some siding with Guardiola over the legendary Scot. But you have to commend his longevity – to accumulate 2.16 points per match across an 810-game period is no easy feat.

3
Jurgen Klopp
2.11 points-per-match
Taking the bronze medal is Klopp, who impressively transformed the state of affairs at Anfield and turned Liverpool into one of the best football teams in the world. He spearheaded the Reds to their first league title since before the top flight’s rebranding in 1992, while he also picked up another Champions League to add to their other five in the trophy cabinet. Few could transform a side like the German could, with four of his Liverpool teams recording the best points-per-game record in the club’s Premier League history.
Despite Liverpool having some inconsistent seasons, namely in the 2020/21 and 2022/23 campaigns, the German has still managed to maintain a very impressive 2.11 points per game on average. Klopp couldn’t sign off with a second Premier League title but maintained his stellar overall record in the competition throughout his final year at the club.

Roberto Mancini
2.05 points-per-match
The man responsible for the iconic ‘AGUUUEEEERRRROOOOO’ moment. Roberto Mancini guided Manchester City to that famous title in the 2011/12 season, pipping their local rivals to the crown with the last kick of the season.
Across his four-year tenure at the Etihad, the Italian was full of controversial moments both on and off the pitch, whether it be arguing with opposition managers or fighting with Mario Balotelli. Despite that, Mancini was lucky enough to manage some of the stars in the early embers of the club’s promising era, and he has them, and especially Sergio Aguero, to thank for his fourth-placed ranking here.

Antonio Conte
2.03 points-per-match
A manager with multiple reigns in the Premier League after taking charge of London-based duo Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, it was Antonio Conte’s time on the west side of the capital that was arguably more memorable due to his title glory with the Blues. In his four-season stint in England, Conte managed 132 matches and picked up 268 points along the way.
To say that things ended harmoniously in both of Conte’s Premier League spells would be a flat-out lie. His struggles at Tottenham, in particular, led to him launching into a savage rant, practically asking Daniel Levy to sack him.

Jose Mourinho
2.02 points-per-match
Ah, The Special One. Or Marmite – you either love him or hate him. But, for once, put any troubles aside and applaud the charismatic legend of the game. After four stints in the Premier League, Mourinho cements his place as an all-time great, proving he can be successful in different surroundings.
His most glorious spell came as Chelsea manager, winning an impressive three titles across two separate stints at the London outfit. However, his time at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United dampened his points-per-match ratio.

Mikel Arteta
2.00 points-per-match
In his first managerial role, Arteta was tasked with reviving a downbeat Arsenal side, and he passed the initial years of struggle with flying colours. Long gone are the days of mediocrity as the Spaniard has transformed the Gunners from top-four contenders to title challengers over the last couple of campaigns.
Eventually finishing five points off the pace after leading the pack for the majority of 2022/23, Arteta cranked up his points-per-game tally by leading Arsenal to another assault on Manchester City’s Premier League crown. The Spaniard has finally led the Gunners to the title after three years of heartbreak.

Arsene Wenger
1.96 points-per-match
The Arsenal legend was known for his ability to keep the Gunners in the Champions League in times of despair, but more famously for leading them to an unbeaten league season in 2003/04, an achievement we likely won’t see repeated for some time. His rivalries with Ferguson and Mourinho were box office too.
While Arteta has now usurped Wenger on this list, the current chief of the club still has a fair way to go to reach his levels of longevity. You can only tip your hat to the Frenchman for amassing such an impressive points-per-match tally across his 828-game stewardship in north London.

Thomas Tuchel
1.94 points-per-match
Thomas Tuchel saw his stint with Chelsea end earlier than many fans would’ve ideally liked, though he did manage to leave a legacy behind at the capital club after his unforeseen Champions League triumph. He may not have led the west Londoners to domestic glory, but his consistent performances in the league saw him secure an average of 1.94 points per match.
Despite the impressive points-to-per-game ratio, the German was ultimately the first victim in Todd Boehly’s reign of terror at Stamford Bridge. When Graham Potter followed suit months later, it emphasised just how well Tuchel had actually done in his short but sweet tenure.

Arne Slot
1.91 points-per-game
Arne Slot’s time at Liverpool has been a tale of two seasons. In his debut campaign, the Dutchman looked like a world-class operator, seamlessly turning an already incredible squad into title winners.
However, 12 Premier League defeats in his second season at Anfield have significantly impacted his points-per-game ratio. Slot would’ve been much higher in these rankings if his first-term form continued for longer.

Kai Rooney and Man Utd Fans Wowed by Shea Lacey vs Rosenborg
Kai Rooney, son of Manchester United legend Wayne, has shown support for one fellow teenage talent at Old Trafford after the club’s recent friendly against Rosenborg. Fans of the Red Devils were also excited by what they saw.
With the World Cup now over, the 2026/27 Premier League season will kick off again next month. As such, the coming weeks will be vital for all clubs as they look to get their squads in tip-top shape.
Having now been made permanent boss at Man Utd, Michael Carrick is overseeing his first pre-season and likely would have enjoyed the action, with his men winning 5-0 against Norwegian side Rosenborg at the Lerkendal Stadium.
Kai Rooney Impressed by Man Utd Talent in Pre-Season Friendly
Shea Lacey opened the scoring for the Red Devils, as the 19-year-old showed good composure to cut in on his left foot and curl a smart finish past goalkeeper Leopold Wahlstedt. Joshua Zirkzee doubled our lead on the other side of half-time with a fairly spectacular goal as he sat down two players before rolling the ball into the back of the net. After plenty of changes, a series of youngsters finished the match, but that didn’t stop Man Utd from scoring three more times, through Jacob Devaney, Harry Amass and Ethan Williams, to seal the 5-0 victory.
It was the scorer of the first goal, however, who caught the eye of many. Indeed, 16-year-old Kai Rooney – who currently plays as a forward for Manchester United’s youth academy – could not help but highlight the talent of teenager Lacey.
Taking to social media, he shared a clip of the 19-year-old winger’s goal, with the simple caption: ‘My brother!’
Adding to the hype after the game, ManchesterEveningNews went with the headline: “Manchester United’s own Phil Foden is ready for a breakout season.” In that article, journalist Steven Railston noted: “It’s understood the 19-year-old was backed by academy coaches ahead of pre-season to have a breakthrough 2026/2027, and he will vindicate that faith if he continues to perform well in friendlies over the coming weeks. “
In his player ratings, Railston also gave him an 8/10 and wrote: “Received the nod to start after coming off the bench last weekend and grabbed his chance with both hands. Pressed aggressively and sent United on their way to a comfortable win with a great opening goal.”
Man Utd Fans Want More of Shea Lacey
Add to those who liked what they saw, fans on social media were very excited by Lacey’s efforts. Some have even suggested he should get more first-team chances next season under Carrick. One wrote:
” Michael Carrick needs to start giving Shea Lacey minutes in the Prem.”
Another added: “Shea Lacey is really trying. Deserves minutes when league starts.” A third wrote: “Harry Amass & Shea Lacey are both good enough to play a squad role in the 1st team this season.”
Someone else said: “Shea Lacey breakout season off to a sensational start. Go on, lah.” A final fan insisted: “I’m sure Lacey has already earned a spot on the first team.”

Liverpool and Newcastle United Must Pay £51.9m for Oskar Pietuszewski
Liverpool are said to be showing interest in another winger as they look to continue bolstering their attacking ranks this summer. Andoni Iraola is expected to ramp up his summer business in the coming weeks, with the Spaniard looking to put his own stamp on his new squad.
The Reds had already agreed a deal for Jeremy Jacquet coming into the summer, and they followed up that deal with the signing of Victor Muñoz. The young Spain international is tipped for big things, and he may well see plenty of football this coming season, but he is unlikely to be a starter.
That role is reserved for whoever Liverpool decide is their Mohamed Salah replacement, but the attacking recruits may not end there, with another winger also being linked.
Liverpool interested in Porto talent Oskar Pietuszewski
Liverpool have been linked with a move for FC Porto winger Oskar Pietuszewski, who has been impressing in Portugal. According to Fussballdaten, the Reds are in the mix to land the winger, who is quickly becoming a priority for German giants Borussia Dortmund.
Porto signed the winger for around £6million in January, and the 18-year-old went on to score three and assist four, aiding a title win.
According to the report, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United, Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid are all said to be interested and tracking the young winger’s rapid rise. The youngster has already won four senior caps for Poland, and there is no sign of him going back to the youth age groups.
Dortmund appear to be showing the most serious interest, but Porto have no interest in selling Pietuszewski this summer. According to the report, the Portuguese giants are going to demand the full value of the winger’s €60million clause, which works out at £51.9million. Dortmund are said to be planning to bid a touch under £30million this summer, but they are likely to met with a firm ‘no’.
Dortmund have no plans to pay the full release clause, and they could wait and circle back at a future date if there is no sign of Porto dropping their price. Premier League clubs may be willing to pay, but that is big money for a player who has only impressed in a top league for a few months.
Pietuszewski is ready to make a ‘huge impact’
Speaking to TalkSport back in February, analyst Andy Brassell explained what is so special about Pietuszewski. He said: “He has been brilliant… He is something special. His balance, his ability to stretch the game, his maturity in being able to judge the pass, to let it go at the right moment, to find a teammate, the timing of his runs, the timing of his passes, you add that to his pace.
“I think his ability to know when to hold on to the ball and beat a player and when to let go of the ball is something that you would expect a player of 21, 22, 23 to still be learning. And he seems like he’s there already. He’s so, so convincing, and he’s so advanced for his age. He’s not just a promising player. He’s a player who makes a huge impact now.”

Angel Di Maria Says World Cup Was Over After Argentina Beat England
Nearly a week has passed since Argentina produced a performance that was hardly worth talking about in a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, with Lionel Messi and co. committing 26 fouls and registering zero shots on target across 90 minutes of normal time.
That disappointing display has done little to quiet the reaction surrounding the tournament, and it also hasn’t stopped Angel Di Maria from finding a way to throw shade at England. Speaking in his first interview since the ugly full-time scenes of last weekend, the former Manchester United winger was asked about the World Cup following an appearance with his new club, Rosario Central.
Indeed, Lionel Scaloni’s side booked their place in the final by defeating the Three Lions in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 semi-final victory.
And while there is still political fallout from the tournament, with those associated with the three-time world champions continuing to stake their claim over the Falkland Islands by unveiling banners and singing chants as their political leaders have their say, Di Maria has now renewed hostilities on the footballing front as well.
Speaking to Argentine newspaper tyc sports, Di Maria said he wants both coach Lionel Scaloni and Lionel Messi to carry on with the national team. And, for him, the tournament reached its peak with the 2-1 semi-final win over England. He explained:
“The win over England was a great joy for all of Argentina, and this was clear and made me very happy. I am grateful to everyone in the Tango squad forever.
“What they achieved and the win over England was the crowning of their careers. For me the World Cup ended here, for they gave the country an indescribable joy.”
It didn’t take long before critcism came his way, with one X user labelling him ‘pitiful’, as another called him a ‘loser’. Elsewhere, another user wrote: “This is so tinpot from a country who’s won as many World Cups as them,” as a fourth remarked: “These people are living in their own bubble of denial.”
“What on earth is he waffling about?” a sixth asked, as a seventh concluded: “Okay, FIFA should give Argentina the ‘Won Against England’ Cup. The final doesn’t matter, lol.”
Argentina Adopt Siege Mentality As Record-Breaking Petition Wants Them Banned
Argentina president Javier Milei has claimed the rest of the world is “jealous” of his nation after a petition calling for the team to be banned from football surpassed 23 million signatures this week. But he isn’t the first figure in the South American country to adopt a siege mentality, with plenty of players, coaches and supporters believing it is very much a case of them against the world going forward.
Of course, that mindset helped La Albiceleste reach the pinnacle of world football back in 2022, but it is also causing them to become one of the most disliked teams in the world. In the eyes of many, it has tarnished a reputation they once had as a side filled with genuinely brilliant footballers, with accusations that they now rely more on the dark arts than their star power to get the job done.
Those within the Argentine FA are attempting to punish sections of the world media that they believe have contributed to damaging the country’s image. Ultimately, however, they have been the architects of their own downfall.
The ugly scenes after the World Cup final saw Dani Olmo punched by a member of Argentina’s coaching staff, while Gavi was allegedly punched and choked to the ground by Leandro Paredes. Of course, none of that has been helped by the explosive allegations surrounding Argentina’s relationship with FIFA, which have only added further scrutiny to the controversy.
